I can sympathize with the angry people(especially the ones that didn't find out about the Bazaar until multiple days after the token gathering started), but I, for one, greatly appreciate the opportunity I was given to win games from this company. Sure I may be a little biased because I did get something, but I personally don't have the available cashflow to afford every big game that comes out so something like this was a great opportunity for me.
I can understand how the loads of spam flooding basically every thread was more than a little annoying, especially for those not able to participate for the reasons of either too little points or being in an area where winning was not allowed, but hopefully the forum will calm down and some actually decent new members will come from this.

Do you know how many people weren't even given the opportunity to participate?  I am not appreciative of the fact I wasn't given a chance.  Not just me though, many other people are unhappy (and rightfully so) too.

A little basic psychology: this event was emotional, not logical or behavioral.  Therefore, the feelings and attitudes that people now hold are going to be much more difficult to change.  Why?  Because they are based on feelings and not cognition.  This event has caused a rift in the community.  Maybe not large, but enough that dissent has been sown.

Sure, the winners are happy.  But what are they doing to recognize their fellow gamers and fans who got shafted?  It's great you won something.  But we're both loyal fans.  Why shouldn't I have been given the opportunity as well?  If you truly want to sympathize, help voice our conerns and come up with a solution.  It may not do anything.  Then again, perhaps Bioware will listen.

So to get tokens, fans are:

- Signing up to a social site that is basically a forum with some frilly integration so that allows Bioware to datamine playing habits.

- Spamming this forum and others with a promo link (which is almost more exploitative, annoying and ethically barren than all those mafia wars status updates on facebook).

- Spam twitter with hashtags promoting the brand.

And they don't even get concrete rewards for their efforts, they get to bid on a pool of prizes.

I can understand that you're out to make money just like everyone else. But this stunt is just disgusting.

+15 renegade.

2. Reference linking in the first place created a disparity between who could legitimately participate and who could not. I am an introvert (please note, this does NOT mean I am anti-social - it simply means I prefer having a smaller circle of friends which a large amount of people do as well) and so I don't have huge numbers in terms of "digital friends". Why does this matter? Because it automatically singles me out as someone who won't be able to participate. THE ONLY WAY TO HAVE MADE ENOUGH POINTS TO PARTICIPATE IS GETTING A HUGE NUMBER OF CLICKS ON REFERRAL LINKS (capitalized for stress). Why should I not have an equal chance at participating in a FAN LOYALTY event just because I don't have the "golden" personality or "digital friends" to make me viable?

I would just like to take a moment to provide a rebuttal to this point.  Generally speaking I'd say Im pretty much as dropdown360 describes themself.  That is not anti-social but preferring to stick to a smaller circle of friends and I generally refuse to add people as friends just for the hell of it.   I certainly wouldn't say I have a golden personality though I do have my moments.  At the start of this auction I had I believe 10 people on my friends list, including two devs and a few people I don't think I've communicated with since adding them.  Not even enough people to play a virtual game of halfcourt 3 on 3,  Right now my friend list sits at 20 peoples, 10 that I have come into contact or greater contact with because of this contest.  Even so I'm hardly a digital social butterfly and I rather scoff at the notion that only such a person could win.

Yes lets just get the argument out of the way that I indeed started what ended up being the largest URL Click Refferal Thread.  But it had nothing to do with my popularity and everthing to do with being able to act quickly and realize an oppurtunity.    As we can see by the spamming of the off topic thread a lot of other people had very similar ideas, very quickly.  I was just lucky enough to get in first in addition to providing, initially at least, the best realization of the idea.  It succeded because I put effort into it, a lot more than I initially realized I would have to.

And when I up and disappeared for days?  We'll other people picked up the banner.  When I came back and explained that my aunt had gotten sick and was diagnosed with terminal cancer?  Complete understanding all around, lots of well wishes and prayers and a few new friends. What happened when I won one of the PC's that everybody in the auction was hoping to get there grubby little mitts on?  I got congratulations from dozens of people, including someone I had outbid for the computer.  IMO this auction only served to mirror and focus the intensity of each individual community member, bringing out whatever qualities they already possesed and magnifiying the results.  I mean I am quick and I usually have some pretty brilliant ideas but follow through is sometimes lacking.  Which is exactly what freaking happened with me and the URL click thread.  The annoying people became spammers, the whiners whined louder, the social butterflies started there own chat rooms watching the auctions....basically people remained themselves, we've just been viewing them through this Bazaar lens *ba-dum tish!*  My larger point is that whether one could participate in the auction or not the event pulled the community toghther for the most part, even if it was just to grumble!

Bioware isn't perfect, the auction wasn't an unqualified success.  I wish things could and would've been done differently.  But a failure and/or deliberate insult to the community that has ruined this FOREVA!!!!?#@!@#!?  No I utterly refute that notion.

In fact, let me take this one step further. Anyone who won something - especially a BIG prize like Makenzie - who argues against us, this is the way we see it: a fat man telling an underweight person they are eating too much with a half-full plate.

I'm a community member. I'm a loyal Bioware supporter. I started with Baldur's Gate. I have purchased many of their games. I was not able to take part in an event meant for people like me. I have others who have won telling me I shouldn't be upset because they got to take part.

Edit:
Oh yeah, I should mention I saw a "Neener-neener" thread started by people who won auctions.  Is that the community love you were talking about?

I still don't agree with the contest and the manner by which we were supposed to win. Creating threads to get links clicked everyday. Link clicking = disappointment.

So your not here to call me out despite 1.) Calling me a ****,(linkwise anyways I) 2.) Implying I'm not listening. 3.) Implying I'm an idiot.

All when I explicitly mention that I was refuting the one part of your argument and agreed that the Bazaar could've been implemented better. Like I said, just magnified certain parts of people's real personality. (That would be my inherent sarcastic side coming out)

No, I did not call you a link-****, you took it that way because you participated in that act.  I'm not implying your not listening either, many of the winners aren't "seeing" what we see because they don't think there was a disparity.  You have said otherwise which makes that null and void towards you.  In no way shape or form am I implying anyone is an idiot.  As anonymous forum posters, I do not assume anything about people's personalities in this setting.  What I can assume, or rather know, is the psychological responses that people have in regards to this situation.

It's great you won.  But I feel like Bioware implied that I wasn't a loyal supporter of their products.  That's the simplest explanation I can give for my reasoning.

THe simple fact that they have some bull about no third party support in the rules, like they are really gonna catch people doing it. I know many of those with over 10,000 tokens used some form of spam software to put that link everywhere. Its ridiculous, no one under 9,500 tokens stands a chance not even for a crappy picture.

That's fine and dandy.  But don't sh!t into a bowl and tell us it's chocolate ice cream.  If this for cheap advertising, just say it.  Don't lie to us and tell us that this is for the fans.  People still would have done the link referrals in that instance.  More people would have chosen not to take part for that simple reason and not feel jipped.

An error on my part, I apologize.  I should've clarified by fusing my 2nd and 3rd points together as a summation.  I suppose I thought my point was quite clear when I addressed my argument that not only were the links unfair, but there were not a useful tool for allowing fans to participate.

This is basically what we are trying to get across here, that first off it shouldn't have had a count-down for 6 days..proclaiming it an EPIC COMMUNITY EVENT.

As it turned out...it became an EPIC COMMUNITY EVENT FOR THE 48 States only.

Then the spammage began, and I'm not even referring to the original couple or three "official click threads here".   Far as I am concerned..thats fine.  No problem with that...long as it is all contained and doesn't spam fest the rest of Off-topic.   Which in the end..thats all we see, people desperately attempting to up their token counts..etc.

Fyi,  I am not able to participate like you.   I'm Canadian.   I am an outsider in this whole event due to where I live.

I am a loyal Bioware fan.

I've sat here and watched the events here, and other sites, where people were getting banned for spamming their referral links.    Some of which will probably never be able to go back to those sites, and participate there again..due to this overarching need to spam this damned number whenever and where ever.

I have also done my part ..for the community and for those that are eligible ..by clicking on their referral links in the LEGITIMATE referral link threads that were allowed by the moderators.

I have community spirit too...I don't begrudge winners...but at the same time I am not going to hang out in the auction thread...because I have absolutely NO reason to do so.

Congrats on your prize...........now please allow those of us who were pushed aside..and forgotten,  some room to speak.

I, for one, assisted people as best as I could.  I know many didn't, but for a week and a half I clicked through numerous lists on multiple forums in hopes that people would be able to take part in a generous giveaway.  I am one of the lucky ones.  I heard about the bazaar soon enough that I had a chance to put together enough tokens that I could participate.  I won't appologize for the hours I spent clicking links and posting on forums that had my url attatched to my sig.   I was opposed of the spam.  As amusing as it may have occasionally been it didn't bring any substance or real sense of community to the forum beyond you click me I'll click you.
All I can do at this point is hope that I will be accepted here should I choose to continue to be active and hope that Bioware learned something from this little experiment.

Fair enough man,  everyone knows how things can come across unintentionally on the intertubes.  I still maintain my point about the Bazaar just  bringing out the best/worst of people and that on the whole it has brought the community toghther.   Just look at the excluded people and some of the brilliant sigs they came up with!

Just saying you might want to not jump on someone who, for the most part, agrees with you. I mean the evil, practical side of me went "Mwahahaha less competition
for the good prizes" and twirled an imaginary mustache, while the other good, charitble side wishes some of
my great internet friends had a chance at winning. I agree things could've been implemented much better, but deny that it was a complete failure.  And as I said earlier I was merely refuting the point that it took a social butterfly to win.   Just that specific point

Anyways hope whatever is next is better implemented and that all can participate.

EDIT: Just have to say that the way the annoucement was handled was the greatest frellup of them all. I think all that anticipation that was built up and then popped is probably the greatest source of ongoing anger, if that had been handled better before an apology post after the fact we might not even have this topic methinks.

Hi everyone -

The BioWare Bazaar was launched this week as the start of a year-long celebration around BioWare’s 15th anniversary.

We recognize that BioWare has a global community, and the Bazaar this week was originally intended to be an international event to reflect our truly global fanbase. Unfortunately, we encountered some last-minute legal complications around how contests can be structured in different parts of the world that prevented us from including all territories in this first event, even though that was our original goal. And for that, we sincerely apologize – our goal with this sort of celebration is to show all our fans worldwide how much we appreciate your support!

BioWare definitely really values all members of our world-wide Community, no matter where you live. Accordingly, in the coming weeks, we will be announcing details about future events specifically for fans living in those territories which were excluded from participating in the first BioWare Bazaar. The future events will be a bit different from the first Bazaar in how they’re set up and structured, but our goal is to feature the same caliber of awesome prizes and great BioWare collectibles. We’ll announce more details in the coming weeks :)

The reception from those fans who have been able to take part in this first event has been incredible – thank you for participating! - and we’re looking forward to future events where we can enable fans from additional territories to also join in the fun.

Thank you all for your continued and ongoing support and participation in the BioWare Community – we really appreciate all your support over the past 15 years, and the future will be even brighter!

Sincerely,

Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk

Co-founders, BioWare

All when I explicitly mention that I was refuting the one part of your argument and agreed that the Bazaar could've been implemented better. Like I said, just magnified certain parts of people's real personality. (That would be my inherent sarcastic side coming out)

There was a post by the heads of Bioware that stated that this was the first of a year long community event.

Yeah I know all about that.....I've been here since before all that started.     It just means that those that were in the 48 states, will again be able to participate til the end of the year's celebrations.    It means the same people who employed "sketchy" tactics to gain large amounts of tokens..(if tokens are the main theme again..next time) will do so again.    Which means that the ordinary person, who doesn't have a large following, a popular blog,  or a website they own....will never ever be able to keep up with the top dogs..who know all the "tricks".

That is STILL disincluding loyal fans, because they don't know how to compete with that sort of thing.   It still benefits Bioware greatly..(which I don't care about ..just pointing it out)  and only a very very few LOYAL fans will ever see the benefits of it themselves.

So it comes down to a popularity contest..plain and simple    I have 20 digital friends, I don't tend to make alot of friends..because I don't tend to "collect" them..just because.   Its usually people I see eye to eye with.

What happened when I won one of the PC's that everybody in the auction was hoping to get there grubby little mitts on?

Why are people not understanding this?  You won so you have a marginally better view of this event than those who did not.  This is more basic psychology.

The referral links are the reason this event was a failure.  The whole point of the links were so that Bioware could get free advertising.  So what did people do?  They posted to other people who already own Bioware products.

Not to mention I saw you bidding the first day.  You had accumulated quite a pool of tokens before the event even started.  I digress, I'm not here to call you out.  If you care about the other fans, then truly listen to what we are saying.  If you don't want to help get our voice heard, then why post at all?

I don't care about effort or threads or any of that other bull****.  Why should I have to **** myself out with referral links to take part in an auction meant for loyal supporters of Bioware products?  Are you not listening?  Is this a hard concept to understand?  I'm not arguing the fact that some people "worked harder".  I'm arguing that this was for fans and supporters but not all fans and supporters got to participate.

Did you think you would get something for nothing? Come on.  This is an adult version of a school fundraiser, only we are selling a bioware link and not chocolate.

I don't think it needs saying.  It's obvious.  I have NEVER seen a giveaway that wasn't about cheap advertising.

Not arguing against you, just wanted to say I have been in a lot of giveaways where I never had to promote anything. ;)

I didn't use "sketchy" tactics, I dont' have a popular blog, or a website.  I certainly didn't have a large following...though the point could be argued now.

I have 20 friends on the Bioware site, all my myspace/facebook friends are actually family....  Like I said I am just refuting this one point.  It's just wrong.
