OK, let's talk about something else than what we don't like in Awakening.

There seem to be a strange shortage of character-focussed threads about the A chars, (and some might argue for good reason), but ... let's kick this off.

1) If you could have romanced someone in Awakening, who would it have been? (Feel free to argue which if any should have been bisexual. It seems many think Anders was because he has an earring and acts dandyish, but he said it one point he just likes girls.)
1a) Would you have cheated on your "SO" from Origins to do so? If your "SO" was Queen Anora (who I'm still convinced not only doesn't love you but doesn't even really like you) or Morrigan (the ditchy witchy?)
2) Of the Awakening companions, which would you like to see again most? If you could have just had a longer, deeper friendship with one of them, who would it have been?
3) Oghren's been discussed to death. Other than Oghren, who did you like the least? (Seems Velanna is high in the competition here.)

1) I don't think any of the female companions would fit for any romance, perhaps Velanna would romance another Elf but I doubt it. Of the males only Justice seems an unlikely romance candidate. But if I had to pick one it would be Velanna, based on looks only (I'm a guy.. I'm allowed to do stuff like that ;P).

1a) No.

2) I'd like to see them all again to be honest. I didn't see them as shallow of poorly written. People just have a hard time adjusting to the new dialogue system.

3) I liked all of the new companions, but Sigrun was the one I cared the least for.

1) Probably Nathaniel. He's stoic, reasonable and turns out to be a good friend even when playing a Cousland. Not to mention his voice is sexy as hell.

1a) Nope. Mild flirtation maybe, but nothing more.

2) Here I'd have to go with Sigrun, because she's simply adorable

3) Well, you've already said it: Velanna it is. Serious aggression issues and way too self-righteous. (Although, on second thought: having to cope with Anders while in possession of Sir Pounce-a-lot can also be really, really nerve-wracking...)

1) Nathaniel

1a) Probably not, although my Elf Mage who romanced Alistair and didn't make him King was sort of giving Nate the eye, since she had no idea where Ali had gone or if he was ever coming back.  :crying:

2) Nathaniel, but Anders for friendship :wizard:

3) Velanna

No

Definetly not

Nathan - but I hung him my first play since he was insisting on death. Afterwards I spared him so I could get to know him. He's the most likeable of the lot, next to Anders.

Velanna was an utter ****, and a stupid one at that. I tried to kill her, but the game bugged and I couldn't. I suppose becoming a GW makes up for her crimes.... sorta....

1 If I could have romanced any of the NPCs in Awakenings, it would have been (in order of preference) Nathaniel, Anders, Sigrun. Nate strikes me as hetero, Anders seems more to lean toward girls but I could see him being Bisexual with Sigrun also swinging both ways too. Plus Sigrun would have been a nice option for a dwarven romance, something sadly lacking in the game.

1a. Cheating on my SO from Awakenings would definitely depend on what the circumstances were. Morrigan is a non entity since she pulled a Greta Garbo at the end of Origins and Anora would just be for politics and doesn't love the PC and I doubt would care as long as he is discreet. Anything with my PC loving his/her SO wouldn't allow cheating. Its not in my nature to do so even in a game.

2. I would love to see Nate and Anders and Sigrun if possible again. I actually got to like them in the short time I could befriend them. Justice was awesome too even though I picked him up last we got to be close friends fast. However he died at the end of my playthrough (Just dropped dead in front of Aura so she could have closure with her husband's body). I didn't get to have as deep a freindship with Sigrun cause her personal quest was bugged and I couldn't get it to trigger. The others were all at 100%

3. The ones I couldn't care less if they dropped off the planet were (Oghren who I liked in DA:O and who was a freaking stupid joke in DA:A) and Velanna. I despised her attitude, her voice, everything about the PC just annoyed the crap out of me. Neither were even a part of my playthrough as I ditched them as soon as I no longer needed them plot wise.

1) I would have romanced Anders, Nate and Sigrun. I have characters who would fit nicely with all of them, but so far I have only taken through my main HNF (see 1a. for more info). I think a relationship between a HN and Nate would be intense, but I see him as being the sort who would be happier without all the baggage.

Sigrun could definitely be bi, I see potential between her and a CEF or a DCF for sure.

1a) My HNF was queen on runthrough one and mistress/chancellor on runthrough two. She really clicked with Anders, but I don't think she would cheat on Alistair (she definitely flirted). My mistress/chancellor mage would have no problems, though. She and Anders are pretty much a perfect match.

2) I really adored Anders (obviously) and Sigrun. Both of them would be fun to have around as companions and I wish there was a way to retroactively insert them into Origins. I liked Nate and Justice as well, but after their initial struggles with their sitations, they got a bit dull.

3) I didn't hate her at all, but Velanna definitely doesn't rate amongst my favorites. Because I am crazy, she actually reminded me of Shale a bit more than she reminded me of Morrigan. But, like Nate and Justice, after you get her to a certain point there's not a whole lot of there there.

1. Awakening was too short and the characters were too shallow for me to get emotionally attached to them. That, and also the fact that Velanna and Sigrun are not exactly my type.

1a. Not a chance. Not after seeing all the epilogues(this includes Morrigan).

2. Nathaniel. He had(and still has) the most potential as a character. I like the whole redemption angle in characters.

3. Justice. Don't ask why. I just don't like him. His wife(or rather Kristoff's wife) is HAWT by the way. I'll give him that.

1. nathaniel, anders (for my females) or sigrun (for my male pc) all three were fun characters with alot of potential to be even better if they turn up in future expansions

1.a not a chance alistair has been hurt enough in dao i wouldnt do anything to further hurt him but that doesnt mean i cant be friends with other men in awakening

2. nathaniel or anders both were great

3. i didnt dislike any of the companions, i just couldnt connect to them like i could with dao companions due to lack of opertunity, but all of them could be great if given a chance

My PC is a straight female Cousland, so that affects the possibilities. The one that was with Alistair, not a chance on cheating, but I have a playthrough where Alistair broke up with the PC so he could have an heir. That one could possibly have another romance, but Awakening was way too soon. Maybe down the road.

Anders was likable and funny, but disinclined toward monogamy, as well as beiing a little too ethically amorphous for my Cousland. Arguing for siding with the Baroness kind of shocked her. All in all, while he could be a good friend, that's probably about it.

Nathaniel turned out to be pretty awesome, but a lot of water would have to go under the bridge before she'd consider a relationship with a man whose father filled hers. Being a friend, liking him, even being attracted to him, sure, but to actually go there.... Well, I'd have to see how it played out in game, and over time. Way too soon to even think about it in Awakening, to close to breaking up with Alistair, to soon after her parent's deaths.

Velanna was the most unlikable, certainly. I liked all the other companions from Awakening. I'd be fine with any of the other characters reappearing, although something would have to be done about Justice's decay problem. There's a limit to what one can tolerate in a party member and rotting is way over that line. ;) I'd feel the need to keep an eye on Anders, in case his instinct for self-preservation tempted him to go down a bad path. Nathaniel would be most welcome in any party my PC was to lead in future.

I think his sole reason for wanting to side with the Baroness is because he thinks it's the best bet to get out of the Fade intact, which is pretty important. I think he's solidly on the side of good in all other cases (even arguing on behalf of saving Amaranthine while Nate encourages you to burn it to the ground).

1. My Cousland would not cheat on Anora, not necessarily out of any romantic notions but out of respect for the Crown.

2. Sigrun. Whith a character who isn't otherwise busy I would romance Sigrun in a heart beat if it was possible.

3. Justice. I like beings composed of more than one emotion at the time...

Oh, I know exactly why he did it, and the whole reason he gets the benefit of the doubt is that it was an anomoly. Still, he's arguing in favor of not only allowing a horrible situation to continue, but aiding a powerful blood mage in maintaining the status quo for personal benefit, actively working against people were sacrificed while alive, and are being tormented without end now that they're in the fade. Not so good. Making deals with things in the fade to get stuff for yourself? Bad. At least to my Cousland. And she wouldn't want to have to explain that choice to Alistair at all.

1) I wouldn't of romanced anyone since my HNF was Alistair's Queen. If I had to chose it would be between Anders and Nathaniel. I found them both to be interesting characters.

1a) Even if the option had been there to romance someone I wouldn't have. My HNF married Alistair for love not politics.

2) If DA2 is still set in this era with our Wardens. I would like to see Anders return as a companion. I also think that Nathaniel would make an excellent successor to our Wardens as Commander of the Grey.

3) Velanna probably, though I honestly never gave her a chance. I never run with more than one mage (set up as a heal/haste bot) so, it was a choice between her or Anders. I liked Anders from the start so, for me it was an easy choice to make.

In my game one of Velanna's plot item glitched and only gave her +1 approval and didn't play the cut scene. I'm not sure what insight that cut scene would of provided into her character. Over all though I found her a shallow stereotypical human hater. If I wasn't playing as "good" then I probably would of just killed her (I think that's an option, isn't it?).

1. Nathaniel for any of my non-Cousland females. Anders, less so. As a character he's great, but there really was never a spark. Sigrun, assuming she were ever interested, for my characters that are available for women. I agree with sylvanaerie about Sigrun.

2. No. My Cousland who loved the Alistair that suicided against the AD might consider it, but six months is too short a time to grieve.

3. Velanna. She has a few too many issues. Also Oghren. He's a sad case, but I play computer games to get away from reality. Oghren in Awakening is entirely too much like a past relationship. I did Alanon in real life, I have no desire to revisit it in game.

1). No one. I don't "do" romance. I've got Darkspawn to deal with, an undermanned arling to defend, and a wrecked fortess to repair. And even if I did, forming such a relationship with my subordinates (which all the companions are) is really innappropriate, and makes for poor military conduct.
2). Velanna. She's not my favorite character (but neither did I hate her), but really, she's the only one whose personal plot goes unresolved in Awakening. No matter what, her sister's still at large at the end, and she refuses to believe Seranni is a lost cause. Besides, I think Velanna is the most likely to return in the future anyway, she's never even confirmed dead if left at the Keep.
3). Justice. Look, when you get past the novelty that he's a spirit occupying a corpse, there's really not a whole lot to him. Personality-wise, he's boring, and he doesn't really have any kind of development. Yawn, next!

1) Mhairi probably if we had got to know her.

1a) Nope if it was Anora and Nope if it was Morrigan

2) Ander's i thought he was a great char and really funny.

3) Velanna she seems like she should have been a villan rather than a Warden and i think she is most likely to turn up killing people again for no good reason rather than fighting darkspawn.

1) Sigrun in that case and Nathaniel to a lesser extent.

1a) Not really, except for my DC

2) Sigrun, she is so damn happy that it makes her a Dagna light.

3) Velanna and Justice in a tie. Sure, it's kind of fun watching a spirit of justice turn into a demi-demon, but still not that interesting.

1) Nathaniel. DOES THIS PLEASE YOU? WE SHOULD NOT DALLY HERE... Oh bb I don't think so, let's go dally riggggght over there away from everyone else and we can see if it pleases me or not... And Sigrun, because LADY DWARF YAYYYY.

1a) None of em would cheat. Missa Brosca loves her Antivan, even if her libido is making her think Oghren is starting to look appealing, Sereda Aeducan would find none of them attractive and Variel Marariel HATES YOU GODSDAMN SHEMS and will just betch it out with Velanna about everyone, all the while sobbing into his bedroll at night about Morrigan. And by sobbing I mean murdering darkspawn.

2) Sigrun and Nathaniel. Anders can be kept as a NPC similar to Alistair and mocked ruthlessly; the cat/kitty/pussiecat jokes haven't been exhausted yet.

3) Velanna. Go away, Velanna.

Anders & Nathaniel seem like reasonable companions & good potential romances for female wardens. As a male warden I liked having them around in my party.

Velanna had the looks of a romanceable companion but not the personality for it. I actually disliked her more as the game went on which is saying something since meeting her for the first time is no treat either.

Sigrun just … felt off to me for some reason. I didn’t really care for her but she didn’t inspire any negative emotion either. If Oghren was the character who could have used more face time in Origins then Sigrun is the poster child for that in Awakenings as far as I’m concerned.

Oghren … well no. He has other fish to fry. I’ll never have him in my party again after playing through the game. I’ve given him multiple chances and out of game I’ve had it with him.

I liked Justice overall as a character. His banter with some of the other party members left me a bit cold & seemed poorly written (I had flashbacks to Star Trek’s Data), but his dialogues with the PC more than made up for that. Still romance is out of the question.

Banter system was OK … but it would have been nice to have a balance between the new and the old IMHO. It also bugged me that the same object would trigger conversations for multiple PCs. I got tired of talking to the statues over and over again. To me this was one area where clearly more time and budget could have produced better results.

The biggest disappointment was Mhairi. I felt like she was more interesting than half of the other NPCs.

1) I'd romance Nathaniel for sure. Anders sometimes. I thought I would like Anders most but like half way through my 1st Awakening's play, Nate was definitely faaaaar in the lead.
1a) If my PC is not King Al's wife or mistress, I'd probably cheat-and I blame this on the devs. Until the last or 2nd to last epilogue card in Awakenings, there's zero mention of your Origins LI. And even then, it still seems rather open ended as to if you two stayed together forever and ever or... what... before you disappeared. You could interpret that many ways, but for RP purposes, maybe the relationship just didn't work out or you two are taking a break while Awakenings is happening.
2) I'd definitely want to keep Nate and Sigrun around, and probably Anders too. Sigrun was just pure win as a personality.
3) Did not like Velanna. At all. I killed her the 2nd play through, no one in my group seemed to mind either.

Still (Justice) romance is out of the question.

Yah, well I imagine Ferelden society disapproves of necrophilia. Still, I wonder if it would have been different if they had said the spirit entering his corpse rejuvenated the body and made him "look" like he was still living. Would people think/act differently? The other problem is that he had a wife, Aura.

BTW, I will point out that although I think every epilogue has Justice's body (Kristoff) collapsing at Aura's feet, his return isn't ruled out as the spirit of Justice could inhabit another body. Or we could simply run into him again as a spirit, in the Fade.

I think a HNF Cousland-Nathaniel Howe romance-marriage? would be interesting plotwise, very much a Montague-Capulet type of situation. Predisposed by their families to hate, but drawn together by love.

The biggest disappointment was Mhairi. I felt like she was more interesting than half of the other NPCs.

Did you get a look at her under the helm? She was rather pretty, and the only eligible human female.

Yes, I admit it, that's one of the other reasons I'm pissed about the "redshirt" factor, too. Of the three females for my human male char., she was definitely the best choice.

Sigrun -- loved her personality, very cute under the Legion armor, but there is a certain fatalism to being in the Legion of the Dead.... however she seems to deal with it with irony and you can inspire her to at least postpone the inevitable.

I didn't think Velanna was physically ugly and would have considered her for my male elf mage, however the one thing about her appearance I found odd was the lower facial tattoo. It almost made her look like she had facial hair. And yes, even my elves thought her anti-shem attitude was excessive, however I wonder how she would have developed if there was a way to get her "soften" her worldview.

I do agree with Seranni still out there, and the ambiguity of her epilogue even if left at the Keep, she's most likely to return. But I keep wondering where along the way she lost her ability to animate trees or teleport from place to place once she joined the party.

1) No one caught my interest in that regard.

2) Getting married to Anora doesn't count as betraying Morrigan right (she said she doesn't mind). My PC's heart belongs to Morrigan only. Once he tasted perfection, mediocrity becomes painful.

3) Nathaniel Howe. Sigrun comes second.

4) I didn't dislike anyone. Even Velanna I got to appreciate a bit, as long as I don't take her seriously. Her temper is kind of cute. Oghren's been saturated.

1) None. I think they are all better friends than romances really. But then again, this is coming from someone who thinks Morrigan is the only person worth romancing in Origins.

2) Going to have to go with Sigrun. Although Anders is tied with her as my favorite of Awakening, Sigrun is more interesting character for me to want to learn more about because of her past.

3) No one really.

1.) Nobody- I really didn't mind either Sigrun or Velanna but romace-worthy? Nope.

1a) Hell no- My Cousland has got his witch to be chasing after

2.) Nathaniel seemed pretty cool as did Anders, but ultimately I couldn't really connect with them or get emotionally engaged with any of them. They all seemed interesting to some degree but ultimately  if we never saw any of them again, no big loss.

3.) I really didn't dislike any of them- if I had to pick it would be Oghren. I liked Oghren in Origins, he was the comic relief but wasn't too over the top most of the time. In Awakening, he just seemed like a stumbling drunk, fart joke. They just ditched any semblance of him being a "real" character and made him into the Jar-Jar Binks of Dragon Age. Anders was ok and I liked him well enough, but I just couldn't get over the fact that he seemed like an apostate version of Alistair.
