Why is it that when I play Mass Effect 1, I get slight issues with FPS lag and having to reduce the graphic settings to smoothen it, while I can play Mass Effect 2 with settings which are same as standard or even higher without any major problems?

Also, I have some slight issues with the sound, that some parts of the game seems to "miss". For instance, when firing the sub-machine gun constantly and "skipping" abit on the sound meanwhile or when walking on the stairs between the Command Deck and Crew Deck on Normandy. And yes, I've tried switching Hardware and Software mode on the sound settings, but I don't hear much difference.

Is this all because ME1 is "too old" to fully cooperate with the systems of my PC, like having a too new graphic card?

Graphics: ATI Radeon HD 5770
Processor: AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3800+
RAM: 2 GB
OS: Windows XP

Sounds a lot like my experiences with the MEs. (XP, 2 gigs RAM, Athlon 64 x2 4050e, Radeon HD 4770).

I imagine the FPS lag is the CPU bottlenecking performance, but I can't be sure. I don't think it has to do with ME1's age, but rather with ME2 being better optimized - Bioware upgraded the version of the Unreal engine they were using, and doubtless made tweaks of their own besides, that really do let it do more with less.

I have sound-cutting-out issues too. I was able to alleviate them by following advice I saw elsewhere:
Open My Documents\\\\Bioware\\\\Mass Effect\\\\Config\\\\BioEngine.ini and go to the section with the heading [ISACTAudio.ISACTAudioDevice]
Change MaxChannels to something decently high, like 32 or 64 (I stuck with 32 as there is probably going to be a limit to what your sound chip can handle).
Change TotalAvailableChannels to MaxChannels minus 2 (e.g. 30, if Maxchannels is 32)

I still have the occasional sound bugginess, especially during combat when all sorts of sounds are supposed to be going off, but walking & talking is pretty much perfect.

Mass Effect runs so much worse than Mass Effect 2 because the original was built for the Xbox 360 before the 360 had been released so it wasn't very well optimised. This carried over to the PC port. ME2 was designed for a console that actually existed while the game was being developed. Also ME2 was created to work great on both 360 and PC rather than being ported to PC later.

Mass Effect doesn't have a low frame rate on my PC but the GPU fan makes so much noise I have to play it with earphones.
