Since everyone is constantly yapping about their opinions on characters, and since that's precisely what this forum is for, how's about we make a list of squad members most liked to least with numbers? (1. Being your favorite character in the game)

Mass Effect 1
1.Tali-She's not overdone, she's really sweet when you talk to her, she's well mannered and very nice character design. In combat she's satisfactory.
2.Garrus-Though he isn't that talkative in ME1, he has certain morals and he sticks to them. Garrus stands up for what he believes in and is also a pretty okay fighter, my only problem was that he wouldn't duck unless I told him to, and then I had this glitch when him and Ashley would stay in place instead of follow me. Even when combat ended.
3. Liara- Liara was also a reasonable character. Nothing very special about her though. She was surprisingly good in combat, I expected her to be useless because she's a scientist. She proved me wrong.
4. Wrex- Wrex is okay, I like that he's not your stereotypical Krogan. He's intelligent and actually considers his actions. I especially liked his talks in the citadel elevator with other characters. XD
5. Kaidan- I didn't romance him because I found him completely unextraordinary, quiet, unopinioned and just plain boring. I also don't find him particularly attractive either, which is weird because I think Bioware tried to make him attractive.
6. Ashley- This, I don't even want to talk about. The only thing I liked about Ashley was her uniform.

Mass Effect 2
1. Garrus- It was really great to see Garrus again in the sequel, and have someone you knew already know in the beginning of the game. I also have a big girly crush on the guy, so yay. Let's not go into that.
2. Kasumi- I haven't even bought the DLC yet but I've watched youtube footage of her and it's enough for me to really like her. She's witty, not overly cocky but still confident. Kasumi knows she's cool but she still treats Shepard with respect and stays in-line. Which is less than I can say about Miranda.
3. Samara- I liked chatting up Samara, she has something different to say after each mission, and she's so regal and impressive. In combat she's nothing really extraordinary, but she's not awful either. I don't know about Monrith because I never recruited her.
4. Mordin- Mordin was a really funny character, I love the way he talks
frantically and his dialogues about sex ed and scale itch are just the
icing on the cake in ME2. He's also a good squad member, he's a good
shooter for a frog alien.
5. Jack- Jack, though she's kind of an **** she has a
good reason for it. She was a refreshing change from all the good guy
types on your squad in both games, and she's pretty good in combat. Her
loyalty mission is by far my favorite out of all of the loyalty
missions. It's so haunting and eerie, and when she talks about her
experiences at the facility you get a clear image of what it was like.
6. Thane- Thane, considering his whole purpose was to steal the hearts of the female audience or something like mentioned in that one article about designing him, I don't think they did such an amazing job. His eyes are a bit too huge for my taste among other things. Though I like his dark past and what not. The loyalty mission with his son was cheesy but just the right amount. Not overloaded sobbyness, but still kind of touching. And I enjoyed running around on the ceiling floor of citadel.
7.Tali- Sadly if you're female there's not really that much interesting about Tali in the new game, I love her new outfit and it was nice to have her back but she was much more interesting in ME1 when she tells Shepard about her culture etc. Her loyalty mission was kind of fun though. There is no way not to hug Tali when her dad dies. She's so horribly sweet.
8. Grunt- Grunt is really not that special either, though he has some interesting moments. I like watching him ram into other Krogans fearlessly.
9. Aah Jacob.- Jacob started out as a character I thought was going to deliver a lot more, at the beginning of the game he was actually pretty cool, but the fact that femshep can't talk to him normally really killed this character for me. There's nothing that remarkable about him, but he is one of those white knight types who think they can do everything in a Just way and that's a bit touching. His loyalty mission was interesting though I'll admit.
10. Legion- Legion is a good character, but I don't think he deserved such a small part. I wish they would have brought him in earlier in the game, given him more dialogue, more time to develop. But he ended up being that one character you have to recruit last and never having enough closure with.
11. Miranda- Miranda is cool in the way that she's a confident and powerful woman with a hot body. I don't like her face though, no offence to Yvonne Strahovski who is actually quite attractive in real life. It looks weird in-game, the way her face is overly fluffed up, and she's constantly smiling at me, even when she's telling Shepard off bothers me. It's like she's trying to mock her. What further pisses me off is that she constantly thinks she's high ranked and "second in command" aboard the Normandy. I also expected her to be a lot more mature about the fight with Jack. But because I sided with Jack Miranda lost loyalty, I couldn't win her back and she ended up dead in the end.

Well have fun. I'm expecting a lot of tl;dr's but what the hell.

Huh. I thought this was a thread to compare opinions on combat effectiveness.

Fluff is subjective, and means little to me.

it is. However, this thread suffers from a lot of misconception given its title. They shouldn't have included the 'characters' line in it. Its drawing out some of the Campaign/stories people. If you read the thread description its pretty clear this is meant to be strictly gameplay and builds

Well, if you read the OP's reasons for giving those rankings, they have very little to do with powers or weapons or somesuch.
It's all that personality stuff.

Exactly my point. The title of this forum thread is misleading so a bunch of topics are created that belong in the other forum

ME1

1.Tali'Zorah nar Rayya- Sweet, endearing, nerdy, and beautiful techspert, never left my side

2.Urdnot Wrex- Wrex was badass condensed. I never wanted him out of my party, thought he might miss out on the fun.

3.Garrus Vakarian- Garrus is the man! He's a cop gone rogue and a member of an intriguing militistic race.

4.Liara T'soni- Liara can be very annoying, but I find it all to just be her 'teenage' inexpierience.

5.Kaidan Alenko- The only thing I've ever thought of Kaidan was a "Hi there, I'm a biotic. It's pretty cool but it's made life hard. You should think about this kind of thing."

6.Ashley Williams- Blablabla "**** those ****ing aliens! My grandfather surrendered to those ****s!"

ME2

1.Tali'Zorah vas Neema/Normandy- My best friend from ME1 is back and I can romance her? Bioware... I love you.

2.Garrus Vakarian- Never would have expected Garrus to turn into space batman, and Femshep's best Romance. Good Show.

3.Mordin Solus- Mordin is funny, useful, and gives narrative insight. Good!

4.(Urdnot) Grunt- "I AM KROOOOOGAAAAAAAAN!" Grunt felt like Wrex's retarted younger brother, not that that's an issue.

5.Thane Krios- Thane is smooth, suave, and deadly. I enjoy him.

6.Legion- Legion provides insight into the geth, and makes the Geth uprising much less "Black & White" I am starting to doubt Tali. That means a lot for me.

7.Zaeed Massani- Interesting, feels tacked on though.

8.Samara/Morinth-Niether realy piqued my interest. Space Paladin versus Space Vampire. Meh.

9.Miranda Lawson- Miranda is boring. End of Story. She also doesn't look good. At all.

10.Jacob "The Priiiize" Taylor- So goddamned dull.

11. Jack "I'm a **** with Survivor's guilt"- Jack is so ****ing dull.

Hah, fair enough. Seeing as this is the builds board, though .. I'm going to post a technical analysis.
Just gonna do ME1 for now.

6: Ashley
Sure, she's a tank (if you can find decent armour, which can be a plus or minus due to potential overlap with Shepard), but her DPS is entirely based on weapon & weapon talent.
Would be a great deal better if the AI is smart enough to switch to sniper rifle just for assassinate then switch back to assault rifle, for instance. Oh, for a tactics screen.

5: Garrus
Yes, yes, he has an AR, he has tech powers, he can snipe ... but requiring 7 points in first aid to unlock electronics makes him a poor choice early game.
At high levels, he can be great with overload + assassinate + adrenaline rush + assassinate. Late game though.
And frankly, finding a good suit of armour for him is more important than any talent combo.

4: Kaidan
He has lift. That in itself is a win .. and if you're after silly amounts of biotics .. and still need someone to open locks for you, he fits the bill. Actual DPS is low (no marksmanship, and only overload to boost damage), but with throw, lift, sabotage, and perhaps neural shock if you can afford it, he's very good for single target lockdown.

3: Liara
Throw, singularity, and lift will keep your foes disabled. Warp and overload will boost damage. With a significant recharge time reduction, she can control the battlefield.
Stasis is also nice (to divide and conquer), but the Barrier 5 requirement is irritating. Nothing wrong with barrier, mind you .. it's just that she doesn't also have shield boost, so simply being better at preventing your opponents from shooting does more for survivability than barrier.
Also, since she isn't actually any good with a pistol, give her a weapon with more damage. I prefer assault rifle 'cos with shotgun or sniper the weapon force has a tendency to make ragdolled foes fly off into the distance. Nice on some stages, annoying on others where you have to chase 'em down.

2: Tali
Duration boost in ME1 is awesome ... due to tech lockdown. Overload and sabotage spam, with increased radius, that lasts longer than they take to recharge, coupled with weapon and armour skills, a ridiculous amount of shields, and ... you fight a lot of geth. She can hack 'em.
Damping is also awesome .. yes, Garrus has it too .. but frankly with her extreme amount of shields she's tougher than Garrus. Well, until you kit Garrus out in colossus medium and energized plating, anyway.
And unlike biotic lockdown, tech lockdown also deals damage. Not much, admittedly, compared to weapon fire, but some ...
Finally, foes on the ground are susceptible to melee knockdown. It's very useful.

1: Wrex
Best armours in the game (well, if you can find rage armour or equivalent), immunity, barrier, shield boost, regeneration ... he's tankier than Ashley.
Add warp for DPS boosting, throw and stasis for CC, and he's just a little ridiculous.
So good, in fact .. if he had returned in ME2 as a squadmate, disappointment would have almost been guaranteed.

 Mass Effect 1:
1. Wrex. He had some great stories. And he was beast in-game. I remember he also had some funny one-liners. It still hurts that I had him killed in 3 of 4 playthroughs. I need to go back and do ME1 again.
2. Garrus. He wasn't nearly as bad ass as Wrex, but I felt he had some good overall progression as a character in the first game. A disappointment relative to ME2 for sure though.
2. Ashley. She has, I feel, been overzealously hated for her percieved xenophobia. If anything, I thought she was one of the more natural characters, and is in many ways a paradigm of how a human today would react to aliens. I admit that I did say  "You ****!" when she met Shepard on Horizon though.
4. Liara. She was fine, but the romance seemed so sudden. It was like "oh hai! lemme get in your pants Shepard!" At least that's what I felt. She was still pretty nice though. But like Ashley, her role in ME2 sucked. Innocent (and "loose") was significantly better than jaded and raspy-voiced.
5. Tali. Boring. And talked forever about stuff that nobody cared about (the same might be able to be said about this post...). She got slightly better in ME2, but... her voice has gotten hard to listen to.
6. Kaidan. Wow, this was easy. He was a boring sissy. ZOMG! I killed is Turian douche, I need to cry and mope about it. It was satisfying giving a bunch of renegade resposes to him as femshep.

Mass Effect 2
1. Miranda. Smart, sexy, and probably the most useful squadmate in ME2. It was great melting the ice queen in her romance.
2. Mordin. Very funny, but was also a character with a lot of depth. He just made me laugh so much.
3. Garrus. Shepard's bro. Seriously bad ass. He was actually somewhat funny in this game. The romance with femshep was especially hilarious.
4. Grunt. Wrex left me with a pretty good impression of Krogan. Grunt is a tank in the battlefield, not to mention battling the Thresher Maw was fun. I loved it when he radioed while holding the line: "It's glorious, Shepard! I could climb on their bodies!" (Or something to that effect)
5. Zaeed. Really like the loyalty power. His war stories are fairly good, even if you can't talk to him directly. It also probably helps it took me more than a month to download him, so he's still got that new character sheen.
6. Samara. Kinda just... meh. She's pretty good, Reave is great, but she's just kind of average.
6. Legion. Made me seriously re-evaluate the Geth, and has begun to persuade me that Tali and Ashley have a lot more in common than Talimancers would like to admit.
8. Thane. Same deal with Samara, just average. Except his loyalty power is useless and the whole eidetic memory thing got old really fast.
9. Tali. Her voice is still annoying. And she still talks a lot. And she is a wasted party member until her loyalty mission. She is also beginning to seem bigoted (understandable so). The trial in her loyalty mission was kick ass though.
10. Jacob. Sneaking into tenth place is Ka-, I mean new boring guy, Jacob. Terribly boring. Then when I tried to get to know him as a Manshep, he was just like, "That's too personal, you gotta earn trust to ask those questions." or some such nonsense. After that, I never talked to him again. Sooo boring. Lucky he doesn't get in the vents every time.
11. Jack. She was such a ****! I did not have time for her psychological issues and complete lack of respect for authority. Plus her Biotic powers were completely blown out of proportion and then she was useless in combat! Quite frankly, her past was too depressing for me to want to deal with, and I dreaded talking to her because she was so angry and unbalanced. I guess it is a testament to Bioware's writers that I dislike her so much.
12. Morinth. Never saw much point to her. Just an evil murderer. She has yet to survive in one of my profiles.
I haven't got Kasumi (I'm not sure I will), but until I do so I will reserve judgement. She'd likely fit somewhere between 4 and 9 though.

Mass Effect

1. Wrex - Best personality, best stories, & best class.

2. Ashley - Liked her back story & a good tank.

3. Garrus - Likable, not quite as good as Wrex though. Useful because of Tech
/Combat mix.

4. Tali - Likable, not too interesting but she is sweet. Very useful against
Geth.

5. Liara - Dreadfully boring and not very strong in combat.

6. Kaiden - Awful reincarnation of Carth. He's both whinny & annoying. Useful
due to Biotic/Tech mix.

Mass Effect 2

1. Miranda - Most useful character in the game. Miranda was the first
character that I felt was somewhat on par with Sheppard other than Wrex.

2. Samara - Interesting back story. Ruthless yet honorable and very stylish.
Very useful against Collectors. Best Introduction.

3. Thane -  Good back story, great introduction, & interesting
profession/class.

4. Legion - Probably the coolest looking new character. A beast with a sniper
rifle.

5. Garrus - Other than Miranda the most useful character in the game. Didn't
talk as much in ME2 as compared to the first game.

6. Mordin - Some of the best conversations in the game were the ones involving
Mordin. Pretty weak in combat, but had strong powers.

7. Kasumi - Really liked her character. Seems pretty useful in combat. It's too
bad you can't have a conversation with her.

8. Tali - Likable and sweet. Tali was pretty useless in combat due to the lack of Geth.

9. Jack - Really hated Jack at first, but I liked her loyalty mission. It
changed my opinion on her somewhat. She's absolutely terrible in combat though.

10. Grunt - No personality whatsoever. He's pretty much has the same personality
as the Incredible Hulk. Is a good tank however. Wrex was so much better.

11. Jacob - Boring and terrible in combat. At least he was a decent guy and
didn't whine incessantly like Kaiden.

12. Zaeed - Complete A-hole with no conversation options. Was good in combat
however.

6. Tali - another dependable friend

7. Samara - neutral about her

9. Jacob - boring

10. Zaeed - interesting, but not endearing

Mass effect:

1. This place is shared by liara and tali.Number ones in both, personality and combat.
The best combo to fight all the geth armatures and colossi on foot on virmire

2. Wrex- A tough krogan with biotics.Warp was a great helper on insanity.

3. Kaidan.

The rest dont care for.

Mass Effect 2:

1.Samara-biotics and vindicator.
Pure win and interesting background
2. Mordin and Legion
3.Zaeed-like him a lot more then expexted and he is very usefull in combat

Tali adores shepardt too much, which is annoying. It doesnt matter what path you choose with garrus,he still went to dumb selfjustice in too.Grunt is a korgan kid.Morinth is wasted potentential, because bioware dont give her any dialog.

The rest i dont care for.
