I have looked through so many tech support topics, I don't have time to look through all of this one, so excuse me if this has been mentioned. I got a message after installing Origins, "PHIZXLoader.dll not found", which of course meant that I couldn't start the game. Anyone know what this means, and is there a fix for it? Thanks

Just a quick note on this one. I just installed the 1.04 patch for Dragon Age; Origins with the Awakening and have an interesting problem. I have had the Character Creator also installed and it worked fine until the 1.04 patch. Now when I run it and it gets past the cinematic my entire computer crashes! I mean all the way out of DOS and windows.

Has anyone else had this issue? I have run a full virus scan and nothing was detected.

Finally, after days of trying to install Origins, It worked. I also installed Awakening so I could get the 1.3 patch. I'm so relieved, I don't think I'll uninstall it until I've gotten all the dlc and DA2.

I'm holding off on the 1.4 patch until I see how it's working for others.

Arlana, thanks for the link, it actually had what I needed. : )

After installing the 1.04 patch Dragon Age Origins is crashing to desktop much more frequently. The game starts by slowing to a crawl. Soon after the screen turns black and the game shuts down. I was not having issues of this magnitude until I installed the patch. My OS is the latest version of XP pro. NVidia GeForce 8800 GTS 512. Other than the crashes and the strange conversation errors ( it's strange when a NPC not currently with your active party interrupts a conversation with something not even from the same conversation tree.) I haven't had any other issues with Origins.

Bioware, when are you going to fix this game? Numerous day-one bugs persist with no acknowledgement from the developer. These include, but are not limited to, the following:

Ancient Elven Boots not present in game - requires mod
Haste effects on ranged attack speed - scripting error
Unimplemented effects (weakens darkspawn, improves monetary gain, healing effects increased, etc. - either implement these or remove them from the game as having unimplemented effects on items throughout the game is confusing) - this same problem plagued NWN2 and Obsidian blamed the issue on legacy effects left over from the engine they inherited from another company - I don't think Bioware can make the same claim for DA.  Bioware continues to put these effects on items present on new DLCs, so I'm wondering if they just don't realize that they are unimplemented.  Why continue to put unimplimented effects on items in new content?

In addition, Awakening can not be played without the 1.03 or 1.04 updates, yet these updates break numerous features of the expansion pack itself as well as paid DLC content. For example:

Shale's Rock Barrage ability does nothing if 1.03 or 1.04 are installed, either for DA:O or DA:A - DLC files are encrypted, so the community can not fix this issue, only Bioware can
Find Vitals references the wrong effect, so it actually adds 5% spirit damage, which is the effect of another, completely unrelated talent - this is a scripting/coding error
Several pieces of equipment are present in the game files but not available through normal play (e.g. Blackblade armor) - some alternatives are available via modifications but Bioware's original intent is unknown so it is hard to call them "fixes"

Get a new computer... try to play Dragon Age Origins... and it won't even work for ten minutes before crashing.

The game is crashing far more frequently sense I installed 1.04. What's the deal. Patches are supposed to fix things not break them.

I just started looking at this topic. I haven't read the first 12 pages. But I have a vista box, running 4 gigs of ram, and more than enough hard drive space on my main drive to hold the game 10 times over.

The game works fine, on a good day, for roughly 30 ~ 45 min. Then it bogs down and stops. Bad days I'm rebooting every 10 ~ 15 min. At least I'm garenteed to get the two achevements for not dying, I have to save every time I exit combat.

I too have an amd x3 processor. Just like serra mine says it only has 1 core in system config.

JacenR's 4 core x4 has all of its 4 cores detected. Ive noticed other people who have posted their system information in this thread with an x3 are only having 1 core detected.

Does dragon age not support 3 core processors?

Hi

Games crashes often when using spell Winter's Grasp. I had a custom tactic with Morrigan, which included Winter's Grasp to be cast on target of main character. This caused frequent crashing. No problems when I changed WG to Lightning.

No response from the developer means you can expect more of the same with DA2. Magic 8-ball says, "don't buy it."

The game is crashing far more frequently sense { "SINCE" } I installed 1.04. What's the deal. { "?" } Patches are supposed to fix things not break them.

It seems to be a waste of time and space to add anything more to this thread (most likely, anyway).  It seems that Victor created it, and never actually did anything with it.  Basically, we have a few gamers trying to fill in some support gaps, and rather little interest from either Bioware or EA in actually communicating with anyone about anything.

The sample query included in the quote shows the lack of understanding of a comsole-type game player regarding the components inside of the enclosure (tower box).  He has omitted all reference to the most critically important hardware inside of a machine intended to play games!

Anyway, if you want to avail yourself of whatever help those other game players may be able to offer, ignore the foolishness about including all of the goofy looking HTML and XML code that makes reading the information very difficult.  Do this, instead:

Start your own individual message in here.  This next is a useful template for information that will assist with problem diagnostics:

Game Version:   9.- -  (also include expansions installed)
Retail or Digital: Retail DVD / Digital Version Vendor
    Processor Manufacturer: AMD / Intel
    Processor Type: Athlon 64 / X2 / X3 / Pentium / dual core, Pentium D, i7 Quad Core, etc.
    Processor's  Core Speed:  -.- GHz
Operating System / Service Pack: Such as WindowsXP/SP2, Windows Vista/SP1, W7 etc.
    System RAM:  X.x  GBs
Direct3D APIs dated:  (Dx9 version date)
Video Card's chip on the card, Manufacturer: Either ATI, or  nVIDIA, not including Intel (no support).
Video Card Model: (examples only) Radeon  HD 5670 / Geforce GT240
Video Card RAM: (example) 256 MBs
Video Card Driver Version: (examples) Catalyst 7.10 / 196.21 (use numbers, not the word latest)
Sound Card Manufacturer: Creative Labs of whatever make or brand
Sound Card Model: SB XFi or whatever applies for your sound card
    Sound Card Driver date:
Sound Card Driver Version: 4.34 (again, numbers please)
DVD Type: (DVD/ROM or DVD/RW, SCSI IDE, etc.)
Hard Drive Type: (SCSI, IDE, SATA)
Free Disk Space:  C:\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ 15GB (Indicate additional drive letters and amount of free space where game and saved files are located if you have multiple or partitioned drives).
Power Supply:  (include brand and wattage rating of the power supply and amperage on the 12-volt rail for PCs). This information is usually available on a label on the power supply.

Description: Describe your technical problem as best as you can
(Now quoting Bioware's Chris Priestley)

"      Problem Details

a.      When it comes to problem details, think about the five basic questions. Who? What? When? Where?
Why? Okay, so “Who?” doesn’t really apply here, but the others do.

b.     What? What is the nature problem that you’re seeing?

c.      When? When does the problem occur? Every time you engage in a particular action or only
after so many hours of play?

d.     Where? Where does the problem occur? Is the problem localized to a particular planet or does
it occur everywhere?

e.     Why? As much as possible, can you isolate the problem to a specific set of steps?

If you follow these guidelines, and provide the requested information when posting, it will increase the likelihood that someone will be able to help you diagnose the problem and find a solution."

hi. im new to this. i want to purchase dragon age origins for pc becuz i see it's better in the sense of controls. but i am afraid my computer wont handle it or there will be all these crashes and what not.  im not sure where my computer stands on all the fancy stuff of today so these are my specs:
xp 32bit
pentium 4, 3.00ghz
2.99 ghz 3GB ram
radeon 4670HD 1GB video card
i downloaded and played the mass effect 2 and mafia 2 demo and they ran great. im not sure if that means DAO will also. im just wondering if i'll be able to play this game without any problems. thank you

I have eliminated my crashing issues by uninstalling Origins/Awakening with 1.04 patch and reinstalling which brings you up to 1.3 patch with the retail version of awakening. I observed 2 issues

1) total crash to desktop with the sound stuttering afterwards that won't go away without windows reboot. This used to be a DX9 limitation, somewhat surprising to see it in a newer game

2) on initial game entry screen (resume/new/load), clicking resume fails for the first several attempts saying downloadable content not authorized even though lower left shows I am logged in. My supposition at this point is that the software is in a mumble mode state not handling a 4 processor system correctly. This eventually goes away after about 30 seconds and you can resume. Again fixed by backing out to 1.3

Im sure Bioware has thousands of crash reports so I reccommend no one waste their time with screen dumps, only user tactics that have worked. Pity, I own almost every PC RPG Bioware has put out... may be time to move to PS3

If you are using an ATI graphic card (HD 4000 or HD 5000 series), check that ATI High Definition Audio Device is disabled in Windows Device Manager

2) on initial game entry screen (resume/new/load), clicking resume fails for the first several attempts saying downloadable content not authorized even though lower left shows I am logged in. You can avoid this issue by following these steps after the game launch and before clicking on New, Resume or Load:
1. from main menu, check that you are logged in then select Downloadable Content
2. if you see your DLCs on a green background and Points Balance updating, continue to step 7
3. wait for Point Balance to be updated
4. close panel
5. click again Downloadable Content
6. this time you should see your installed DLC on a green background and the Points Balance in update mode again
7. wait for Points Balance to be updated
8. close panel and load your saved game.
You only have to proceed this way on your first savegame load after each DA:O launch. Once this is done, you can directly load savegames during the same session.

Is it a continual problem (crashing in the Circle Mage's Tower) or has it been crashing at random points? To me -- and I'm certain others will correct me, if I'm wrong -- it just may be one of those dreaded random memory leaks which, with the game, still has not been resolved to everyone's satisfaction with the latest game patches.

I use a top-of-the-line Alienware computer and I still get the occassional crash, every now and then.

Well, that may be, but from what I can tell, my computer did a microsoft update this morning and the issue did not start till this afternoon/ evening, when I started playing again. So my thought is that whatever update was installed, the game does not like. I have run into something like this before with other games, where another program/app was installed later and something about the program/app did not play nicely with the game programming....usually I just uninstalled the program/app, my game was more important. no, it has only been doing it in the circle mages tower so far, but not always in the same place or at the same time. crash #2 happened when I opened a door into a room with bad guys....it was my save point so nothing was lost. crash #3, happened after I entered battle with different demons/monsters in another part of the circle mage tower. On the other hand game play between crashes can be no exsistent or more than 2 hours long...at least so far.

Don't judge too quickly by the content of this forum. Most people that post are here because they have issues with the game but many others don't have any. This is my case. I've played the OC in about 150 hours and I have experimented only two CTDs during this time. I have an non-important issue with Blood Dragon armor due to an authorization problem which I was able to solve. I did not find any glitch during the gameplay; everything work as expected.

just to let you know, I have been playing this particular game for a while and even after I installed each patch for the game I had no problems whatsoever. It only started doing the crashing after a microsoft update was installed, which tells me there may be a conflict issue causing the crashes. Even though the game crashed 6 times yesterday (haven't played yet today) the cause could be the things you install, and or update on your computer which could potentially be what is causing the crashes. Personally I love this game and a little bit of crashing will not stop me from playing it.
