However, in his earlier confrontation with Fiona, he says that he went because he was trying to avert the witch's prophecy about the Blight and thought that her prophecy might mean that he was supposed to go. He saw the situation as an existential threat to his kingdom. This is one thing that makes me think he disappeared deliberately later on and not in an accidental shipwreck. So even though he actually did want to die, there were actual, pressing, kingdom-related reasons for him to go with the Grey Wardens, too.
I forgot how moving his interactions with Fiona are. I like that story a lot.
