Since having installed Patch 1.03, my game keeps crashing during combat... sometimes three times during the same encounter, sometimes "only" every third encounter.
At this level, the game is virtually unplayable, as I'm constantly kicked out of it.
I have already tried downloading the newest GPU Drivers, downgrading the GPU Drivers to an older version (i.e. Catalyst 9.7 instead of 10.4), I tried the TLB Disabler, I tried using the compatibility mode for XP SP3, tried running it in administrator mode... and guess what? Nothing helped, still keeps crashing.
This is utterly inacceptable, especially as it worked perfectly with the exact same setup before updating to 1.03... I was looking forward to beating the game once more, but that's currently a real pain in the ass to do.
I sure hope you won't let your loyal fans and customers down, Bioware.
System specs:
AMD Phenom II X3 720BE
ATI Radeon HD4870 512MB
4GB DDR2 RAM
Win 7 x64 Professional
Catalyst 10.4 (9.7 didn't work either)
DirectX and every other driver is as new as they come.
I have since re-installed DA:O and used patch 1.02 only - no more crashes.
So that's proof enough that patch 1.03 is indeed faulty and causing said crashes.

Screen is cluttered with red pixels and then crashes about 1 second later. This occurred on occasion during the original game, but it now happens all the time in the expansion, and the game is unplayable at this point.

L600MAT: Do you have the latest drivers for your video card? I believe ATI catalyst 10.2, which was quite recent, had issues with a lot of cards, so it might help to check ATI's website and grab something more up to date. Besides that, I would shut down programs running in the background and run a defrag. I'd also touch the back of the power supply casing while gaming to check if the heat is uncomfortably hot; this is usually indicative of power supply issues--which, while I doubt is an issue for you, might be worth the check.

I mean, trying to catch a hidden issue from his patch that troubles thousands costumers around the world???
You think we must to change our configuration in order to solve a BioWARE/EA technical fault?
this is ridiculous ... After that case, Ill never censure a pirate gamer ... at least he did pay for this ****

Actually, sadly enough, you are wrong on almost every count, and none of it offers you any excuse to argue with another game owner who is just trying to help someone else. This is *NOT* an official support forum, although this particular thread was started by a Bioware person. VENTING is off-topic here. That's in the forum, and by extension, in the thread.moonblade_820 wrote...

There is an Off-Topic forum for you to do that (Vent) in. If you want immediate help, you go to EA. Period. To obtain the assistance of whatever other gamers might have something useful to suggest, follow the instructions that are referenced here (including creating your own problem thread):
Regarding including adequate information in a problem report, DA O:
social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/58/index/436011/1#2352507
For the purposes of this particular thread, read the OP at the very start and follow through on that.

I acknowledge the fact that there are software issues introduced with the latest patch and so on. However, I do not experience these issues and thought I could offer suggestions on ways of troubleshooting, for very often, problems occur for different reasons. Since when did I suggest that you must change your setup to solve this problem?

Update to the issue, it seems to be crashing mainly on save; be this quick save, proper save initiated by me, or a save initiated by the game. This is occuring in the Dead Trenches area and I went out into the previous area and initiated a save with no adverse effect. The crash happens quickly enough for the saves not to have taken.
Update 2: Reinstalled all drivers, managed to get through the Dead Trenches after all that. Played for about 6 hours (not constantly) and then the crashes started again, this time at random. However they slowly built up over time to become more frequent, until they were 10 mins apart, the finally indignity being my last 7 saves became corrupt and I'm currently nekkid at the start of a fight due to it being the last good save but apparently there is a glitch resulting in me being in my undies weilding a big sword.
Update 3: reformatted my PC, and then installed Windows 7, it was extreme but it did the trick, have played continuously without any crashes since though the performance is a lot slower - but that I'll put down to the PC rather than the game.

although this is NOT a official forum, and we are willingly trying to help bioware/EA this is still a EA/bioware problem. Trying to change some configurations will not help to solve the problem. Its more like administrate an aspirine to a sida's pacient ... So mind your words, the problem isnt so difficult to solve ... a brief looking on the information posted here permits to know where the problem remains. Anyone who knows about programing language/structure and a hardware display could, at least, point the posible solution ... If bioware/EA didnt solve it yet, another reason is covered. I think Maybe its a patented information is causing all this trouble ...
And maybe you just wanna help, maybe you have a technical knowledge or maybe you are just a boy with good intentions, neither this alternatives gives you the right to convince anyone to change his set up or being rude with someone else ...

Be calm? What are you trying to accuse me of? Mind my words? I didn't say anything about changing your configuration. What are you talking about??

Possible solution, that was exactly what I was trying to do here. There are many solutions to many problems, and I was simply pointing out with what I know about possible ways to troubleshoot. It may not solve some problems, but its better than nothing and would explain specific cases of game instability. That is all. You have no right for flaming me with your personal vents. You should think about your own words before telling me to be calm.

Please can someone advise if any work is being done on this random crash
issue. Currently unable to get past the opening fight of the Dead
Trenches as it crashes constantly, I did try (as someone advised
earlier) selecting an alternative target to fight but it only bought me
another 5 seconds before the next crash. I did have a similar issue
when I first installed the game last weekend, but resolved that by
changing to windowed mode.
This particular stability issue seems to have been experienced by various users in the past. Try checking out this thread here: http://social.biowar.../index/213364. Some users have reported a possible workaround. I believe there is a small glitch somewhere in the Dead Trenches, though I cannot quite comment on what it is.

I deeply apologize for writing about this issue. It was such a simple fix I was not thinking. Im sorry If I bothered anyone. Have fun playing!
Just open a new thread or ask on the patch 1.03 thread. Someone is sure to help.
THIS thread is specifically for technical information for Bioware developers: They want system information only so anything else is off-topic for this particular thread.
Second, to help us understand the types of systems that experience these problems, we would like to ask you to post some information into this thread.
To get your system information, open up the Dragon Age launcher and click the "Configure" button.
Click on "File" in the upper left and select "Save Report..."
Save this report someplace where you can easily find it, such as your Desktop or My Documents folder.
Open the report file named "DAOriginsConfigReport.xml" either in a web browser or a text editor like Notepad. You will want to copy and paste individual parts of the xml file. Copy the following ONLY the following sections into your post:

A few weeks ago I uninstalled DA:O, installed again and patched to 1.02, no issues were encountered after doing this. Today I downloaded patch 1.03, installed the patch without installing DA:O A expansion and the game began crashing again during combat.
I had created a restore point in Windows, before installing the patch, given my previous experience with patch 1.03; and after going back with system restore to the point before the patch was applied I was able to resume normal gameplay without experiencing crashes to desktop.
Below is the system info requested:

I really hope a new patch will be released soon as I am not able to play Awakening, and will not be able to "play" (EA read "buy" here) any new DLC that requires patch 1.03. Here's hoping someone at BioWare will be able to fix this soon and this helps.

I didn't think that my CTDs could be the result of a DirectX issue as I had already uninstalled and reinstalled DirectX from the ME2 disc, and afterall Mass Effect 2 had come out after DA:O so the drivers had to be good. Installed the package he recommended, rebooted, and lo and behold, I was able to finish off Shale's personal quest, play over 2 hours without crashing before simply exiting normally.
The game did feel abit more sluggish at times during battles when compared to patch 1.02 and same maxed settings. I just lowered anti-aliasing and everything was fast again. Don't mind having to have lowered the graphical settings as I 'm at least finally gonna get to play Awakening without having to fear the game crashing every time I enter combat.
Below is a link to the executable I ran:

I hope this helps others that are having the same issue I experienced. And I must apologize for being a tool after whining about this for a month.
Thanks to everyone that posted suggestions in this thread and the forums.

I must admit that I feel quite foolishas I write this today. At the urging of a friend who had told me several times that he experienced no crash to desktop issues after patch1.03/Awakening, I installed the developers redistributable package of DirectX.

Somehow I don't think this did it... either you're just very lucky or... very lucky. Installing the redistributable did nothing for me.

hehe
Turns out my processor isn't strong enough to handle the game! I'm looking into solving the problem in the very near future, so hopefully you won't be seeing me post here again.
