If the Reapers miss one extinction cycle, they're cooked. They'll show up to find that their prey have moved several generations past mass effect fields, all the way to We Decided You Don't Exist, So You Don't fields.

To be honest I'm not sure they can be defeated. ME3 will be the start of the war with reapers and we may not win it.weefrasey2 wrote...

There's a kill switch to destroy (almost) all reapers implemented by the creators in case the machines went a little wacky on them. Shepard must find it. (But one survives due to a glitch in the game.) After the Reapers are finished, the races break down and start fighting each other, created the setting for a Mass Effect MMO.

Shepard finds an ancient prothean station that can create fleets and goes drunk with power. Liara leads a team of asari commados to confront him. Shepard somehow loses his memory during the fight and Liara reprograms him. Shepard finds out the truth later in the game and the main choice is based on that.
or was that done already

We won't have to, the reapers are clumsy ****ers. The only reason Sovereign was able to take out the citadel fleet was because there weren't other reapers there.

Geth/Overlord: They will likely provide network warfare functions similar to EDI in ME2. They won't just upload a single virus that will disable the Reapers' shields, but their continuous assault on Reaper networks will hinder communication and coordination between the Reaper fleet, causing them to break formation.
Quarians: They're likely to provide just pure Russian-style mass to our side of the fight. They have the largest fleet of ships of any nation, Citadel included, though many are patchwork pieces.
Rachni/Krogan: Ground troops to help protect populations from indoctrinated husk-like servants of the Reapers, along with possible reaper boardings to place sabotage explosives.
Council/Alliance: This will be the core of your fleet, determined by decisions in previous games. You're getting one or the other. If you kept the Collector base, the Alliance ships will be significantly more powerful individually.
Several other tools that have either only been alluded to or not mentioned at all yet will no doubt be missions of priority for Shepard to collect to increase the damage done to the Reaper fleet. Again, I do not think we will be able to completely wipe out the Reapers quickly, only give them a bloody enough nose that our annihilation is not assured.
