Impossible to choose a class!

I've never had this much trouble picking a class!   It's so hard to decide in ME2.  This being my first play-through of ME2 I want to pick a class I will enjoy the most the first time.  I guess only I would know what's fun for me but I have some questions.

I have narrowed it down to these 2 classes:  Soldier or Sentinel?

Which one should I pick?

I played through ME1 as an Infiltrator and enjoyed it very much.  However, I got tired of being limited to the pistol all of the time.  I loved my sniper rifle in ME1 even though the opportunities to use it were infrequent.  Since ME2 has taken out decryption skill needed to "unlock stuff" (and any class can do that now, from what I understand) I don't think I want to play as an Infiltrator, although it's my close 3rd alternative.

-Which class has the best armor?
 -Can Sentinels equip heavy armor?
-Which class has the coolest looking armor?  (Yes that's superficial..I admit)-Obviously the soldier has the largest weapon selection, but can a Sentinel equip a good weapon later in-game?
-Do Sentinels have access to the same weapon "tier" once gaining the talent or are the weapon choices still limited?
-Do Soldiers ammo types overcome the class shortcomings?

I'm leaning towards Sentinel for the tech-armor and the ability to adapt to most situations.  But, I'm wondering if it will be worth it in the end.  Is it better to go with a specialized class or the jack-of-all trades?  Does the Sentinel seem underpowered in late stages of the game?

I know each class has strengths and weaknesses, but in your opinion, which class between the above two has the bigger weakness?

Infiltrator: I like the concept but Soldier has the sniper rifle too.
Vanguard: I'm not crazy about close combat and I hear the charge ability can expose you to enemy fire
Engineer:  doesn't really appeal to me
Adept:  I don't like the light armor and I don't like the fact that biotics are mostly ineffective against enemies with extra defenses

Would love to hear some thoughts from others that have had experience playing different classes.

you have been misinformed about armor, and the4 vanguard charge is good if you know what to do look at the sticky at the top

Vanguard and Soldiers are the only ones whose powers are not replicated by squadmates and heavy weapons.

Go with Vanguard.

Armour is totally different in ME2. NPCs don't use it, and all Shepards can use what Shepards can (ok, that sounds weird).

You get additional weapon training at 1 point in the game. Instead of a new weapon, Soldier gets to choose from powerful versions of the assault rifle, sniper rifle, or shotgun.

Sentinels ... are very good. Without going into it too much, there are no gimp classes in ME2. They play somewhat differently, but have the means to win. Sentinels have extreme levels of survivability due to tech armour, though.

Personally, I have less trouble with Sentinel than Soldier, but that's a personal thing. Soldiers can just shoot everything to death ('cos there's a gun for every situation), I'm just better at throwing powers about.

My favourite is infiltrator, though. The auto time dilation on scoping is nice (soldiers can get slomo with adrenaline rush), the invisibility is neat, but it's the little bits of tech powers that has me hooked. I like my incineration blast, my 1 point in AI hacking, and I happen to think submachine guns have style (Soldiers don't get SMGs).

dont think you can only play one character. if your going to play it twice or more then just start with the vanguard and the infiltrator. your going to get a good feel for biotics with the vanguard as well as an awesomly fun ability in charge. SMG and shotty cover alot of ground weaponwise and im toying with reave right now as the bonus talent too. the infiltrator is definitely that one shot one kill class with cloak/widow. the infiltrator smashes synthetics too. youve got alot of variety between those two.

one class that im really getting interested in is the engineer. im trying to unlock dominate so i can get an engineer going but im not having any luck. but the engineer looks like its got a debuff for every level of defense as well as cryo freeze for CC(i have no idea how well cryo blast works yet tho). with dominate and AI hacking, you probably dont need cryoblast....and i havent even mentioned the combat drone yet. i think the engineer will give you alot of "hmmmm, what sweet ability should i use" moments. maybe add the sniper rifle, and what the hells the point of squadmates, or playing any other class really.

i hate you dominate.

Just thought i would clarify this for him.

At that point where you can choose a new type of weapon, if you already have a large weapon (assault rifle, shotgun or sniper rifle) you can instead choose to get a super version.

So an infiltrator can get a super sniper rifle or choose between assault rifles or shotguns.

A Vangaurd can get a super shotgun or choose between sniper rifles or assault rifles.

A soldier can get the super version of whichever he/she choose

Armor is not something you grab and equip like other RPGs. It is built into the class and can only be enhanced through upgrades. Everyone can equip any of those upgrades. This does not mean an adept can take damage like a soldier just the same basic armor and upgrades exist for them.

There is no one class that out performs all other significantly. I have completed Adept and Infiltrator games and am working on Vanguard.

Infiltrator can be a blast since, properly spec'd, it can either deal out huge damage from a distance with a sniper rifle or sneak next to an enemy and burn it down with an SMG (or pistol).

Adept does not seem like your fair. Mostly its about popping out and controlling enemies. Ordering powers and setting up enemies for the kill.

Vanguard is about getting in the middle of a fight and shotgunning things to death. Charge is just a rush. A good amount tactics plus shotgun-to-the-face play. I am really enjoying this.

YouTube has some great video on all classes. Just search and you'll see how each class plays out.

i ran through as a vanguard, adept, and now a sentinal... sentinal would be better it the tech armour ability actually gave you better protection... something I feel they lacked to fix from me1 to me2. I feel if you use the geth shield, barrier, tech armour, etc it should add an extra layer of protection if you already have full shields. Personally I like the adept singularity ability it came in handy when I faced multiple enemies...

I do not recommend videos before playing the game for the first time, though.

Watch them if you get stuck, watch them to improve skills, but first time you gotta get the full experience.

Thanks for the replies! It really is impossible to decide. I guess I won't have to worry about armor then. I guess that's a big difference from ME1 that I wasn't aware of.

Thanks for the info, I'll definitely give Vanguard another look. The information about the weapons/upgrades really helps too.

Having played as Vanguard my first and fourth runs, I strongly recommend NOT playing VG your first time. It's by far my favorite class now, but it's really hard to use Charge effectively on your first play through. You pretty much wind up only using it when there are a couple of enemies left, or lowering the difficulty. It might still be fun, but IMO if your second run is VG you'll really have a blast. :)

Infiltrator and Soldier are both great choices for a first run. I'd lean toward with Infiltrator just so you have some abilities besides bullet time to play with.

you should play Soldier so you can have a feel for all the weapons. The assault rifle is great, and you'll be happy for the shotgun and sniper too. then once you finished playing, in your second playthrough you can pick a different class with your favorite weapon

It's real easy. You click on one of the options and there you go. (youre going to play all of them eventually anyway...)

Funny you should say that, I'm using a dominate Engineer with a sniper rifle on insanity (have put her on hold though until I get Kasumi)... It's a blast. I found myself using all my powers liberally, though at first dominate really saved my skin, as the engineer starts out quite weak, and that temporary extra squadmate/meat shield is very useful indeed.

After trying out all the classes, Adept is by far my favorite. Singularity is a virtual "I Win" button for most fights. Pick up Sniper Rifle training and Armor Piercing Ammo training during the storyline and that takes care of everything Singularity doesn't.

Bah! Don't wuss out and ask others to make up your mind for you. Keep trying each class until one "fits" you. ;-)

OK here's my take on the classes (except soldier which I havent played):

-Infiltrator is great fun, you have cloaking and certain tech abilities that will help you conserve ammo... Not to mention you can get a beastly sniper rifle later on (only soldier and infiltrator can get it). In addition, you get a nice time dilation effect when using a sniper scope so your headshots are more or less guaranteed, even if you're not a crack shot.

-Engineer is awesome... You get a number of fun abilities that don't control as much as they spread chaos. It's weak in the beginning but becomes a beast at higher levels.

-Adept is good at controlling, and can do craploads of damage by combining biotics. And using biotics is hilarious in general... The problem is that your enemies will have defenses on higher difficulties, making most of your powers obsolete until you "strip" them.

-Sentinel has a nice wholesome feel about it as it has a tool for every occasion. Its tech armor is very useful. It's a great class.

-Vanguard is just pure fun... Just try it. If you like winning battles before it actually registers that you've won (or dying hilariously, albeit bravely), you've found your class. Only problem is that it feels a bit limited ability-wise... It's awesome class special power is just that good!

And I've never tried soldier... Its considered one of the most deadly classes but it feels too action-y for my tastes.

Hope I helped!

Bah, pure combat and semi-combat classes all the way. Once I'm done with my first completionist soldier playthough, I'm going Vanguard and then Infiltrator.

Tried playing ME1 with a class that only had initial pistol training and hated it. Let the crowd control spamming and overall combat ineffectiveness to squad members.

I just can't see either Shep without some sort of big gun.
