Well, I think it depends. I ended up spending quite a time away from Redcliff between quests, because after the circle tower (which is quite a long quest) and seeing Alistair's dream in the fade, when he asked to go see his family, we went immediatly because my Warden was already head-over-heels in love and was worried about him. At that point, my approval was high enough that I got the conversation as soon as I got back to camp after seeing his sister. Mind you, I didn't harden him (should I? Does that get interesting?)

I guess it's how you're RPing.

I mean, if you are going to the circle anyway and go to Denerim for Alistair's quest, you'd probably simply ask the mages for help and not use blood magic.

However, poking in the toolset (party_camp.dlg) there is no line check on hardened or not. The only thing that changes the dialogue is if the possibility blood magic or going to the circle wasn't even brought up (because you killed Jowan and didnIt ask for the other option) and the cunning option.

But you might be playing a bloodmage character. Or possibly you side with the templars and destroy the tower, in which case you can't have the help of the circle.

ARGH! You can't apply logic here! That's ruining my world view. :D

The fascinating thing about the DAO characters is that it really depends on your attitude towards them and not on objective facts whether they are likeable or not. I had the same experience with Anora in spite of hating that b*tch:pinched:

Another example is Wynne: I used to hate her because I played an anarchist bloodmage as first character, and obviously she would disagree with everything I did; but if you accept her and are nice she is actually quite likeable.

I hate to admit it, but she's a better leader then Alistair just for wanting to open a university alone, at least when he's not been harden.

But she kills many elves, and noone likes her! And she doesn´t have the blood of Calenhad!

I prefer Alistair. And especially I prefer my PC to be chancellor. I want someone able to rule to make the decisions, and quite frankly Alistair makes a better PR guy than Anora.

She doesn't have the soft heart that's true but she has the toughness to do the hard things and not runaway.   And does blood really matter?  I decided on that playthrough that no it doesn't and that Anora earnt the right.  For once when I sided with her, the landsmeet was in majority for the wardens and I didn't have to do the first battle and could go straight to the solo fight, so she has some respect from the people.  Made me think, well she 's obviously thought of in high regard, maybe I shouldn't be too quick to judge her

I definitly going to marry Alistair off to Anora on my male playthrough but haven't decided to harden him or not.  I want a tough but fair ruling over Ferelden, but I'm worried soften Alistair will runaway and leave Anora to it or harden Alistair will be too tough.

I don't get it. What is the problem with hardening Alistair? It's one snarky line and Alistair takes it surprisingly well. It also makes him more self-confident and he stops letting people walk over him.

I harden him every time but I couldn't bring myself to make him marry Anora and force him on the throne when he really doesn't want to. That's just too cruel.

Don't marry an unhardened Al to Anora.  He doens't want the throne and he's miserable being there in the first place, then to marry him to her (who reminds him every day of someone he hates) is worse than kicking a puppy.  If you are going to marry him to her and not be a total d*ck, harden the boy first.  He will be able to stand up to her better.  (and he makes a better ruling partner for her).  Al's forte is PR, Anora's is getting the day to day business done.  They make a good pair when they rule together but harden him first if you want a "happier" ending to your story.
My favorite ending was my Dalish who left Anora on the throne and Al and she went off together to be GW's.  Anora makes a creditable ruler (despite the food riot thing) and makes some good progress for Ferelden.

It really is better to let Isolde do it, though it's very, very sad.  But right to the end she really is only thinking of herself, even in the after-discussion with Teagan.  He's glad that no one else is going to suffer from the demon and she snarks at him for "celebrating" while her son is dead.

Do you have a video of that?  I've never seen it.

Of the after-conversation with Teagan?  I do, in fact.  I'll upload it now.

Here you go.

Sten approves of you killing Connor, even though he's not in the party.  *why ask why*  Zevran also approves, a slight bump if you let Isolde do the deed and a larger one if you knock her out and do it yourself.  I really think the latter is what Idun would actually have done.  For one thing, she would not take kindly to Isolde saying "I ORDER you to stop."  That is especially insulting to an elf.  But the bottom line is she wouldn't trust Isolde not to muck it all up royally and get possessed herself.

Ah, ty.  I've done everything just to see, but haven't kept it on a playthrough.

OK, Alistair fans: as a newbie, I have a couple of questions I'm hoping someone can help me with, please? Firstly, do we know how old Alistair is? I'd place him mid 20s (24-26ish), but I was wondering if there was a confirmed age anywhere?

Second, does anyone know if the story about Alistair's recruitment featured here is canon, or made up? (can't seem to find codex, but I could be mot looking hard enough).

Also, thanks for the youtube vids. I spent last night watching the ones where Ali gets betrayed at Landsmeet, and boy, did I feel bad.

From what we've seen, Gaider has said Alistair is 21.  He was originally intended to be older, which I think is the reason he looks older in the game.  I know some people dislike that he's supposed to be that young, but you can ignore if you desire.  Cailan is about 25, so I would just make Alistair younger than that.

And I haven't seen anything in game that would contradict that recruitment story.  Alistair only addresses it as having to be conscripted.  I take it as canon.  I don't know if anyone else knows anything else that might shed light on it.

Yeah, some of us did because we misunderstood what it meant.
He jokes and says: Meaning it was so great that the Maker himself decided to spare us the usual punishment?

It sounds cute, but he takes that as you being disappointed with him.   No more picking that line for me.

I was in a conversation with DG where someone was saying that this entry contradicted another, which I argued against.  DG hopped in to say that there was no contradiction - I'd take that as this being canon.  In any case, it's on the official page.  I take most stuff on there as being canon, 'cause the only way for it to get more canon is for it to be in the game, or in the books.  No one knows the character's backstory like the authors, right?

Can you even do that? Alistair won't give you his personal quest before you went to Redcliffe. You would have to leave Redcliffe again at some point, go to Denerim, complete his quest, harden him, get his approval above 70 to reaffirm the personality change, go back to Redcliffe and sacrifice Isolde.

At what point could you leave to do that? You could let Redcliffe fall, of course. Can you leave after Redcliffe was saved?

I thought you can get his quest before if he´s in the Fade with you, because there you learn about his sister.

Ha, actually I tried this on my first canon HNF. Went to the Circle first, avoided Redcliffe, pushed his approval above 90(!), no quest. It triggers only when you are going to Redcliffe, it would seem.

Oh, nice. I didn't realize that Brand had her very own loveless marriage theme. (My sister has submitted this song as Anders' theme song for Brand, which is kind of perfect in a tongue-in-cheek way).

I don't know how other writers operate, but I have to listen to mostly cheery music whenever I write depressing stuff. I find going sad makes me swing too far into the melodramatic. So my Undertow playlist contains a shocking amount of Lady Gaga, the Monkees, jangly singer-songwriter stuff and terrible power pop. I have some angsty stuff buried in there but it's almost uniformly upbeat.

That's really flattering! But it's not surprising since your reskins are awesome and tasteful, which makes them stand out.

I can't listen to music while I write, for the most part.  Listening to music activates my compulsive need to sing along, and just like I can't talk and write, I have a really hard time singing and writing.  So it's an old TV show or movie for me while I write, and music while I do other things, so I can listen to all the sappy, angsty music I want then.

depends on what I'm doing. Music helps me draw/work, writing I get distracted by it. Will listen for inspiration though, as lollerous as that sounds.

I can't do anything else when I write, I have to shut myself in a room with no-one else around. Sad I know. I can proof-read while the TV or music is on though.

I felt it would be fitting for Brand but I couldn't even pinpoint why. Oh, and I can't watch the video you've linked for the usual blah blah contains material of blah blah not available in your country. What was it?

I listen to music for inspiration while taking notes for the characters or chapters. I need to feel what they are supposed to feel. Sometimes I go through my playlist trying to find the one song that will give me the kind of emotion I was looking for. I can only hope no one watches me while I'm doing this because I'm must look like a lunatic cheering or crying for my own ideas.

But I have to admit it distracts me a lot.

I grew up in a house without doors and a mother who compulsively blasted the radio from 6:00 am to 11:00 pm, so I had to learn to read, write, study and sleep with music in the background at all times. I can't write with the television going (even if I can't see it) but I pretty much have to have music to write.

Um, not so lollerous. Every chapter draft I have is given the title of a song that I find could work at some point and most of them are, again, horrible

I used to be able to do it, but somewhere along the way singing became really compulsive.  Sometimes I can manage it, depending on what I'm writing.  Since the lab is quiet right now, I might switch on some music while I'm working on my thesis.  lol But it will be hard not to sing along when a good song comes on.  I find myself even "singing" to instrumental music nowadays...  >.>

Hehe I've got a chapter or two done or in the works that have song title names.... My last one was totally inspired by one of the DAO tracks and I just knew I had to write something on it.  I have a lot of scenes inspired or expanded upon because of appropriate songs though.

It's "Girlfriend" by Matthew Sweet. Here are the lyrics (linked to my BioWare blog to avoid crap associated with most lyric sites). It's relentlessly upbeat early 90's power pop.
