Can't speak for others, but for me it's less the fact that you don't want to play as aliens than it is the fact that you refuse to be associated with "ugly characters" that boggles the mind and offends sensibilities.  I mean, wow.

Speaking of ugly characters. Have you looked at your avatar's face?

So you're playing a game that revolves around building race relations with dozens of species of aliens, in order to save the galaxy...and you refuse to play the game if that actually means teaming up with some of those aliens?

Have a little irony, it's good for the blood.

Uh, sure it's a "fun RPG", but it's also kinda about a genocidal threat on a galactic scale, so... people die. If you went into this thinking it would be Care Bears in Space, then yeah, I guess it's just not the game for you. Most fans of the franchise thought the decision on Virmire is one of the game's high points because it makes the threat feel more real than if everyone always magically survived everything just because you want them to.

LOL! Yeah, I totally agree. That mission was just totally awesome. One of my favorite parts of Mass Effect 1.

That's YOUR opinion.  But all the lads and ladies in Ferelden say otherwise.  My mage GoatOlive the Mighty Invulnerable is a man's man and a man's man-ho, and everyone wants a piece.

The original poster must be very lonely if she must seek this level of solace in her human squad. She probably pretends that Kaidan is her real boyfriend and that Ashley is bound to call her up and ask her to go out for milkshakes.

take Liara, throw a helmet on her and voila? Asari bodies are the same as human ones... You won't be able to tell the difference

On one hand, I think the OP is overly complaining.  It's a violent game with a lot of dangerous stuff.  I'm sorry if everybody isn't protected by a magical shield of main character invincibility.  If you don't want to be with people who might die, play a peaceful game.  Especially as you do get at least a little choice.  It's not like if the game was programmed to kill off your romance option no matter what, with nothing you can ever possibly do to avert it.  Or kill off your "best friend" or whatever with no choice at all.

There is one related good point though.  I had no problem with the aliens.  But it should kindof be a CHOICE to use them.  Especially as a semi major themes the game sets up for you in terms of "how you want to develop your shepard" is "one big happy galactic community" vs "very pro human."

I took the galactic community option, but mass effect 1 would ****** me off a little if i took the pro human route.  When the game sets up large amounts of dialog and / or actions geared toward being a very "human centric" shepard, why the hell does it make you work with so many aliens? For some chunk of the game, you can have at most one human squad member.

Especially because you arn't forced by outside circumstances.  It's not like the council gives you a direct order to work with some asari spectre on your mission or something.  You are forced by a lack of humans (i.e., just kaiden and ashley, and eventually just one of them).  You are telling me on the entire normandy, there are no marines or whatever qualified?  Or that shepard, with all his special forces experience, can't pick up some of his old buddies / contacts?

It justs seems odd that when one of the significant paths for character development involves being very much pro human, distrustful of aliens, etc... that even if you take that path, you have to work with aliens, not because of any circumstances outside of your control, but because of an inexplicable shortage of humans.  Like I said, it doesn't bother me, as I didn't take that path, but seeing as how that path is very much in the game, it seems odd they don't cater to it at all.

Mekkie, take my advice.

LOSE one of those characters (this adds drama; it's a sacrifice).

THEN play it through to the end, stick it out, and play ME2 where you can have human squaddies all game if you want to (as you work for a pro human organisation)

1. I dont like playing ugly characters. I'm sorry if all you macho men out there think ugly is better, but news flash. Girls do play games. And we tend not to like playing things with tentacles or blue and green skin.

2. Ashley and Kaiden have been my squad since Eden Prime. Aside from hating ugly characers, i do like to roleplay with them. Originally, that was the whole point of *roleplaying games*, wasn't it?
Kaiden is my romance interest, and Ashley is like my best friend. The fact that bioware gives you NO option to talk you way out of sending either of them with the salarians, and NO option of avoiding the scene alltogether kind of destroys the RP sense of the game for me. There's no way my character would ever sacrifice one of her closest friends to a suicide mission.

I don't care if you can have a squad of 10 humans in Mass Effect 2, I'm talking about 1 here. And I choose not to continue playing without my ALL 3 of my favorite characters.

You can laugh or flame all you want, but I choose to not continue playing a game that greatly cripples the fun factor for me. Why play a game if its no longer fun?

Even though I disagree with you to a point, I understand fully where you are coming from.  I am a male gamer, but I am huge into RP.  I tend to be somewhat uncompromising in my views as well.  If I cannot have what I want I will walk away.  I respect you for that, because there are too few of us like that out there.

It sucks that you cannot keep your favorite characters, but...before you waste the money (not seeing the conclusion is a small waste in my opinion) consider the heroic and tragic sacrifice made by either Ashley or Kaidan.  Remember that sometimes tragedies make great stories too.:)

I know my feeble words are not going to sway you, but do consider that for future stories.  It would be a loss for you, I think, if you missed out on other great stories for the same reason.  :(

You do not have to like it.  You certanily do not have to continue playing...but you may be surprised by how much you enjoy it if you can push yourself to doing it.  ;)

If not, I wish you well in gaming.  I am glad you are female and gaming.  Cheers!

Sincerely,

Me

I think my favorite thing about this thread is the fact that Mekkie's avatar is an elf. That's so funny and appropriate on so many levels, I don't even know where to start.

I feel like that's more because you're looking for the galaxy's elite. You may not like asari, but you can note that they are damn good at biotics. And it would have been pretty hard for Shepard to find out about Ilos without Liara to decipher his memories.

Well, I did try to convince her that Tali was an acceptable substitute by being a space elf.

Haha, oh WOW. Mekkie, let me jsut say, that you make me PROUD to be a lady that enjoys playing games. Not. You are exactly why girls who play games get a bad reputation EVERYWHERE. Please, go and play Final Fantasy if you so desperately want an all-human squad rather than playing a game with aliens in it. Because you know what? The aliens in Mass Effect may not be pretty, but damn it, they're cool. They're WAY more interesting than the humans by way of their personality, the way they look, and culturally. It's absolutely fascinating to talk to the alien characters and read up on the journal entries. So what if they're not beautiful? Ashley and Kaidan sure as hell weren't. I might as well play with characters who are ugly and are meant to be.

To reiterate my point, please don't generalise what girls may think, because I hated the humans in ME1 and 2, and will probably hate them again in ME3. Aliens will always be so much better.

But if you really feel that strongly, don't pick up ME2, because you'll just complain at the end and make every woman who has played Mass Effect look bad.

Ahahaha. You know, I kept thinking I should suggest that because the FF games strike me as exactly the type of RPG where f**king everyone is "beautiful", and everything is always like totally wicked awesome. It's just that I've never played a single FF game because that's the vibe I get from them, so I figured I'd keep my mouth shut in case I was wrong.

To be fair, squadmates do die in FF games.  That said, they ARE all super stylized and bizarrely designed.  I used to like that about them when I was teenager, now that I'm older it seems dumb, but I did enjoy them back then.  I got sick of random battles and turn-based fighting though, so I tend to avoid JRPG's now (except The World Ends With You.  That game was sick.)

I always feel like I somehow should pick up at least one FF game because it seems like something I should at least have seen once, but then I watch a video on Youtube, and I want to rub vinegar into my eyes...
And just to be clear, I have no problem with people liking that aesthetic, I'm just glad there are games more up my alley like Mass Effect, and if someone who obviously just never should've picked up Mass Effect in the first place and now wonders why the aliens don't wear bows and sh*t rainbows, I'll reserve the right to point and laugh.

Dear everyone on this thread,

Stop hating the humans just because they aren't aliens. I however like both the humans, and Aliens a lot  in this series. A lot of people hate characters who actually speak there minds about things.... Also a lot people hate Kaidan for not being the stereotypical male you see in movies "who likes to crush bear cans on there heads". He is actually a kind, and caring guy, if you actually get to know him. Ashely for another example is not racist however she is mistrusting of aliens. That doesn't make her a racist just because she had said a vague political reference in the game about how the council would put their kind first which does tend to happen in politics more often then most realize.

Liara is a great person once you get to know her as well heck she risked her life just to save you.

Tali is another great character I think at least, but some of her fans scare me

Wrex is awesome as well he has saved my butt a thousand times from Krogon chargers

Garrus is awesome, and I love how dorkish he is in his romance around female Shepard. He does have a great background once you get to know him as well. Like him working for C-sect, and the Dr Heart thing....

Oh and Mekkie, please don't presume to be speaking for me (a female gamer). I like playing with "ugly characters" and blue- and green-skinned characters just fine.
