*SPOILERS*

Hey everyone, I'm kinda new to the forums, but came across something that I thought was interesting in Garrus's "merc team" storyline.

Part of Christianity focuses on the belief that Jesus had 12 disciples, and, nearing the time of Jesus's crucifixion (?), one of those disciples, named Judas, betrayed Jesus and led to the break up of the group. I dunno if I'm the first person to post about this, but doesn't Sidonis sound really similar to Judas? And doesn't the 12 disciples sound like a parallel to Garrus's 12-man "merc" team?

Just thought I'd point out my thoughts, if no one else has yet. And now I wonder what other kind of parallels are in ME2...

Yeah, and Jesus was all about revenge.

And there's also the Mad Prophet. "Repent! The end is nigh!"

And Legion.

Just imagine the media campaign...

'You thought the New Testament was all about peace and love and treating everyone as your equal? Boy, were you wrong. In the sequel to the best-selling Old Testament, Jesus has a Barrett M82 that he just can't put down. Revenge is his game, heretics, so run while you still can!'

And I hadn't noticed the possible biblical connotations of  the twelve-man team before. T'is an interesting point, so thanks for raising it Theron. Garrus - semi-divine?

I feel like it's quite likely that 12-man teams were betrayed by one of their own many times throughout history, before and after Jesus (and that's assuming the Bible's account isn't apocryphal).

Kinda similar but only if you look at it from a general point of view, I mean... Judas betrayed cause of greed and Sidonis out of fear, Garrus's team ended up dead while Garrus stayed alive and in Jesus's case it was the other way around (with the exception of Judas who eventually killed himself... Couldn't say the same bout' Sidonis...).

When Judas betrayed Jesus it did not lead to the break up of the disciples.  In fact, if you read the bible, they stayed together the entire time after he was crucified.

You know what? I prefer the Final Fantasy Tactics version.
If only because it's Jesus-figure ends up being a female angel of death. How's that for blasphemy!

i think the writers sometimes use other sotries to influence parts of the ME universe. take the quarians for example: a fleet of ships with a species who lost their homeworld- battlestar galatica much?

You know... I have to say that whenever a Japanese game company tries to write something that has to do with Religion from any other place than Japan... they get it wrong on so many levels.

Garrus only had 11 though, he was one of the 12 on his team.

'Cos Garrus is like mirror-Shep!

(although, I've often wondered if Shepard's name had slightly biblical undertones. Leading the galaxy to salvation, and whatnot. lol)

Not really. It's just inspired allegory.
Japanese developers don't just rip out bits of the Bible and shoe-horn it into their setting (well, aside from Xenosaga).
In FFT there's no Jesus, there's Saint Ajora, who spread his religion, had disciples, was betrayed and executed by the ruling empire. You know, similar but different. He was also a terrorist who caused an apocalypse by fusing with the aforementioned angel of death or some such. But things like that escape the attention fo the media because hey, it's a different setting. But they're not getting things *wrong* by any means.

Well, looking at some animals and their behaviour I say that God, if he exists, definetly has outrageous sense of humor. So I'm not too worried. ^_^

But I wouldnt be so sure if Stanley (borderline demigod) approves. What do the rules say about discussions like this?

Well, did you see the episode of family guy about the "National Gun Association"? Jesus and Moses used guns to defeat the Romans.

A Shepherd  goes around gathering together all the sheep and protecting them from all kinds of threats. The meaning behind Shepard's name is obvious.

Although the analogy that a Shepherd represents a guardian or caretaker was used frequently in the New Testament of the Christian Bible, it probably did not originate there.

Yeah. I get that. But I think that certain names/signs etc can become attached to certain mythologies/historical and cultural experiences/theologies. I just thought it was funny that people picked up on the Garrus/Jesus thing, when you could easily make the same argument for Shepard. But then, you can make arguments against as well. And I'll brt there are numerous threads here somewhere that do...

Isn't critical interpratation fun?  (ah... the interent. Where we can all let out inner enlish-lit student run free! :wizard:).

I think there will be a betrayal at some pint during ME3. Not because of any religious allegory, but because Garrus just point-blank asked...

"What would YOU do if someone betrayed you?"

And the game just kinda let it hang there.

If someone betrays Shepard, we have a hint. If not, then that's criminal waste of potential foreshadowing.
