Even in ME 1, at moderate range, of sorts, Shotguns were still quite viable.  Now, its pretty much point blank or nothing.  That kinda sucks IMHO.  :(

I believe the eviscerator is pretty decent at range... But ye offcourse you want them at point blank :P It kinda makes sense imo. Getting that dmg at medium range would be a bit op too

Shotguns are made to get close to your enemy.

I personally find it fun getting to a point blank range. That's why I always pick the Vanguard. Do a charge, whip your shotgun and kill everything that's in your way.

Combat shotguns are meant to have an effective range of about 30 feet, not 5.

It is pretty cool the way it is now. Players with shotgun are forced to play aggresively. Makes game more interesting and adds another playstyle.

Yes, but it also takes away a play style.

Why? You can use SMG, AR or Pistol for mid-range combat. Shotguns are ment for close range, if they were great for mid range too, what would be the point of other weapons?

It's a shotgun, why do I need a point to use it?

If I want a realistic shotgun, why can't I have a realistic shotgun?

Because it is a game? You also do not cast biotics with a sword, why?

Realistic shotgun with heatsinks? :D

I guess you could edit some .ini files (PC version) to give them a better range.

I would, but I bought it for the Xbox. :pinched:

You cant have a realistic shotgun when you cant really know how your enemies armor/bariers would function in a "realistic" way. If you want realism... I~ll ask you ... Why do guys lose armor when i hit them in the head? they arent wearing anything there, so i should oneshot kill them right?

and as to why you cant have a realistic shotgun... well, they just decided not to include one :P

I think the shorter range works just fine in ME2. In this game levels are a lot smaller and more cramped in most cases than ME1 plus a lot of classes have abilities that allow them to close distance rather rapidly or easily. (Charge, AR, Cloak, Singularity, Tech armor, Drone) in ME1 longer range was nice because most of the time you were pretty far away to begin with and there was no way to easily or quickly get right next to somebody.

It's about balance, I guess. If the shotguns had range on top of their high damage output, they'd become god guns. God guns ruin games.

Slow firing god guns? I think you mean sniper rifles.

The eviscerator has better range than the other shotguns if you absolutely must have range. The Claymore is amazing at close range - like people are stating, it is a balance issue. I'm always in the enemies face on my VG so range isn't a factor to me.

short gun in ME2 is not impressive enough. I don't use it. damage is not really impact visually. it's funny that pistol or sub machine gun is greater that it.

The Shotguns in ME1 also did relatively unimpressive damage. Do you want to bring that back too?

Shotguns have poor range probably for the same reason that the Widow doesn't get a close range damage bonus. I will admit though, imo the shotguns could stand to have a few more feet of effective range before it would be unbalancing. As it is, only classes with some ability to approach the enemy (cloak, tech armour, adrenaline rush, charge) can really use them.

And a single burst from an SMG should kill someone, and one shot to the head from a Predator pistol should dop the trick.  This isn't reality.

If a single pellet to the chest from a shotgun  were lethal, then yes... shotguns in ME2 would have a longer range.

Shotguns in ME2 are, for all intents and purposes, melee weapons.

They behave like a shotgun with a very short barrel firing buckshot (I don't know much about guns, but that makes sense yeah?)

The eviscerator is the only one with range because the spread is much less, there's a much tighter cluster.

If you want realism, join the army. Games must always have balance. Real life is preferably one sided.
