So... my first DA:O char (and only one I actually merged with) was mage and I specced him AW, not because it was op spec (which I didnt know back there), but its most badass class in DA:O (imagining mage in armor and weapons) and Im not regretting it, esp because when I see mage robe models, I wanna /facepalm. Well im out, so, basicly, AW was OP in matter of survivability and damage dealing possibilities were high aswell, if build was right.
So, it was clear which character im taking with me to DA:A. After maybe half of game, I decided to try Archiver, since Anders was healing and my Spirithealer second spec was not needed. Then I got stonned. I mean, I used DW all the way throught first game and first half and now I took staff and just shooted things. Archiver with all 4 points is so freaking powerful it makes my head hurt. With mana pool gained by new items (15 willpower ring ftw), new skills and new professions (not good name, the "K" screen) I was easyli over 700 points of mana near the end of game. The aoe attack almost instantly wiped screen, the tree-on-head thing finished all yellow-name guys in area and red-named just stopped on mage shield and suffered from staff/burst attack.
...What the hell?
I am not surprised people are so aftraid of Dalish elfs...
Keeper > AW?

Best is, imo, to have your mage as AW, bloodmahe, keeper.

My favorite build is Blood Mage, Battlemage, Keeper.
Keeper is absolutely phenomenal, in that it does great damage, and heals you. One of my favorite tactics in my solo nightmare run through Awakening, with this build, was to activate Keeper powers, activate one or both of the damage abilities, throw in a Hand of Winter, and then Virulent Walking Bomb someone who was low on health. Force field myself, and while the Keeper power kept on damaging them (the only thing that stays up despite a self-directed force field, afaik), BOOM. Very few things survived this (admittedly cheesy) tactic, and even if they did, all my other abilities had cooled for further use.

Lore keeper robe looks cool, though, IMO

I run with Arcane Warrior/Blood Mage/Battle Mage. Hand of Winter adds good variety to my AW, plus no worrying about friendly fire.

Blood Mage / Keeper / Battlemage. Everything is CC'd 100% of the time, and Blood Wound kills everything in 3-4 ticks. Keeper and Battlemage spells takes care of the bosses. AW is great and all, but I never get hit so there was no point.
