I found this remarkably similar to when Shepard (as a possible response to Saren's offer on Virmire) says he would rather die fighting than live as a slave:
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood
shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too
costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all
the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may
even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of
victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Winston
Churchill

...?
The idea that death is preferable to servitude, that freedom is better than security, that's a very common theme and there's no shortage of quotes on the subject. I think someone here even has part of the 'give me liberty or give me death' speech in their signature.

Indeed, and there are precious few that actually believe it. Most would rather live on their bellies than fight because life is so precious to them.

My favourite on the subject is John Stuart Mill's:
"The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself."
