Rasism is so huge in Ferelden towards elfs.

Yet, it seems there is not a single racial attack towards a dwarf in any form in DA:O (except some "shorty"-like nicknames)

Its interesting when you think about it :P

we're too awesome, that's why. And possibly keep ourselves to ourselves. The only ones you'll see are merchants, really.

(Oh god, I said "we." Note to self, you maybe only 5'3", but you're not a dwarf IN REAL LIFE. Goddammit.)

It's because they have longer arms than legs.

Because dwarves were too awesome to fight poorly and then be enslaved.

There aren't that many on the surface, in case you've noticed. Generally when a dwarf is on the surface, it's a casteless, or somebody forced out for another reason (like you, with a dwarf origin, or Oghren, or Gorim).

I get the impression that human-on-dwarf racism is less because whereas the elves have land the humans want to take from them, the dwarves, living below the surface, are rarely interacted with, and are not in the way of human ambitions.

Ergo, no reason to stoke hatred against them, or enslave them.

dwarves for some reason I don't think they'd take to kindly to be forced into an alienage or something....

they're proud people, like the dalish... no humans can mess with em

There's also the fact that the elves live among the humans; the dwarves don't. The humans subjugated the elves and view them as inferior; the dwarves stand alone and take care of their own business.

When I went into Orzammar, I had the distinct impression I was the first non-dwarf some of them had ever met (nothing that was said, just basing this off of the amount that had never been outside).

Racism develops when there's an imbalance of power in merging cultures; the dwarves merge with nobody, therefore there is no racism

The elves and humans fought a war that must have been pretty ugly. That may have been where the original prejudice began. Wars can do that.

There was a little bit of racism, though nothing compared to the elves. It sounded like Jory was being racist when he said that he knew the dwarven smiths but he explained his dad was smith so he hung aroundwith them. Lloyd had never considered you might not be a smith even though everyone knows Dwyn and Shianni of all people tells you to go back to the Marketplacw becaues you must be a merchant. And almost everyone in your party is racist about dwarves when it comes to Oghren (some of their oh-so-witty party banter really pissed my dwarves off such as 'Oh, Oghren's a dwarf so he doesn't count' ) and Leliana lost leavin camp priveleges when she said something stupid about getting a job in Orzammar reaching things off the top shelves for those poor, short, ladder-deficient dwarves. Come to think of it, maybe that's why she's the one LI my characters can't bring themselves to romance. Not to mention what she says about elves...and she doesn't even realize how offensive she's being!

Plus the cutest NPC in the game is a dwarf. Dagna is more cute than a box o' puppies. How can anyone be mean to her?

A- the Dwarves are pretty much isolated.
B- the Dwarves are needed for Lyrium trade, so no interest (to the Chantry at least) to preach hatred.
C- The Dwarves have no mages, so no fear of heretical magic.
D- the Dwarves are not weaklings and useless.
E- the Dwarves are not annoying.
F- the Dwarves did not give birth to Cammen.

As far as I'm concerned the dwarves invented the murder-knife and so hating on them is hazardous to your health.

I think you should use predjudice rather than racism in this sentence.  Where there is no "racial" differentiation, the balance of power differnetial can still create predjudical social interactions with relatively dissimilar peoples.  An example is the social treatment of blue collar versus white collar individuals in a non-racially diverse setting.  Blue collar individuals, by virtue of their economic station, familial affiliation, or even type of employment can often be socially stigmatized.  Race is the first and regrettable the most obvious excuse, but it is not the only excuse.

There aren't many of them in places humans want to live. Underground holes now mostly full of darkspawn. And- correct me if I'm wrong- they haven't made war on humans.

Elves are hated by humans and for a bloody good reason. During the second Blight the elves did squat to help Orlais ( the country which was formed by one of Andraste's sons ), an elven army stood by and just let Montsimmard get sacked while they watched.

As for the exalted March against the elves, it was the elves who attacked Orlais first at Red Crossing. That prompted the war, not the Orlesians attacking the elves or something else.

The elves deserve what they got in my eyes ( and yes before anyone asks me, I do have an elf playthrough, a Dalish Elf to be more exact )

The dwarves have always minded their own stuff. Hell they don't even go to the surface unless it is to fight on the order of a king, are exiled, merchants or Grey Wardens, and they have held the darkspawn for centuries contained.

You are a giant compared to my mere 5'1". Everyone and their mother is taller than me, including some children still only in middle school. [smilie]../../../images/forum/emoticons/lol.png[/smilie]

On topic, I think it has to do with the fact that humans are used to seeing elves as either subjugated, lower castes of society (alienage), or as dangerous/foreign/mysterious nomads (Dalish).

Dwarves are more isolated and seem to mostly make contact with humans for mercantile transactions, and are well known for their good craftsmenship. I'm sure there are biases and stereotypes against dwarves, but it would be of a different variety.

The dwarfs would be the pinnacle of civilization if were not for the damn Blight. Can you imagine the technological wonders they would have access to? The Deep Roads are beyond imagining, that is some amazing engineering. I haven't seen Tevinter yet, but when I look at what the dwarfs had they put other races to shame.

How can you hate the best craftsmen in the world?
