Because it does more damage.

Starfang is effectively tier 8 in a 7 tier game, but it lacks the special bonuses like +75 stamina. Also, Chasind Great Maul is usually adding its full armor penetration to damage by the time you get it, so its stat distribution makes it more effective.
In Awakening, I am a huge fan of VIgilance because it can work for any build, thanks to the customization. I'm about to get in on my Arcane Warrior, and he often has difficulty with accuracy and mana--so I can just choose to up those aspects of the stats!

Ageless would be great, if it wasn't triple-bugged.slayingstorm wrote...
what about Ageless that is my fave two hander looks good to
2 of its properties don't work (weakens nearby darkspawn, and messy kills). And it has no rune slots when you get it.
As for Vigilence vs. Chasind Great Maul... depending on how you customize it, Vigilence can blow Chasind Great Maul out of the water. It's base damage is higher than Chasind great mauls with its + 5 bonus . And it has an additional + 5 elemental damage bonus on top of that (which essentially nullifies Chasind Great Maul's Armor penetration advantage). It's Base critical chance is more than 3 times higher (possibly 6 times higher, And again, depending on how you customize it, it can add +15% to your critical damage.

For free weapons, I pick Yusaris. Lets compare the two:Sidney wrote...
The Summer Sword is the best non-DLC 2 handed weapon, why? It is "free" so it + whatever 133 gold can buy in other things > the great maul.
Summer Sword
Silverite (tier 6)
Damage: 16.50
Critical chance: 2.25%
Properties:
+20 Physical resistance
Chance to knock target back
Yusaris
Silverite (tier 6)
Damage: 16.50
Critical chance: 2.25%
Properties:
+20% fire resistance
+10 damage vs. Dragons
^^Everything is equal until you get to the properties. Summer sword gives you +20% physical resistance. Worthless on a two-hander, since they get indomitable, which makes them flat out immune to stun, knockdown, pull.... ie. the things you need a physical resistance check for.. And its second property is not implemented. It doesn't do anything whatsoever.
On the other hand, Yusaris gives +20% fire resistance... a property that not only works, but isn't rendered redundant by any 2-h skills. Its other property is just a bonus. An extra +10 damage to dragons ( read: an extra +10 damage, to dragonlings, drakes, the High Dragon and Flemeth)
Don't get me wrong, Both weapons are relatively crappy compared to the DLC stuff and the stuff you actually have to pay for, but compared to each other, one of them is less crappy.

Though it is worth mentioning that two hand swords use 110% of your Str for added damage while Mauls use 125% of your Str. So calculate The maul always doing 15% more damage then a twohand sword because of this into the equation. Im not great with math and I would love to see actual numbers but as I see it the maul will do considerably more or equal damage(not sure) the higher Str you are particularly if your breaking 100+ Str in Awakening.
*EDIT* forgot to add the specific setup is Raw power+Sharp for Vigilence and I meant Chasind great maul as best for Origens.

Butterfly Sword just after Lothering, You can immedietly go to Orzamar(Can be difficult but not impossible) as your first destination and pick up Ageless really fast. Yusaris in the mage tower takes quite a bit of work/time compared to the others.
And of course yyou could always make a B line for Starfang or Nugcrusher.
