I've seen this kinda thread in other forums before, & figured a thread like this would be cool here too! Image IPB

What kinds of things do you see in games that either acts unfun, interferes with game-playing, or just plain drives you up the wall?

I'll start this off partly to speak my mind, & partly as examples of what i'm talking about.

1: It drives me crazy when you get a dialogue choice, yet one of the dialogue choices (often the 'no' response) doesn't actually do anything, & you find yourself unable to proceed with the game until you choose the option the game makers force you to supposedly 'choose' , no matter how much you might hate that choice & want to avoid it. Image IPB

classic example: You are a hero & spend a couple chapters hunting down an evil villain murdering & destroying at will, then you finally get to fight the villain, go through all the trouble to defeat the villain, then the villain gets disarmed & at your mercy, then the loser pile of snot begs for his disgusting life, while not giving a rat's bum about all of his/her victims, then the game gives you the supposed 'choice' of whether to spare him/her or not. Yes or No. Yet no amount of clicking 'No' allows you to give the snotrag what they deserve & it's impossible to proceed with the game until you click the stupid choice, in this case, 'yes'. If you are not gonna get to choose which path you go through, then what the freaking buggers is the point of that so called 'choice' even being there at all? Image IPB

I gotta better idea for how that should go: How about bein unarmed for 2 seconds does NOT make that villains wrong-doing go away, how about bein unarmed for 2 seconds does NOT make the innocent victim's suffering go away, how about bein unarmed for 2 seconds does not make the villain's execution unjust, how about how the bloody buggers is sparing the villains life ever supposed to be 'honorable' or 'heroic' when the villain has a 99.99999999% chance of scuttling off & getting another weapon & RESUMING their evil activities 2 seconds after your gone, likely worse then before? Especially if the villain was in a leadership, political, or other seat of power abusing that power? I say that villain is responsible for the consequences of their actions, & let justice be done! Image IPB

2: Getting into a duel situation that is blatantly obviously not to the death, yet if you lose, your character dies & game overs. Lazy, sloppy programming ftl. A good example of this is a duel between your party vs Norn + some Puni type monsters in Atelier Iris 1. (lol, believe it or not, the monsters in that battle are really, honestly, word of honor as a warrior, seriously called Puni, literally, as their name. lol! I think it's pronounced the same as puny. They were funny little buggers, like parodies of the Dragon Warrior/Quest blue slimes.)

3: Minigames that bore you to tears instead of bein fun. Good example, Star Ocean: Till the End of Time's Bunny Races.

Let's hear all the stuff ya all hate! Vent your frustration here! Image IPB

One thing that bugs me is in the PS2/Xbox video game DarkWatch. During a cutscene called "Prom Night" where the hero/villan has "fun" with a female agent the hero is entirely clothed while the woman is in the buff.

That's probably the thing I absolutely hate the most when it's implied in games that gives you "choices". A prime example is in Fable when you fight your best friend for the title of "Arena Champion" and she says "Let's put on a good show. I won't kill you." :innocent: You can guess what happened I thought I threw the match:crying:. Now whenever I fight her I just keep a shield up and using pots while dancing and flippin' her the birdie

I can't exactly find a game which I hate, since I try to only obtain games fitting my taste after some scouting beforehand. There are some moments which make me dislike those games a bit though!

SPOILERS

1. Vampire Masquerade: Bloodline:

Towards the end of the game in the Sabbat compound, just as you enter a new area you will get a 5 seconds cutscene of your ghoul Heather getting killed off. The cutscene was so brief and unfinished it made me going "wtf" until the final Sabbat boss.

2. Fallout 3 original ending before Broken Steel's release:

You die, your ghoul/super mutant companions who are resistant/immune to radiation refuse to go instead of you and save your life, calling your sacrifice "destiny". Thank god Broken Steel released.

3. WoW

There are countless stuffs from a game like WoW which make you want to keyboard-bash. I'm not really talking about the design of the game, but rather the general MMO interaction mishaps ranging from DCing in Arena matchs to rolling 3-7 for weeks on loot. Ah well, it was fun at some points at least.

What I hate most is bugs. Since Tyrax used Atelier Iris in an example I'll use two other games by the same company. In Ar Tonelico 2 you have to defeat one of the last few bosses in three turns or else the game freezes. My second example needs a little set-up so bear with me. Mana Khemia 2 has two main characters (Ulrika and Raze). To play the epilogue you have to play through one and then the other's story. Now for the bugs. Whichever character you play second will have a optional boss that has to be defeated in one turn or else it will freeze the game. Worse is the bug in the epilogue. If you played Ulrika's path first checking the job board or the job part of the menu during the epilogue freezes the game.

Oh yeah and puni is pronounced poony like in raccoon.

Releasing stuff on consoles. Like FPS games, or strategy games, or MMOs, or RPGs, or anything really... except Fighting games consoles are good for those.

I hate the following mistakes:

  • Inconsistent dialogue and lore (plot holes, etc.)
  • Poor, uninspired characterisation
  • Useless or underpowered spells and abilities
  • Lack of variety in customization

As you can see from my list, the creation of a believable world that allows the creation of unique characters with a variety of abilities is important to me. I do not like weak stories, lacklustre writing, stereotypes, and being limited ot a handful of optimal builds.

I actually thought it made some sense and fit the character of Fawkes quite well.

Remember, Fawkes took the name as he admired the historical Guy Fawkes, a rebel willing to die for what he believed in. Therefore, it seems logical that he would expect you to make a decision and take up your father's mantle rather than pawn it off on someone else.

Besides, he already saved your butt in Vault 87 once! You have to man up!

Overall, however, I do agree it was a bit of a weak ending, but not because of that part. On the bright side, the game as a whole was as close to flawless as a first-person RPG gets.

@ the OP: That first scenario sounds like a few R. A. Salvatore novels I could mention. Ahh, Drizz't, and your misguided morals.

Cutscenes I can't skip are annoying. The way stealth worked in NWN 1& especialy 2 ticked me off--automatically getting thrown out of stealth, successfully sneaking around areas and getting the same result as if I had gone through guns blazing...

Being forced to do something in the most inefficient way possible, as well. For example, some of the jobs in Assassin's Creed--in one, I worked out a great approach, having killed all the archers guarding the roofs, and just needed to jump down, kill the bugger, and leave. Buuut I had to drop down, go through the crowd, and get stuck behind them while he gave a speech. And then, the game had me automatically identified so I had to fight through guards to get to him... sigh.

@Stagmar: Doh! didn't know that. I just dabbled on a friend's copy of the game. With that said, I like my pronounciation better, it makes the name (& monster) a funny pun.

@Sornin: I agree with all four of those, especially #3! One of the most ridiculous instances of #3 is Dragon Warrior 7, that had a LOT of abilities in it, but often were skills of different names & graphics, but the exact same effect! (For example, multiple skills that had the same effect, group targetted sleep status inducer. Ridiculous.)

Not to any game specific. What annoys me the most is when a game can not distinguish between "Hard and Challenging":O versus "Hard and Frustrating".

I hate enemies which are immortal by plot design and you are supposed to do some stupid thing like loosing a fight to continue. I especially hate it when 1) its not obvious and you spend some time reloading a fight just to find out that loosing it is the actual goal 2) its balanced so badly that you can stay alive indefinitely easely beating the poor immortal boss to 1 hp 3) when you can actually kill all the enemies thus breaking the plot progression and stalling the game.

*ALSO SPOILERY*
Annoying, agreed - but it could be avoided. After finishing the quest of finding the archeologist, you must go straight to Heather BEFORE you talk to LeCroix. You'd have to tell her to leave, and be firm about it. It made her sad, but she lived too.

Besides, if you talk to Heather a few times before the quest, she hints at danger, mentioning she's being followed a lot recently. I'm pretty sure there's a mod where you can let her go more gently, and there might even be one where you can save her, but don't quote me on that.

On topic, aside for game-stopping bugs, the things that annoy me most in games are when you can't skip a cutscene that comes before a boss fight/etc that you keep dying at. Yes, the scene was awesome the first three times. Now it's old and wasting my time as I go off to die yet AGAIN.

Similarly, in games that use save points/check points, it's annoying when a save/check is too far back from a big fight or scene and if you die, you have to redo parts of the level AND rewatch the cutscene before the fight AND the boss fight. Sigh.

I hate typos in games. Except some famous ones like in Starcraft.

Starcraft first made use of the word "pwned", which is popular with Internet users. It came about when a map designer misspelled the word. Then the game was published with the error. When a player had been beaten, the message "______ has been pwned" appeared. This was corrected using patches but remained in the vocabulary of '1337' or 'leet' speakers.

But esp. in RPGs they're awful.

Edit: Ah, and what i hate is stuff like in FFXII, where your group *should* run away from a group of foes (The Lhusu Mines). I don't run away from anything, so i decided to kill them, which was really difficult. I won after a long struggle with multiple tries, but there was no reward, no xp, no items, no nothing.
After i left the area there where still the "run-for-your-life" cutscenes - thats ugly.

Earlier this year I had attempted to play through Metroid Prime. I had playing for over two hours, and had not encountered a single save station. I died. I haven't touched it since, and I doubt I'll ever finish the game.

Fully agree with this! My most hated episode of this is a tie between Dragon Warrior 7, & Final Fantasy 9.

This game design made me hate FF9's Beatrix's guts! If you get the boss's HPs to 0, I Win buttoning the player party into oblivion is NOT the appropriate response from the boss! Image IPB

The sheer raw number of unwinnable boss fights in DW7 dragged down the fun factor of the game seriously hard, especially when some of those unwinnable battles are caused by game character mistakes the game FORCES you to make against your will with no choice in the matter. Image IPB Then the game punishes your character for the UNAVOIDABLE mistakes on purpose, making you wanna go WTB!!? (WTB = What The Buggers, for those who wanna choose not to swear. Image IPB)

@MightySword: Agree with this as well. I hate it when the game has dumber than rocks AS (Artificial Stupidity) & compensates for it by cheating, &/or cheapness. Especially if it does it so bad, that it forces you to be cheap to win as well. Image IPB Bad design.

@seb__: Your sig rocks! Image IPB (Don't worry, I asked the topic creator, me, for permission to go off topic for a sec, & me gave the go ahead. Image IPB)

1.Not being able to jump over fences in the Witcher.

2.Poor/Overuse of quick time events. For example the god awefull combat in the latest Prince of Persia that basically devolved into one big QTE.

3.Invisible walls.

They're sharp, splintery twigs. You wouldn't want to walk on them either!

Maybe if your barefoot, but most often, an adventurer is wearing outdoor footwear or armored footwear. Twigs should not be a deterrent.

My question is the following statement; The things I hate finding in video games:

- save points/checkpoints instead of save anywhere; there really is no excuse
- insurmountable chest high walls; Gordon Freeman has a Ph.D from M.I.T. , personally defeated THOUSANDS of hostile baddies that wanted to eat his face, is proficient with modern, futuristic and alien weapons, and has saved the world twice, but cannot figure out how to climb over a four foot wall
- as previously mentioned, when a game is frustrating hard, not challenging hard
- time-trial anything
- escort missions
- sequels that are exactly the same as the first game, but with a new setting (the Dynasty Warriors franchise, as far as I can tell, are all the exact same except for the number in their titles)
- No z-axis *gives Bioware the stinkeye*
- broken bridges; the pokemon games are the worst offenders; not letting me proceed because a "skinny tree" is in my way; if it's so monkey-fighting skinny, why can't I just push it aside? I can't cross the pond because my 21 foot, 520 pound chinese dragon lookalike needs to know a move to be able to schlep me to the other side? and I need  to beat up some guy/gal's, (who prolly has no brillant insights or special traing with regards to trainer-schlepping), 'mons and get a meaningless badge before my gigantic leviathan can puzzle out how to manage my pc's burdensome 98 pound body ?
.... uhhhhmmm what was i talking about ?
oh yeah! In conclusion, dwarves can't be mages because they're too awesome for magic

Personally, what I hate the most in game is:

1. An open-world game where you run from A to B to get to quest. Half of the game is pointless random encounter. Storyline is usually really dull too because they can't funnel you into epic stuff. So you just ends up taking a quest, do half of the game and come back do it later. Then you turn in and the guy is all impressed and say "You are fast!". (See Fallout 3 or Oblivion)

2. Long cutscenes that you can't pause in.

3. Long cutscene that you can't skip right before a boss that you'll have to reload 30 times.

4. Game with half-baked tutorials/help. You know, when you end up having to pause and go on the web because you have actually no clue of what's happening.

5. Unclear invisible wall. You know, a game where you jump around everything and then, you see a fence just like any you've jumped before and well.. its blocked.

6. Racing games where crashing into wall is better than playing well.

7. Rythm game song where you fail a song in the first minute. Then you redo and redo the same 1 minute until you ragequit. I'm happy to see that in DJ Hero, you'll only have a bad score. There's no song failing.

That's about it. I guess I could name tons more..
