So, on a related note, when he says that only one person died in his Joining, does that mean there were just two of them? Otherwise he wouldn't be the junior Warden, would he?

That's one theory that came to my mind. I was not sure about it because why would Orlesian Warden travel all the way to Denerim. But then why would I assume the Joining was in Denerim?Shadow of Light Dragon wrote...
There could have been more. Riordan was present at Alistair's Joining, but he is the Senior Warden of Jader (located on the border of Orlais and Ferelden). It's possible that Alistair had Orlesian recruits going through the Joining with him.
The other theory is that whoever survived the Joining died before the battle of Ostagar.
There was discussion about it at SIB the other day. It was initiated by the question if the GW would keep new recruits out of the fighting for six months or if Duncan only did this for Alistair. (So Alistair mis-interpreted Duncan's concern because there were no other new recruits with him.)

I need a second original main character and I thought of a Rivaini mercenary. As far as I know some Rivaini follow the Qun, so he could be a little like Sten - so unfunny, he's totally hilarious. Warrior, greatsword - maybe spirit warrior? Any ideas?
Edit: Oh, and I saw the pirate. Whoever posted the Pirate!Alistair - thanks!

I love the commoner origin too, it's one of my favs. Duncan is fantastic. I just re-did it tonight to refresh my memory, since my DC has been in Lothering for the past month. I decided she needed to be finished.
I liked Alistair's stride here:
Nice package, too

Lol, yes I'm weird. :innocent:
Reading other fics hasn't bothered me too much - Kara has been in my head for awhile, even though I'm still fleshing her out and discovering things as I write. I just hate it when I come across a story element I had already planned on using, then I feel like I have to apologize and be clear that I had thought of it before reading it... >.>
Oh this. So much.
It's the reason I avoid reading playthrough/retelling DA:O - FF while writing mine, because I surely discover things I was planning to use and hate it to feel guilty for doing so. It has been my own idea after all, and I didn't grab it from another FF but my concious makes me think so then. Gaaah. So avoiding is my tactic since I started writing it...partly it makes me sad because I have missed good playthtrough ficlets like 'Merciful blood' or 'From the dirt' because of that. Well more to read for me once I'm finished with mine, I suppose.
The only ongoing ficlets I follow right now are Lady D's 'Sundered Order' ,The mistress Dalish thingie "I can handle it' (partly weird but still good) ,Surely's "Undertow" , Cousland after blight 'The night is full of stars'- FF and lurking into "The last Warden" which is a playthrough FF but due to the absense of the other Warden is different to read. Although even with those wonderful fics I struggle to catch up atm, le sigh.
FF.net is pissing me off again btw, I now am missing traffic for ten whole days and I'm still counting
@Sylv: Yes, about time I also read your little, fine piece, I say *is a lazy bun* >.>

I stopped reading new fics when I started to work on my own fic. I do so much research and I'm so concerned with background information, details and plot consistency that I somehow notice too much when a fic seems to lack something. It's no fun anymore.Merilsell wrote...

I wanna start drawing them. I had a wonderful inspiration for an Anders/Ser Pounce-a-Lot pic my daughter's cat mused to me. Now I just need to get some drawing paper and put it to visuals.

Mmm...could be because of Alistair's heritage. I think he mentioned somewhere that Duncan knew, but can't remember the exact words.

I shall try. My cat is completely devoted (almost doglike) to my teenager. She can't go ANYwhere in the house wthout the animal following her around and sleeping on her. I just saw her sleeping the other morning with him laying on her and it was so cute made me think of a really cool pic.
If I can wrestle my scanner to some semblance of cooperation I will try to post it but first I need to get some paper and pencils and draw it.

I especially have that when reading a Dalish fic...it drives me nuts when the author is making a Mahariel best friends with all her companions immediately after meeting and is uber-friendly to every stranger she sees. It just feels...artifictional to me. Then again I'm a sucker for slow friendship/reletionship building so this more a general thing and not restricted to Dalish ficlets, I guess. Though it especially strikes me odd with the general distrusting Dalish PC.
But I understand your reason, because I handle it similar. It's hard for me getting into new fics for this very reason.
Oh, the night is full of stars have I read until chapter 59 then I got bored and stopped. I was planning to catch up someday, but somehow the author isn't stopping to spawn chapters out, so having to read 40 chapter just to catch up makes me think meeh. I'm really too lazy for that currently...better spend the time needed on my ficlet or outside with my friends.
