[Age of Dragons]

Is there anyway to do this main quest without encountering the crows in the back alley?
Every time I head down to where I am suppose to go I get a battle with the crows in this alley then Zevren turns against me and I am forced to kill him.  He is one of my favorite characters and I don't want him to die!  Also, I do not have any gifts so please don't tell me to do that.

Someone please help.  Thanks.
