Don't feel like paying taxes? Don't pay fine by me but you damn well better not use any taxable services or things. So no 911 or paved roads for you! Generalization? Yes, but a true one. *Wonder how many different way she'll be called evil by the crazy people.*

QFT

Too many people fail to realize how important taxs are. I almost feel bad getting my tax refund every year since I feel like Im not contributing enough.

Do you also need a military which gets 3 times the amount of Europe combined? (assuing US, if your not, my apologies, but I just think that this is extremely stupid).
Do you also want to pay the jobless, who dont actually look for a job, they just spend it on drugs?
Do you also like a good chunk of that money being wasted on things you dont need? (Ugh, to be british, 100 million spent on transport choppers that cant fly when its cloudy, the millenium dome, that bloody wobbly bridge...)
Do you also like how some of that money slips through the cracks, and into peoples pockets?

The list goes on really. Not to turn it into a political debate, I mean, theirs always going to be problems. But damn, theirs so many with each government purely because of 2 things, Greed, and world standing, you can even bounce religion in there, Religion and politics in the modern world.... Being religious shouldn't be leverage. How is the health reform "Evil, and wrong, and satanist"
But dont get me wrong, governments are essential, for schools, public transport, the police, health care (but I still have to pay a chunk to it, hell, when I finish university ill owe 30k, and thats british pounds lol) etc. Im currently getting well annoyed at my car insurance tho, im leagally required to have it in order to drive, but I still get taxed ****loads on it lol.

Talk about off topic :P

There's only a tax if the item is valued at $600 or more.

Yes, I read the entire rules page.

Oh...  wow...

Now I'm 'definitely' not gonna bother with a computer.  I'll just worry about a prize pack then.

...This definitely makes me less depressed about the whole thing. :P

It's like two prizes for one auction!  One's from bioware, the other's from the government!

I'm BROKE at the moment.

Until I get a new job, I'm SOL on anything big.  I can buy a couple things here and there but I don't have 400 bucks to blow on a computer right now, with Otakon 2010 to attend in a few months.

Lets put it this way: Even if you have to pay taxes, is paying $100 dollars for a 1000 dollar laptop or 2000 dollar computer such a bad thing?

Not quite sure, but if i had to take a guess, i'd say 10% of what it's worth.

Spoken like someone who doesn't make enough money to understand just how sh***y taxes are.

Don't worry, some day you might well understand like the rest of us.

Technically there are no taxes placed specifically on prizes in the tax code.

The market value of the prizes you won are included in gross income as miscellaneous income.

Depending upon your income level and tax bracket, you may or may not have to pay taxes on your winnings.

Man, glad I got the Bioware literature pack. Tallied it up on the prize list page, only ended up around $66. Good to know these things, I suppose.

Holy wow, I just realized I'm getting $66 worth of free swag. Awesome!

You're lucky. I've set my target for books at this point, because it's the only thing that's even entered my price range.

The best answer to any tax question is "it depends", and without knowing specifics it can't really be answered.  I'd take a guess and say the chances are pretty good with you being a dependent that you will not be paying taxes on your prize unless the amount of your prize winnings exceeds the standard deduction allowed for dependents filing a seperate tax return of $950.
