Okay,  on my first playthrough I found the armor, boots and gloves but no helm.  Second playthough the same thing, armor, boots, gloves.  No helm.  So my question is; where is the helm?

Ahh, okay, so did you have to trade for it? because on my current playthrough i killed him and he didn't drop the helm as loot.

yep. i only had 2 things he wants to trade for at the time. the scarf from the elven dude in the dalish camp's werewolf wife (which you are supposed to bring back to him) and a book that the dalish hunter apprentice gives you for helping him hook up with his girl. i traded the book for the helm. he also has a book he says but i didn't have anything else to trade him for it that he wanted so i told him i'd take it off his dead body but it wasn't there after i killed him. :(

here's a link to everything he will trade for: http://dragonage.wik...wiki/Mad_Hermit

but don't trade him the scarf as you need to give that back to the wife's hubby in the camp.

guess the book i was trying to take from him was a codex entry and not an actual book or item. didn't check for that so i'll hafta see if i got it after killing him to take it or not. just curiosity on my part.

You can still complete the quest for Athras even if you don't bring back the scarf.

You can keep the scarf to trade to the hermit, give Athras the scarf and trade the amulet he gives you to the hermit, OR, tell Athras his wife is dead without mentioning the scarf, and have both scarf and amulet available to trade.

Just to add: you can trade with the hermit up until you go through the forest barrier but not after, so do all the trading you want to before that.

I usually use the book from Cammen, the amulet from Athras and the book, you can get from behind Lanaya. She sulks at first, but it's ok if you sided with the elves and/or made her the new Keeper.

Trade for the items, then duck into the tree stump to get a minor (constitution?) boosting ring and fight him + the 2 rage demons. Killing stuff gives you the best rewards as always, just don't do it at the first opportunity.

The "book" you're trading for is a codex entry describing Dawn/Dusk rings. The "Silver Ring" he'd be willing to trade for is actually the Dusk Ring, if you happen to have it in your inventory.

You can also trade the Dusk Ring that you pick up in the shade campsite behind the Grand Oak.

Thanks for the responses. That tricky old hermit. So if I help the elf hook up with his girl I can trade his book for the helm? Okay cool, I actually forgot to return with the wolf pelt before I talked to the hermit last time.

My first game I was able to get the ring out of the stump without him attacking me but I don't remember how I did it.

Yup. You don't necessarily need the pelt if you have above average persuasion. Some say, you can trade the black pearl you run into during the Urn quest. I've usually used it to get the codex entry about the magic brazier albeit igniting it appeared to be optional even on PC.

Interesting. Thats something to discover, thanks. Did you use the dog, perhaps, since there's the landmark tent?
Which class did you have by the time?

I find that if you return to his spot after you finish Nature of the Beast, he won't attack you.  If you try to fish around in there beforehand, he does.

Take Zevran with you for some lolz.

"Yes. What is it with Zevran and holes?"

Do you really have to ask?

There's also a brooch you can buy from Varathorn in the Dalish camp that the hermit will trade for.  I believe I used that one time.

Oh, didn't know that. Thanks, Janni. 'ts been so embarrassing to steal the Nirvana reference book right in front of Lanaya. She doesn't care if you do that after the curse has been removed, though.

How does that work?  In my experience, you can't do any trading with the hermit after you dispel the magic barrier to get to the ruins.  So by the time the curse is removed, there is no use for the book.  And I agree - it's just too churlish to take it earlier after she says not to - unless your pc is into that sort of behaviour, of course.  Posted Image

That book too is a codex entry, In Uthenera, probably referring to Nirvana's in Utera (In the womb).

At least you'll get your curiousity satiated plus 50 or 75 XP for the codex.

That must have been it, I sided with the rhyming Oak tree, gave him his acorn back and then got the ring out of the stump.   The Oak gives a nice Mage's staff for his quest.
My next game will probably be a Mage/Arcane Warrrior/Healer so hopefully I'll be able to trade for the Ancient Elven Helm this time now that you all have given me some tips.

Has anyone been able to trade for all of the Hermit's items?  Gah, I wish i could just kill him and loot his corpse. :P

Yeah, just trade him for the items first and then duck into the caveat. He'll attack you with the rage demons.

Zathrian says he's a runaway blood mage if you ask him about the forest before getting the staff, so you can live with your conscience relatively unscathed.
