Update:  After trying all possible fixes with no results, finally something I did worked:
I right-clicked DragonAge.ini and chose 'Edit' from the menu.  I deleted a line that looked like this:

NucleusOnlineLoginAuthenticationToken=[long line of letters and numbers]

For safe measure, I redownloaded and installed the following "post-installation third-party installers as per Dragon Age's installation log file:

(I didn't use any of the flags ( '/Q', etc.) but again, it might be necessary in your case, I don't know.)
vcredist_x86.exe /Q  (Visual C++ 2008 redistributable)
PhysX_9.09.0408_SystemSoftware.exe /q  (Nvidia Physx software engine--  might be different if you don't have an Nvidia card--  just check your DA installation log file)
EAAccessInstaller.exe  (I didn't even look for this one--  the game was already fixed but maybe it can help you)

******     Please note:  My computer has 3 DragonAge.ini files, yours might have multiples as well.  It's important to find the one associated with your currently-installed game.  Find DragonAge.ini by searching in your Start Menu or browse to your install folder ([Drive Letter]:\\%Dragon Age Install Path%\\Dragon Age\\Settings--  mine was in [Username]\\Documents\\Bioware\\Dragon Age\\Settings)

************______________________________________________________________************

I'm running a DIY AMD Phenom (I), Geforce 8500 GT, Windows 7 64-bit, using Dragon Age Ultimate Edition downloaded from Direct2Drive.

After looking all over and trying all the fixes I found, none of them work. This is as of November 3rd, 2010. Most of what I find is from 2009, before the 1.04 patch came out, which doesn't help me at all.

I tried:

-uninstalling and reinstalling (very fun having to download it again just to reinstall ~12 hrs)
-tried patch 1.03 and 1.04
-uninstalling Adobe Air, restarting the computer and reinstalling patch 1.04, letting the patch install it
-copying the settings and save games over to the new install, after trying it without those files
-no updates for my graphics card or any of my other hardware*
-I tried rolling back my mouse driver update (which was updated just before DA:O stopped working, and restarting the computer
-nothing to update in Windows update, optional or recommended
-updated Adobe Aero

*the only thing that changed on my computer just before it stopped working was that Windows finally decided to recognize one of Microsoft's own mice that I've had for months-- the blue-laser-colored ("Bluetrack") comfort mouse 4450-- and install the proper driver.  I mention this because someone else was getting blue-screen crashes that alluded to a file he tracked down to be his mouse driver.  I've also heard of issues related to AMD Phenom, but mine is the black edition 9950, so it might be that the issues were related to the well-known faultiness of the early Phenom I releases.  I've not had any issues with my computer since I upgraded to the Phenom.

So what gives and why after all this time is it STILL not working, or working crappily for the lucky few?

Wow. I am sorry for your luck! My game didn't take me 12 hours to redownload! It took like 30 mins! But yes, I am still looking for a fix. I too tried the patch thing and it still crashed. But, in a 3 hour time period I was finally able to kill the Arch demon! Not that I was failing but because it kept crashing. I checked my cpu and Vcard temps and they aren't over heating. I updated all my drivers! Idk... If anyone else finds something, feel free to advise! =)

Pixies, where did you find your .ini folder? And how did you select which DAU (Dragonage Ultimate) programs to install?

jorge-- Are there any other available quests to complete? What version of Windows do you have? Run the game as admin if you aren't already. Are you patched to 1.04? Other than all the ideas I mentioned trying in my previous post, I'm not sure what else to suggest.

My isssues are with awakenings only. First, the NPCs give me the quest and I get the items and they don't update the quest and the NPCs will not update and ask me if I found the items yet or don't bother to talk at all. My next issue is I cannot click on the new class abilities to unlock them that I bought from the vendors. Other than that I have no issues with awakening, but I have stopped playing this until I can get some answers to why this does this and how to fix it. I have all the Patches installed.

I bought Dragon Age: Origins on Friday, installed it and it played fine on Saturday. i have not downloaded any patches or extra dlc yet. However, tried to play it today and when I click 'Play' it says the program cannot start because file d3dx9_36.dll is missing from my computer, it recommends a reinstall to fix the problem. Is there any way around this problem without re-installing? I am playing Dragon Age: Origins product version 1.0.9353.0

It actually wants Dx9 reinstalled, not the game, and allowing Microsoft free rein to do whatever it wants as an automatic update is how you set yourself up for such mistakes.

QFT

Set it to notify me of updates but do not install.  As Gorath Alpha states MS Update is a control mechanism over their product (fair enough) but it's your PC!

Looks like my quadcore wasn't wholly recognised on my vista 64bit. I had E5200 before and when i bought my q9400 my windows recognised only two cores of my 9400 and said other two were E5200. I wonder if that was giving me low fps ingame. If it was that i definetly owe bioware apology after all my ranting...well i'm gonna give it try after finishing divinity 2

I've played through multiple times with Wardens' Keep installed, so I'm playing again and my character spoke to the guy at camp, but the map icon for the Wardens' Keep has never appeared. Now what?

I've been having issues with Alastair leveling up in the Dragon Age: Origins Ultimate Edition. Everytime Alastair levels in the very beginning of the game, the game subsequently crashes. In crashing I mean a Windows box opens saying "Dragon Age: Origins has stopped working" and I'm forced to have to close the program. I've patched by game completely and  reinstalled it twice, so I'm somewhat certain it has to do with my computer. I run with 4gb ram, Nvidia 8800gt and 500gb storage. I'm not a completely computer-savvy person so cut me some slack if what I've described is of little use. The issue occurs everytime I run across the bridge to the Tower of Ishal in the beginning of Dragon Age: Origins. When I meet up with the warrior and mage and subsequently start killing the darkspawn which populate the base of the tower, Alastair levels up, which causes the game to crash every time, without fail. I've tried to get around the issue but it seems almost impossible to stop Alastair from leveling up and crashing the game. I haven't downloaded any DLC or addons, I've merely tried to play the game. I'm currently playing the game in Australia- if that information is of use.
I would appreciate any help I can in getting around this issue, I'm at the end of my teather and about to return the game, I love RPG's and I'm reluctant to do so, but this error is game ruining and I'm honestly sick to death of these errors.

Besides examining the forum's stickied threads, and doing some archive searches, when you want to get help from your fellow game players in here, there is no way for us to give any advice without adequate information, so complete a proper report.

Hi. Sorry if this fix has already been posted but I have a problem with the ultimate edition. I got origins along with its DLC to work perfectly. However, on awakening, whenever I talk to a character, the graphic is all messed up not showing the character and I also don't get the cutscene involving oghren and the darkspawn so I am stuck on this part.

When playing origins and the DLC, no such problems occurred. Wondering if anyone has encountered such a problem.

Durante - try lowering your video settings, high can cause it if your computer can't handle high or if you have too many other programs open.  Even doing this, once in a while it will just freeze, then shut down, but not very often.

ive been playing the game for hours on the highest graphics ;... i can't continue any further now , and i tried with the lowest , it still crashes , i've seen a couple of posters with the same problem , only nobody really has a solution , since they all have diffirent systems you can't really blame it on the parts can't you  ? it has to be something wrong with the game ?

Since you have persisted in ignoring the Problem Reporting guides, you have no leeway at all blaming the game for anything at all.

My issue is that I'm having trouble getting Witchcraft for DAO and DAO:A to download. I've beaten Witch Hunt and everything but the two files for that are refusing to download. I've gone in and cleared the cache several times and still nothing. They just sit on the download progress screens. I had to redownload Dragon Age as I'd accidently deleted a file that kept making it crash and now this download issue.

EDIT: Disregard. I somehow finally got it to work.
