Hello all, I’ve been through several threads and potential solutions, but I have had no joy as to stopping these 10 minutes – 1 hour random crashes to a black screen on my PC.I run about 5 – 6 other graphically intensive games regularly, and none give me these predictable symptoms, so I doubt it’s as simple as faulty ram, and the video card is new as well.

I am using the gamersgate (downloaded version) of the game, but I think this is more related to processors, or possibly the game settings, see below.

10% of the time I get a crash to the desktop, and very rarely an error message. 90% of the time the crash is to a black screen, where the computer restarts, only it can’t restart without me pressing the power button on and off, as it gets stuck at the initial motherboard splash screen when it tries to restart automatically. The fact it doesn’t restart automatically, makes me think this is the AMD dual core causing the problem, as many people have suffered with.

I’ll post what I have tried to stop the problem, then my specs.

What I have tried:

1, Downloading the latest ME Patch.
2, Running CCleaner to clean out any driver remains.
3, Downloading the latest video card drivers (March)
4, Downloading and installing the EA advised, AMD Processor Driver from AMD 1.3.2.0053 (September 2007)
5, Running the latest AMD Dual-Core Optimizer, as advised by EA.
6, Reinstalled the game.
7, Running a memory check.
8, Tried Windowed mode
9, Tried turning on and off different graphics settings.
10, Tried turning the sound off.

Any more idea’s?

This forum is also buggy when it comes to slashes, it tends to increase their number exponentially when editing...

Quick update as to what else I have tried, I will keep this thread updated with anything I do try, until a solution is found.

1, Setting the ingame graphical option for the monitors refresh rate on and off.
2, Moving my sound hardware acceleration up and down, I'm going to try video now.
3, Using the /3gb switch to allow for more memory to be accessed.

To further update, the crashes are truly random with no set pattern, I even had one blackscreen happen when I ran the launcher (after a previous crash), which is a first, but demonstrates the point. I did have a couple of hours with no crashes earlier on, but now they are back in force.

Frankly I am becoming worried about the potential damage to my hard drive with the frequency of the blackscreen crashes. I have submitted tickets to EA and gamersgate for my ME2 installation problems, after they are dealt with, I will submit tickets for ME1.

Further investigations, the most telling part of this bug so far imho:

If I set the process to use just one processor through processor affinity in windows xp, the game will freeze up when trying to load anything, a zone or a save game etc. It will stutter a bit, unfreeze, and continue past the loading screen if I hold down a key or two; this lock up happens in windowed mode, it also happens in full screen, but I need to hit control alt delete or taskswap to unlock it there. Using just one processor (doesn't matter which 0 or 1), the game will crash on the first or second load, but work fine inbetween.

This further reinforces my view that this is a bug with the AMD X2 processors, Win XP and Mass effect, and not a faulty processor on my end, as it would be unlikely for both processors to be showing the same characteristics. I have never seen a game lock, then only unlock when you hit a specific key, hopefully that will be helpful info.

More later :), this is all going to tech support at the end of my bug hunt, they are going to get a couple of pages of text :D.

I've not got a solution, just posting to say I'm also having the exact same problem. One thing I've noticed is that ME runs perfectly fine if its one of the first things I run after starting up my pc. If I play some other game first, then this crash is highly guaranteed to happen. Not sure if its a question of making sure any unnecessary processes are shutdown or something.

Not sure if this will help. Try installing the amd radeon driver hot fix for me2. Then re-scan your system with the me config utility. I had my game (store bought) crashing at the press any key screen, after updating the drivers with the hot fix it still crashed until I re-scanned my system. The hot fix is for all 4000, 5000 and other radeon cards.

I think that Hotfix is only for Vista and 7. Not sure if it'll work for our XP versions.

Thank you for the input and help both of you :), after turning down the detail to medium I had about 15 hours more playthrough, with no crashes. I had tried this before, but not in conjunction with the AMD processor fixes.

I have downloaded the hotfix too, and now i've moved through to ME2 my system seems stable. I'll go back to test ME1 a bit more, and if I find any more errors i'll post them.

Thanks again.

I had the exact same problem until i installed ME2, then for some reason ME1 stopped crashing.I think this is a directX issue, try updating or repairing directX

I tried that thing with the Hot Fix but it didnt solve my problem and I have the same issue. ME 2 runs perfect while ME 1 keeps giving me random black screens.

hello guys, I'm trying that hotfix solution just now still n' waiting for the outcome. I didn't have any of the above problem, all features of the ME 1 runs well. Up until I had the control of the Normandy. Then I had this blackout problem when trying to view the interstellar map (to select mission, where you have to choose the destination of the Normandy), it just doesn't load at all... but when I tried to zoom out by right clicking it cicked me out of the map. Does any of you ever had this kind of situation?
