@Murdox
Please add your system specifications as by the first post in this thread. I was not able to find any post of you on this forum showing your system specifications, while your profile shows it is only 5 days old. Maybe you created a new account, but at the very minimum a link to your system specification readout from the Dragon Age configurator would be appreciated.
When using the headphone jack in the laptop you are still using the default audio chip of your laptop. In fact it is exactly the same signal as would be sent to the integrated speakers of the laptop. As you have an expensive gaming laptop I would expect the sound chip and drivers to support playing games however, you certainly paid enough to earn support with these kind of issues compared to a decent business notebooks which costs only half of this, I would check with Alienware/Dell if they can help you out if you still have support with them.
What adrichardson is referring to is an add-in card which has to be installed separately in your laptop in an expansion slot (PCMCIA/ExpressCard), or a USB device sound card which is often housed in a so called break-out box. For examples see:

@Basdoorn - Very odd, I have been around since last year, before the forums were all merged over here. Not sure why it is showing my account as only 5 days old. Very well, I will post another dxdiag when I get the chance, but for now my system specs are:

Alienware M17x Release 1

Intel Core 2 Quad Extreme QX9300

dual Nvidia GeForce GTX 280M GPUs

4 GB RAM

Windows Vista 64

Chipset: nVidia MCP79

I know about add-in sound cards, but I didn't understand him to be referring to that in his message. I was bit puzzled by his reference to "use the headphone jack," as making a difference in my case. In any case, I have not suffered any slowdowns, like other people, but I suffer from frequent CTDs. I have updated all my drivers and tried several different tricks that people have posted here, as I mentioned further up. I have not been able to find any new sound driver for my computer since one was posted by Dell last July.

When is Bioware going to fix this problem?  Right now I'm playing through for my 8th time, I'm in the Circle Tower and it is crashing constantly. I'm wanting to get this character through as an Arcane Warrior and its really starting to ****** me off.  I've bought Awakenings, and hoping that this nightmare doesn't carry on in there.

Surely Bioware has gathered enough information by now.  The machine I'm on is a stock HP Pavilion Phenom II with an ATI hd4650 1Gb video card, 8GB RAM, running Windows Vista, it should not be having problems

Ok, thought this was worth reporting.

I played the game with the 1.03 patch with no major problems beyond a combat lag in the very largest battles in the end. The only slight annoyance was some choppyness in certain areas (like Dennerim market district). But nothing too bad.

I recently bought and installed an extra half a megabyte of memory, thinking that my previous 1 GB was somewhat on the low side for these days anyway. Directly after this extra memory update, the problems started - while the occasional choppyness almost completely vanished, I started getting REALLY BAD combat lag.

Now I get combat lag even in smaller battles like, for example, the fight against the bandits when you enter Lothering for the first time. In small battles the lag isn't game breaking, just extremely annoying. Anything larger, and the lag gets utterly ridiculous. <_<

I happen to have a system report from a few months ago, and I now took a new system report after the memory update, and the start of my problems.

Here's the requested info from the earlier report:

The sound subsystem is a bit buggy at this time which can cause the game to Crash To Desktop. I would suggest waiting for the next patch (no release date yet) which lists improved audio handling reducing CTDs. If you want a solution now and are gladly willing to spend the money on an external sound card targeted at gaming this could help as it will hopefully have better drivers which tolerate the game longer.

Surely you already know that the GT 120 is a (relatively) low performance video card by the current
standards, ending up somewhat above the minimum (practical) Geforce card, so anything other than
low/medium image quality settings at medium resolutions, or medium settings at low/medium
resolutions, is likely to be beyond the point at which it should be running?

Don't know what you're talking about. Works fine for me.

Getting crashes fairly often, even at fairly low settings. Seems to be happening with either alot of sounds or alot of visual effects. Trying to peg down which it seems to be? At Ostgar siege, first playthrough.

Happens when effects get above a certain point, too many wolves start to howl. Problem usually rights itself for another 1hr of play if I exit for five minutes? Graphics card isn't hitting temp threshold though.

Game seems to crash at random. Two times I've been forced to do a hard reset, once it would go to the desktop and windows would send some information. Two of the times have been in Redcliffe Castle, the third I think it was at the campsite.

It usually crashes for me if I have to minimize and then restore the game window. Other than that, no issues.

A huge proportion of games resist the "Minimize" option.  It is very common, and the
fix is so very simple.  Just go to the game's Save menu, give that time to load itself,
and THEN you can minimize without any problem!

I have become extremely unhappy with this game and bioware about the compatibility issues with the radeon cards and Windows 7. I see a lot of others are having such issues as well with black-screens and blue-screens. Although it is a problem with the 3 factors. I believe it is the responsibility of Bioware to check such things. Are we all to expect this level of support in future games?

Mine has been crashing since I bought it shortly after release date. I keep coming back hoping for a solution.  I'm unable to do anything but cold boot after the crash.

The least powerful HD 4n00 that runs the game properly is the HD 4650.  The HD 4350
CANNOT
run the game, and you shouldn't WANT to suffer with the HD 4550's very poor
performance.

Here the second one is next to the official minimum:

www.gpureview.com/show_cards.php

It can only manage about one third as good of a performance as the minimum!   Folks, the
single change of a "hundred" from the 4550's name to that of the 4650 represents literally
a "Quantum Leap" of change in performance, but the next jump, from a 4670 to a 4770 is
still a bit bigger yet.

The HD 4650 has the speed of the X850, with full SM-3 functionality, and many additional
shader units, although it doesn't have the wide 256 bit memory system, so is a bit more
limited on how much VRAM it can deal with, and thus, how many total pixels it can handle.

Í'm also having more crashes after installing the 1.04 patch. Mainly during the boss-battles (archdemon/queen of the blackmarsh). The game crashes twice, and after reloading it the third time, I'm able to play on. Never happened before.

I haven't had any crashes for 2 weeks, since I started playing, until I installed the 1.04 patch, today. I had 3 crashes in the last 4 hours, almost always when I was fighting many enemies and using cone of ice or fireball. To keep playing I had to turn down (a lot) the resolution.

I'm sure it's not overheating, because I'm always watching the temperatures with everest.

I'm running it on a athlon 2 x3 435 overclocked to 3.1 ghz, 4gb ram, gt 240.

I'm having similar performance issues. The game will randomly crash to the desktop, telling me it has stopped working. I'm also still experiencing major lag issues, and extensive load times even after installing 1.04. I'm currently running 2.4ghz AMD quad-core processor, 3gb DDR2, and nvidia gts 250 on windows 7. The game did this pre-patch as well.
