hello everyone,

I'm new to the forums and this is my first post.  I was just wondering what I could with the Toolset.

First, I just wanted to provide some background info, so you know where I'm coming from and what I'm looking to do with the Toolset.  It's kind of long, so please bear with me.....lol

I have always been a console gamer.  I've never played PC games, mainly because I prefer to play on a big screen, and because my I'm not sure if my PCs were powerful enough to play PC games.  Thus, I have never used any kind of Toolset/mod software before.

Well, I've been playing Dragon Age Origins on my XBox 360 since it came out last year.  I've really enjoyed the game.  But, as I've been playing it, I've found myself wondering:  "Gee....I wish I could change this or that.....or that my character can have this origin or ability that she can't have....or I can start with this weapon......or create an armor that looks like that......etc."

IOW......I really wish I could create my own story and origins, and really be able customize my character the way I want to.

I know that PC users have access to the Toolset, which us console users don't.  So, I'm considering buying the PC version, so that I can try out the Toolset.

Basically, I was just wondering......how much can I control/change using the Toolset?

Like, could I create my own unique origin story ( with dialogue and cutscenes ), in-game dialogue with party members, my own unique weapons, armor, specify what stats/abilities/specs my character starts out with, etc.

For example, here's the origin/story I'd like to give my character ( please forgive me if the story sounds lame.....lol )

I want to be a Female Human Mage, but with the Human Noble origin. She was "born" a Blood Mage ( with Arcane Warrior potential ), but her parents ( Couslands ), fearing she would be taken away/hunted by the chantry as a maleficar, forced her to keep her powers hidden. Thus, she was raised as a normal girl by her loving parents who instilled her with compassion and good morals.

When Howe's men attack the Cousland home, she unleashes her Blood Magic to defend her parents. But her parents urge her to go with Duncan, who offers her the chance to become a Warden to avoid being hunted by the Chantry. When she arrives at the Ostagar camp, she dresses up in armor, to disguise herself as a warrior instead of a Mage ( Duncan agrees to keep her Blood Mage status a secret, too ).

And then the story takes off from there. Throughout the story, she must come to terms with being a Blood Mage, how that affects her relationship with the world of Ferelden and other characters ( like Alistair and Wynne ), and also discover her potential to be a powerful Arcane Warrior. In the end, I'd also like her to be able to become Alistair's queen, since she is a Human Noble ( but a blood mage ).

Also, I'd like to create and giver her unique weapons and armor. Like, instead of the default Cousland Family sword and shield that you get in the Origin story, I'd like her "family weapons" to be a sword that looks like the Vigilance sword from Awakening, and a dagger that looks like the Voice of Velvet dagger from Awakening.

In terms of armor, I'd like her to be able to wear armor that looks like Templar or Duncan's armor.....or else create my own "armor robe/dress" hybrid.

In terms of specs/stats/abilities, etc., I'd like her to start out with Blood Mage already unlocked ( like how Morrigan already has Shapeshifter unlocked ).  I'd like to specify what spells she starts out with.  But, I'd also like her to have access to Warrior and Rogue talents and abilities.  I want to create a hybrid Mage/Warrior/Rogue.

or, maybe I'd like to modify the story a bit.  Instead of a Human, I'd like my character to be an Elf Mage.  But, be able to use the female human faces in the Character Creator to create my Elf.  And have her take part in the Human Noble origin story ( she was adopted...lol ).  And, have her become Alistair's queen in the end.....

I know that this sounds very detailed.  But, I'd really like to customize my character, and her story, to how I want it, while staying within the general confines of the Dragon Age Origins story.

Will I be able to do any of the above using the Toolset?  Or, am I asking too much?  lol

thanks.

it's all doable but you have to do a lot of work. if you're completely new to modding and hardly handled an editor before you will be put in front of an overwhelming task. it's not that difficult but you have to read a lot of tutorials especially about scripting (like adding a new class/origin).

hey thanks! that's great to hear!

yeah......I'm new to modding.

Are there any tutorial sites you could point me too, especially about adding new class/origin?

how bout any mods that I can download, and maybe use as a template/example to do my own work?

where's a good (safe) place to download mods?

thanks.

The wiki has an origin tutorial.

I'd start with the basic tutorials, though.

To echo what Semper said - what you want to do is possible, but challenging. You'll need an ocean of time and patience.

For examples, you can look at most of the official material to see how it's put together, or at some finished mods.

You asked about Awakening. It is possible to mod it. However, the toolset doesn't have access to all of the unique Awakening and DLC components yet. Naturally, we hope that Bioware will release them one day, but AFAIK they've made no commitment.

In some ways, modding the official campaign might not be the easiest place to start.

If you had a very narrow focus (e.g. just adding new weapons), modding the OC would be the obvious choice, because you'd only need to learn about one aspect.

However, to get to grips with a broader spectrum, you might find it easier to build a simple standalone campaign first (even if it's just two rooms), to understand the principles without the complexity.
