@Feraele: No, i'm not a dwarf irl, but i'm a fan of the kind of dwarves that are in this game, or in LOTR, or the like. Image IPB No Snow White type dwarves or such need bother me though, they're disgraces for the purpose of bein baby friendly, & need not enter my attention.

They're also one of my favorite races to both represent myself as, & play in this kinda game, because I love bein strong & durable. Image IPB & wielding double bladed 2H axes with! Image IPB

Edit: Almost forgot, bein able to passably sound like a dwarf only makes me that much fonder of representing myself as one. Image IPB You better believe I would never be able to manage a good (old type) Elf impression, i'm not arrogant, snobbish, or haughty enough. Image IPB

I fully agree with ya about annoying pathfinding. Npc allies getting stuck & losing their ability to back you up ftl.

@imported_beer: A good one!

In your example's case, the traps mighta been setup by bandits or such long ago, then abandoned when the bandits no longer needed to hide there. Then the wolves mighta moved in & had good enough vision to see & avoid the traps. The cave would shelter the traps from the elements, thus making it plausible for the traps to stay in decent shape for a long period of time without upkeep or maintenance. Image IPB

With that said, it's still a good point & there's plenty of times when there is NOT a logical explanation & sense is lost in the scenario.

@gethsemani87: I too really hate it when you're in a game that is SUPPOSED to be a team effort, yet you get a dynamic that makes you have to do everything yourself for no reason at all. It's especially bad when you got npc allies that act like they forgot to bother TRAINING in combat proficiency before they came to help ya with the battle & ya feel like ya gotta babysit your entire allied side yourself! (Dynasty Warriors & Samurai Warriors, i'm especially looking at you! Image IPB) Sometimes, one can feel like ya might as well have been better off deployed vs the enemy army/force alone.

I'll add that it's also ridiculous when you're goin through all the trouble of saving the world, & the npcs act like they couldn't care less about appreciating it. Some act like they hate you for saving the world, but not doin their laundry at the same time! Image IPB (WTB!!? I'm goin through all this trouble to save the world, & you can't even appreciate it enough to quit callin my main character a 'kid' in a derogatory manner? What are you doin that's useful work, Mr. Big Man NPC!!? Image IPB)

Edit: @BluesMan1956: More excellence for my thread! Image IPB I agree! Sometimes you can see the most ridiculous behavior, like mages that run straight into the enemy tank formation & try to nuke them at point-blank range with LONG RANGE spells & bathrobes for defense, & promptly die. Image IPB How the buggers did they ever graduate from their school? (Is this a plausible example of what happens when exam cheaters fail to get caught? Image IPB)

Hehehe..I save every few minutes, plus I do a quicksave just in case. I always save AFTER the cutscene is over and battle starts, that way I don't have to be annoyed by the repeating cutscene should I not survive the fight.

While I am not aware she has taken another route, I hear her voice in combat. I then quickly turn around trying to find where she has gone and, before you know it...

"Clover has died."

I hear you on the AI thing, reminds me of escort quests..I abhor them.  Think it was Guild Wars..oh yes it was,  the danged Prince, King whatever he was..I was supposed to escort him safely somewhere..and every time mobs would show up he would wade into the middle of them.

Can you say GRRRRRRRRR hehehe   dang he was dumb.

You also had henchmen in Guild Wars if you wanted, the monk in the group was supposed to be the healer, but 9 times out of 10 she's up front beating the bejesus out of the most dangerous enemies instead of rezzing and or healing the group.   Many times I wanted to take a round out of her myself.  lol

Games that judge your decisions as good or evil (Mass Effect or Fallout 3). Such as Bring Down the Sky, the Batarian terrorist who kills all the people on the asteroid, and if you kill him, you get Renegade points. That made me mad.

Case in point - Mass Effect - Liara's dig site on Therum.  Cutscene: Ruins collapsing.  Get on elevator - dialog dialog - dialog ... Elevator slowly rises.... and rises... and rises and finally at the top.  Then the Krogan battlemaster saunters up.  More dialog - then combat ensues where you cannot save .   Kill all the geth and try to keep your companions alive (You better have UNITY and at least one medpack) You are close to victory when the Krogan Battlemaster charges you and kills you with a single shoulder blow.

*sigh* reload checkpoint.   Get on elevator.  dialog - dialog -dialog .....

Oh, tell me about it!  Especially when they are essential to the main quest.   This is the reason I gave up on Far Cry.  When I rescued that prisoner and how I have to escape and protect his sorry a**....  Come on!  I thought I was supposed to be rescuing the girl!

In Oblivion, starting with the first Fighter's Guild quest in Chedynhal.  You have zero control over you compatriots who charge headlong into the goblin caves while you have your hands full fighting goblins.  Invariably at least one of them dies, and if you don't manage to get through the quest with the entire party intact, for the rest of the game, you never hear the end of that "incident  at desolate mine" and how the fighters giuld really blew the contract.  Oh yeah?  Well, blow THIS!

Why do you want to punish those of us who own consoles?

It is not that I want punish players who use consoles. I have a problem with how game developers handle multiplatform games. Take my FIFA 10 example. The PS3 and 360 have more options, better graphics (WTF!?), and a more amazing game mode. The more powerful platform (the computer) receives a game of poorer quality than their console counterparts. This is poor design and I feel that it detracts from the trust of consumers.

I was under the impression that Kilsot was aiming the issues at the game makers, not the game players. Did I interpret this correctly? I won't pretend to have wizard level reading comprehension.

Yes, that is what I was trying to point out.

What annoys me is when a game forces me to play through a prologue/tutorial without letting me play the game proper. What killed Kingdom Hearts 2 for me was the fact I was forced to play some guy called Roxas and trapped inside a place I couldn't care less about for 4 freaking hours and had to deal with hints of "plot" that never manifested themselves when all I wanted was to play as Sora and go to all the different worlds with Donald and Goofy.

As much as I loved the plot and characterization of Persona 4, I hated how the game spent hours setting it all up before it let me get to the meat of the game.

That said, I'm actually looking forward to the origin stories because 1.) The decisions I make during them will effect the rest of the game and 2.) I'll be able to get to the meat of the game during them.

Umm. The fact that Roxas was Sora's Nobody that you find out about at the end kinda made sense, but I was kinda WTF why do I have to play this guy when I first started.

Also save points more like what's the point.  It really puts me off some games cos you only have time to play for an hour or somthing and the bloody things are so far in the dugeons that you don't get to it before you stop playing. Then have to start the dugeon again next time you play. Even more annoying when it involes cut scenes.

Excellent points!

It's maddening when ya gotta escort Mr. Guy from point A to point B, then the scenario keeps non-stop numbers of enemies right on top of ya from a side area or 2, & the retarded npc goes bloodthirsty berserker & completely refuses to GET OFF the enemies, tries to destroy the entire enemy force alone, ignores his freaking job, & even lets himself get lured off the escort path & refuses to stop until he gets himself killed, then YOU are the one getting game overed. Image IPB For the grand finale, you can't ever interact with, or command the npc. (Once again, another evil glare for the Dynasty Warriors & Samurai Warriors game series') What's worse about this is that sometimes it can be so bad, that it's another one of those kinda things that forces you to be either cheap, overpowered, or both, to get the mission done. Forcing fair play to fail is completely broken gimp game design.

What are these people gonna do next, make an escort mission from point A to point B on a high mountain, & program the escorted npc to intentionally keep trying to jump off the mountain to it's doom? Where's the fun factor? Image IPB

(It can feel good to vent! Image IPB)

Edit: Fixed a missing word needed to complete a sentence my proofreading somehow missed. Image IPB

One exception I remember - Just Cause prison rescue on the first island. Not too bad. I don't think I ever saw that guy die. Plus when you are protecting the radio station, also not too bad. Not much I didn't like about Just Cause

I hated that part of ME. I don't know what BioWare were thinking when they slipped that into the game. They did something similar in JE as well. I hope they've learned their lesson.

That seems appropriate to me. Renegade isn't necessarily evil, it's ruthless efficiency, getting the job done at all costs. Your actions knowingly resulted in innocents dying. Thus you gained more reputation as a renegade.

However, it I had died during that battle, I know exactly how annoying repeating all that would be, so your point still stands.

I was playing Metroid Prime Trilogy  re-released for Nintendo Wii.  It's a first person shooter.  In it, you get an x-ray visor to see through walls and find hidden objects. When Samus throws her arm out in front of her as a self defense instinct, you can see her skeleton hand. It's a neat effect.

So I get the Phazon suit (final armor in the game), and it specifically shields against radiation. Guess what, she gets attacked - throws her arm up - sure enough - SKELETON HAND!.... protects against radiation?! What do you think x-rays are?!!

What was your class and difficulty level that allowed you to mow them down so easily?  I think I was on Hard and Biotech with Wrex and Garrus

I played through it with various classes/difficulties/companion combinations, including Wrex and Garrus. Usually I'm a Vanguard or Infiltrator, though. Sometimes it was slightly harder, but I never had to heal or died from that fight. Maybe it's just me. But we're derailing the topic a bit here.

On topic, I hate it in games where you can jump (Fallout 3, Oblivion), you can sometimes get stuck between a few objects and become unable to get free of them without using a noclip code. Good luck with that on a console system, too. Any time it happens to me on Oblivion (I have the Xbox version), I almost always have to reload.

I was watching my brother play Oblivion for a few hours last year. He got stuck in some random lump of ice in the middle of a forest. He spent the next 15 minutes trying to get out of it heh. I never have patience for that stuff, I just get upset and never touch the game again usually.

Half-life 2 had really bad clipping too. The first time I played the game I got stuck in a box. :(

@dragoager: Lol, that's a cool example! That sounds like it would be in the category of 'blooper'! (Not the Super Mario Brothers kind, silly!) Image IPB

@DalishRanger: Fully agree with that! I believe what you are referring to is a 'Geometry Bug' if i'm not mistaken. Those can be horrible! Especially if they halt your ability to get unstuck/proceed & force a last-save-reload! Image IPB

If you are outside and no enemies are around, you should be able to fast travel.  If inside, then you are out of luck.
This is one thing about Morrowind that bugged the heck out of me that the Fast Travel took care of in Oblivion

I personly hate it when an RPG where Looting is involved gives little variation in it, causing you to see the same armor and weapons being used over and over, and finding the same stuff as well. Same goes for NPC head variation though.

Oblivion is a good example. There are not even 20 different armor sets in that entire game I believe. That pretty much killed any reason to go exploring through the many dungeons the game has. Mods can fix it but it shouldnt be needed that badly.

Sadly Mass Effect is another example. Many armors and weapons in the game, but whats the point if it all looks the same? there is only one model for human light armor, medium armor and heavy armor, and these three models look very similar as well. Furthermore its just reskins. Only two different shapes for weapons too it seems.

Hopefully this wont be the case with Dragon Age and Mass Effect 2. Finding new armor and weapons should be fun.

I might have been spoiled by Dungeon Siege however, which was the first RPG I ever played, Neverwinter Nights being the second. This game did boast a rediculous amount of different armors and weapons however. I finished that game about ten times and even the tenth time I still found new items that I had never seen before. And neverwinter nights with its toolset and armor customization might offer over a milion of possible variations and combinations and colors.

After those two games pretty much everything else has been rather disappointing in this aspect while you would think it should improve over the years.

Sequels altering lore *cough*Oblivion*cough*

It is absolutely foolish and ruins the entire experience. Especially when you make it drastic, like going from near high fantasy to a medieval earth potatoes and radishes.
