I'm sorry guys, IDK what I am doing wrong, but I can not get into the Zev relationship. I tried with my human mage, and my city elf. I wound up dumping him. I can't even tell you why.
It's not for everyone. He's fighting so hard to keep it casual, but he does slip quite often as well. But his past is ugly, and he's bound and determined to let the warden know exactly what he or she is getting into with him. He also doesn't have anything to offer the warden, and is very aware of that (yes, VO notes confirm all this -- not just crazy fangirl raving here).
There's nothing wrong with not liking the romance. If you want to see how it ends, after he falls in love, I can send you a save. The first time I did his romance, it was after my city elf was dumped at the landsmeet, so I missed a lot of the building and just got the to the good parts. And his declaration of love IS beautiful, though he never says the words.
So it's sweet as well as it's gritty. He always puts the warden first; the warden's happiness is far more important than his own. When he's forcing a choice, he does not expect to be chosen at all, and he wants the warden to feel good about dumping him. He's so relieved if you do pick him, it's almost sad.
He's falling in love, and just does not know how to handle any of it. In many ways, he's far more insecure than Alistair.
OR it's just casual sex, and he falls in love anyway. Dialogs support both, really. It's why there's so many debates about that in the ZevThread. But so much looks like he's falling in love from the start, and just fighting it the entire way.
Edit: Rereading this, I think it's really really obviously it's WAY past my bedtime!
