Claiming that English is your second language as an excuse for poor communication skills is trite and insulting to all the people who actually studied the language. Most people who learn a second language take great pains to do it properly, and I have never seen an ESL class where written communication was not stressed and graded appropriately. In the vernacular, that's just bull****.

As an aside, I've just found my favorite post in the forums. Thank you, OP, for at least bringing attention to the pathetic state of the written word, and a heartfelt "thank you" to all the people who quoted Latin phrases correctly and used big words without flinching.

To be frank, I am also dissapointed at people who can't read and determine what each section in this forum deals with. Doing so would allow you to determine if a thread is appropriate or not for said section.

This section of the forum deals with Origin and Awakening official campaign quests and storyline.
Does this section sound like the perfect place for you to complain about how people write?
No?
Clearly your thread would be better suited in the off-topic section.

Heh, you're such a curmudgeon. ;) Personally, I'm willing to give him a pass on that given that he was adressing the people of the forum and this is the most widely read area. I didn't even know there was an off-topic section. I suspect that posting there would have missed the target audience almost entirely.

This is why I think it was a lament, rather than a celebration.

Kinda similar to how today, it seems the focus (in the U.S. anyway) is on passing tests.  It's not for life, but for passing tests that they learn.  Non vitae, sed experirae discimus?

Again, though, say "Seneca" and I think "Weren't they one of the Iriquois nations?"  I'm very much the dumb d0rf pictured.

Seneca est exemplum philosophorum priscorum qui quidam discit, tamen historia saepe demonstrats philosophos decipere.

 langauge.

In a post condemning other forum users' command of language, one should not misspell the word.

Mayhaps taking a closer look at Elementa linguae Britannicae would do the trick, eh?

I have gone through quite a few threads in these forums and come to realize that at least a handful of you shouldn't even be playing the game.

Your command of basic written English is really bad. And I'm not just talking typing mistakes or English as second language. Those are forgiveable and can easily be recognized. With some of you, there are serious grammatical errors made repeatedly.

I would suggest to those, and you know who you are, to consider several things:

1. Do you qualify the age requirement for this game?
2. If you are spending this amount of time playing the game, you should be able to brush up your langauge.
3. "Facepalm" is not a word.

I'm not trying to insult, just voicing my disappointment at the state of some of your written English.

I'll use proper english when it is important. This is a forum for gamers, proper english is neither needed or important.

I've often found that when someone prefaces what they say with an apology for any mistakes they might make, it actually reads better than a lot of what native speakers write. I guess maybe because they have doubts about the language they put more effort into it?

It matters to them. Communication matters, not just marking the forum in the verbal equivalent of mabari dominance. ;) That makes all the difference in the world.

I can't believe I let this little tirade slip without picking these nits.

If you're going to insult deficiencies in others' written language skills, don't make any mistakes in the post in which you proceed to berate them.

Otherwise you set yourself up for some pompous arse quoting said goofs and adding emphasis.  :o

Thank you. I type fast and often have typos. But as I mention, typos happen accidentally, bad languages are not.

Anyway, I have made the appropriate correction.

Proper english should not be forced or switched on. One simply does. It should always be natural.

I agree. I don't subscribe to the theory of thought that you only have to use grammar and stuff when you're going to be judged on it.

With that said, I usually don't care about grammar and spelling unless it hinders my ability to read your post. I think that people should be able to post without having to worry about someone critcisizing them, especially on a gaming forum. But why post at all if no one can understand you? It isn't going to kill you to put in a period at the end of your sentence and attempt to spell words right. But I know I would hate for people to constantly point out that I spelled something wrong or didn't use a comma in the right place, unless it's for a fanfic or something.

I agree that some people (native english speakers included) write so poorly that it's close to impossible to discern the meaning of the post, that's when it becomes a problem.

However, some spelling errors and poor grammar here and there is no big deal to me as long as the post is easily readable (through paragraphing and somewhat proper punctuation).

If someone wants to make a linguistic trainwreck of a post thats fine, it's their prerogative after all. They have no right to complain however if people do not bother reading it.

But yea, im swedish so my english is not perfect. To reiterate, as long as a post is easy to read I really do not care if the poster is using alot of "fancy words" etc.

I find the original post very offensive. This is more or less an international board. There are many, many other languages around, and some posters have to translate from their language into English word for word. Of course they use the sentence structure they are most familiar with, so often the posts end up looking like grammar soup.

There are a limited number of forums here. We have one, the French have one, and the Polish have one. That's it. The rest has to make due with the English forum, unless they speak the other three languages.

It is supremely arrogant to assume that only proper English speakers may post here. I shall echo other posters. As long as I can understand what the poster means, I'm fine with it. The worst to me are garbled posts and those that have leet-speak, punctuation issues, and paragraphs that are non-existent.

Even with garbled posts, most of them are simply translations from on-line translators, or Native-to-English dictionaries. If I need to ask someone to clarify, I will. It's the polite and proper thing to do. It's quite easy to figure out if the posts were garbled on purpose, or if the poster tried her/his best to post in an unfamiliar language.

Strangely enough, the leet speak comes usually from the native English speakers. Most of us can't even understand what the leet speak means. Most of us non-native English speaker speak English only in English. I don't even think there is a translator out there that can translate leet into other languages.

So get off your high horse, and welcome to the World-Wide-Web.

I tend to skip posts where the author misspells nearly every word, abreviates already short words (like using "U" instead of "you", and shows a general lack of regard for the reader of the post. In effect, is being very, very lazy.

I don't mind bad grammar and spelling that much if it is clear that the author is really trying, but just sucks at language. I'd recommend to such people to do some more reading and writing, as practice makes better.

If you are a native English speaker, and a non-native like me can write with significanlty fewer errors than you, then in your shoes, I'd be at least a little embarrased. I know that if you came to be writing Finnish (my first language) better than me, I'd be off practicing in a heartbeat...

Wheras things like *facepalm*, or *hugs* or *runns of and hides*, or emoticons of various kinds go, I don't see this as a problem at all, quite the contrary - if the language used is mostly grammatically correct, fairly well spelled, and easy to follow, such internet-age addons are appropriate, I think, for use on internet forums.

I certainly care for the quality of my writing and language use, and so, if I consistently misspell a word, or consistently make a grammatical error, I don't mind being corrected. That's how we learn.

I can't tell whether or not we have read the same text. The OP essentially (as it appears to me, silly me) says:

"Your command of basic written English is really bad. And I'm not just talking typing mistakes or English as second language. Those are forgiveable and can easily be recognized. With some of you, there are serious grammatical errors made repeatedly."

Dunno, my command of my native tongue is pretty bad, too. At least I try and understand what the poster is driving at before taking a stand and beginning to type snide remarks.
