Well first off it was announced at GDC when Kasumi was officially announced that she is the first "Premium DLC" and will cost money. However, at that time the price was still unannounced and all major news outlets mentioned she would cost money so that should be no surprise.

Second off it was announced prior to the release of ME2 by the developers there would be free DLC released via Cerberus Network and Premium DLC that would cost money to EVERYBODY.

So please people stop complaining about Kasumi costing money and it should be free on Cerberus Network. Do your research as it was announced prior to the release of ME2 there would be paid DLC for everybody. It would be nice for Kasumi to have been free via Cerberus Network but I glady spent $7 to download her and I am glad I did. In my honest opinion she was worth every penny.

So because they announced it ahead, it's suddenly not a ripoff?
I fail to see your logic.

Years ago gamers got tons of maps/missions for free.
Today it's just about trying to see how much money fans are willing to pay for trivial content.
I don't mind that people enjoy to pay for this, but don't tell people who don't to stop complaining.

I was told that kasumi stays in another room of the ship, that make me think about it is not content taken away frome the main game to sell it later for more money.

People seem to take the "Oh never mind" attitude to this.... To me it's utterly, utterly imoral, and disgusting.

That's exactly how I see it. (While the pricing for itself is still another disputable matter ...:crying:)

But BioWare obviously don't care about those "morals". And as long as the majority of fans is either unreserved happy to be ripped-off like this OR they are NOT happy, but can't resist to buy nonetheless, it's simply the most profitable route to go.

Dude, pretty much *everyone* is doing paid DLC these days.  It's not like Bioware are doing something outrageous compared to the rest of the industry.  You might not like paid DLC (and I don't either tbh) but the sad fact is that its happened, its been happening for a while now and its most certainly going to continue to happen.  If anything, you can blame mass uptake of internet connectivity for the console market.  It was pretty much a forgone conclusion the moment Microsoft decided to make people pay for Xbox Live.

Bioware are owned by EA now, and you're kidding yourself if you expect EA or any of the other big name publishers to take a moral highground in the face of good profits.

Would you please point me towards these mythical tons of free stuff? Seriously, point me towards these tons of free (developer-, not fan-made) missions/maps/items - because... I don't really remember tons of free stuff for my older games - like MoO2, SimCity 2000, Civilisation II (and later), Baldur's Gate (1 & 2), Planescape: Torment, Command & Conquer 1 & 2, Age of Empires 1 & 2... please, find me free stuff.

I think the developers planned ahead. Which in my book is good developing. Trust me its easier to plan ahead and put in an empty room in the normandy, than suddenly trying to hack code and generate a room out of thin air; if a room WAS generated out of thin air the masses will complain that it suddenly breaks lore, getting a room appear out of nowhere and we get "A WIZARD DID IT" posts.

Oh please, cut your smug reaction.

First off, the Unreal games got you tons of free maps from the developers.
New maps for FarCry, Quake, Soldier of Fortune and different other FPS games would be released with the designated patches. Free, and from the developers themselves.

The RTS games you so happily mention didn't have those since most of the time a map editor was included.
RTS maps are a whole other experience than FPS maps obviously.

Since RTS maps are a whole different experience than FPS maps, you probably shouldn't mention FPS maps in comparision for ME either, since it's mainly a TPS/RPG-hybrid? :P (also: bit about perspective - for you it's a loss of free content, for me Cerberus Network - or Shale for that matter - is a huge *gain* in free content - the reality is probably somewhere between our perspectives)

And this is the crux - BioWare is a RPG company, so you should really compare the content support to other RPGs, not FPS, since ME DLC involves a lot more design than FPS map design - essentially, FPS map design is a lot simpler, RPG design involves that + writing + cinematics + voice acting. And compared to other RPGs of the past, ME has excellent content support.

Furthermore, another reason why content was often free in the past was that the production values were a lot lower in the past (of the content and the game in general). Nowadays, the level of polish is much, much higher, but so is the work invested in it. It simply is a lot more expensive to produce stuff.

Finally, you have to consider the reasons for the ongoing free stuff FPS games apparently gave: It was vital to keep the multiplayer-scene going - that was the reason. They didn't do it because they were nice and friendly people (well, perhaps that too, but not just because of that), but because it increased the shelf-life of the game and encouraged people to recommend it to their friends (due to the lively multiplayer scene). In a way, the free content still helped with the revenue and hence they could afford producing free content.

RPGs are single-player games - having free content doesn't help their bottom line a lot, since it's only aimed at people who already have it and there's no ongoing multiplayer scene to keep sales going. So, the content isn't paying itself... so somebody *has* to pay for it.

I'm sorry, I'm trying to find the correlation between a timeless classic that forewarns of a future whereby we lose all of our rights and freedoms to questioning the motives behind offering downloadable content at a price - would you care to clarify? Perhaps, after you've read 1984?

Seriously? Comparing a new squad mate who's integreted into the game to a simple Multiplayer map?

Calling someone's actions immoral. In this case, their action is going "oh, I may want that". You didn't even say it. I don't get why you're getting so upset. You obviously saw what I was replying to, so I don't get where you're coming from.

I don't mean exclusively for Cerberus Network, I understand that some Cerberus Network content can be purchased by others at cost, I just mean that something THIS important sounds like something that should be in the Cerberus Network content, that's a reason I paid for that service, so i wouldn't have to pay every time new content arrived.

And that's exactly why you have to pay for it.

Cerberus Network is just for some useless armor/weapons.
Real one hour "DLC" is charged for ludicrous prices.
Welcome to 2010.

And the best thing is that only the legitame player have to pay more to have a full game experience when the evil pirate can have all this content for free (even some content that the legitimate gamer will never have like preload stuff etc...)

Enjoy cerberus network

That's the thing actually, she's basically part of the story so it's kind of stupid to advertise the game using the "Shepard's dirty dozen" than release the twelfth member at a price, i wouldn't mind paying for armors and Firewalker missions and get the last member for free, i mean come on i can't even get access to all the rooms on my ship if i don't pay for this crap...

Dumb decision... but it ain't mine to make so i have to cope with it, i just don't get the reason Bio's heading in this direction, it used to be such a great company, i never complained before, but lately... ahh never mind...

 Take care guys!

Me and a friend were pretty active on the modding and mapping scene of Unreal Tournament 99  - 2004
Most of the maps officially released after the release of the game come from parts of the community who gave permission to include them into official map packs.

What problems? They sell you the only DLC you want for $7 but can only buy points in increments of $10. It's fantastic.

Yes, but every time a new DLC item arrives, i have to do another purchase, and the automated fraud monitoring on my card goes off with multiple transactions of that sort over a few weeks, even months (very frustrating, usually resulting in about 3-4 days without a card.) Micro transactions are the worst. which was why i hoped Cerberuss network did that, I think now that I was mistaken.

I suppose if i could 'pre order' a list of DLC that I choose, pay for the next, say, 6 months in advance, (perhaps even with a collective discount, doubt it) say, everything for characters, missions, equipment (armor too), NOT clothing (not armor, just textures). that would be good, too. no mess about points, and a definite pricetag.

Not Bioware's fault that your card doesn't let you spend money.
Seems to me that you not so much have a problem with Bioware's release system as the inability, for you as an individual, due to circumstances beyond biowares control, to buy their content with your card.
Just saying.

Y'know, we can be stubborn to a fault and say that every damn thing released as DLC should be included in Cerberus Network. But then we would be just conceited. BioWare must have a profit, and this DLC is worth every single penny, seriously.

I agree this is crap. I'm ok with some stupid appearance pack or crap armor and weapons as premium dlc; but when it comes to the point where i buy the collectors edition and still don't have access to my whole ****ing ship and all the crew members, i start to get a little pissed off. so i can't wait for when they release another planet to land on and explore or another team member or some new main quests i can play after i beat the ****ing game and everyone died because i dont know when the dam save is that carries over this game to the third one. ****
