Second, does anyone know if the story about Alistair's recruitment featured here is canon, or made up? (can't seem to find codex, but I could be mot looking hard enough).

I was in a conversation with DG where someone was saying that this entry contradicted another, which I argued against.  DG hopped in to say that there was no contradiction - I'd take that as this being canon.  In any case, it's on the official page.  I take most stuff on there as being canon, 'cause the only way for it to get more canon is for it to be in the game, or in the books.  No one knows the character's backstory like the authors, right?

Aww, I like that story.  It could fit together with what Alistair tells you, because Alistair is speaking from his perspective.  He might think Duncan felt sorry for him and anyway he's surely not going to tell the Warden "I was of such character that Duncan chose me."  He would tell the story to make it seem self-deprecating.

Has anyone ever done the Blood Magic way in Redcliff whit hardened Alistair? Is it true that you can gain approval for sacrificing Isolde if he´s hardened?

Can you even do that? Alistair won't give you his personal quest before you went to Redcliffe. You would have to leave Redcliffe again at some point, go to Denerim, complete his quest, harden him, get his approval above 70 to reaffirm the personality change, go back to Redcliffe and sacrifice Isolde.

At what point can you leave again? You can let Redcliffe fall, of course. Can you leave after Redcliffe was saved, when you are supposed to go into the castle? Can you leave after agreeing to get the mages and then return and tell them you've changed your mind?

I've done it this way a few times when I wanted to harden Alistair without doing anything in Redcliffe -- just travel there, get the cutscene where he admits to being heir, and then once you arrive, don't talk to the guy on the bridge. Just turn around and leave. You trigger nothing and Alistair will follow up with his "let's find my sister" when you talk to him again. Key is to not cross the bridge.

I love this story too, and I am very much of the opinion that Duncan came specifically to recruit Alistair, tournament be damned.  Maybe an inability to fight would have stopped Duncan, but after seeing him do reasonably well and with such an upbeat attitude, I think Duncan would have had only one qualm about recruiting him - Alsitair surviving the Joining.

But I also suspect that Duncan knew an early death to the Joining would have been preferable to a lifetime spent in the Chantry, from Alistair's point of view.  But yeah, I think he was there as part of his promise to Fiona, to look out for her son.

I also thought it was interesting that the monastery he was sent to was in Redcliffe - I get the impression it was Eamon's way of keeping him as close as he could.

So Caislyn has had exactly 2 conversations with Alistair, and no gifts and poof we have that lovely "is something on your mind". What the heck, is it a mage thing?...lol I swear I never get there that fast on any other class.

I heard my husband's PC getting that.  He hasn't talked to Alistair since Lothering, left him unhardened, and plans to marry him to Anora and spare Loghain.  His PC is soooooo not worthy to hear that velvety morsel of goodness from Alistair's lips.  And his PC is a DEF, too.  Gives Dalish chicks a bad name.

Are you going to warn him that only a hardened Alistair will marry Anora when Logain is spared?

He actually isn't going to spare Loghain, he said this morning.  So poor Alistair is saddled with the worst possible fate you could dream up for him.

Actually, I felt the same way about the Dalish (it sucks, there's so little connection, why isn't the clan we're helping out our own, etc) but then I made a character I really liked and now I love playing a Dalish character. I don't love the Dalish origin, per se (I hate Tamlen), but I love the idea of being from a group of people outside of "regular" society struggling to find and preserve anything they can from their destroyed history. It sucks that BioWare didn't really develop it more but there is a lot of potential and lots of nice tidbits here and there.

You have to put Serissia's morph on him.  I was having a hard time thinking of him as my PC's lover, but now I totally feel it.  He's one of my favorite NPCs.  On my character's behalf I am so dreading what's coming.  :(:(:(

I wonder if we WERE supposed to help our own clan, because taking to Tamlen he says your supposed to be assisting master Varathorn, but looking around the camp there is no Mstr Varathorn, but he is in the Dalish camp for the treaty.

Oh, his looks don't bother me. Even if he were the most super sexy guy ever I wouldn't be able to make him my PC's lover. It's him that I don't like. I can deal with them being friends but other than that... no thanks.

They don't give you much to work with, it's true.  I realize they need to leave it open so the same stuff can be used regardless of PC gender and whether you RP it as platonic or not, but that is done so much better with Gorim.  It's why in my story I was writing Tamlen as holding back from Idun- in the origin when she tells him she came out to the woods to find him, he's glad but he also looks uneasy.  Plus I think it will be like a knife in the heart when in the shriek encounter he says "I always loved you," since he hadn't been able to tell her that before.

*choking up already*

Edit:  Oh, and re. accents, elves are definitely supposed to have an accent.  I'm not sure how I picture it.  Something Eastern European, I think.

I had no problem with it not being your clan at the treaty - as you tell Alistair at Lothering your own clan has moved on to the north, you have no idea where they are now.  It adds to the poignancy of the origin, for me, that you still don't get to see your clan and re-emphasizes that you have a new clan now, with the Grey Wardens.  Plus, you have the opportunity to know more about your own past through meeting Varathorn who knew your parents, and see a diferent aspect to the Dalish through the eyes of Zathrian and people like Sarel who are more overtly anti-shem than anyone in your own clan was.

I think it contributes to the feeling that while the Dalish are one, they're also a number of separate clans who are different from each other.  Plus, it always tugs at my heart when you can send your clan a message at the end of Nature of the Beast.  I love that part.  <3

At what point could you leave to do that? You could let Redcliffe fall, of course. Can you leave after Redcliffe was saved?

After the battle of Redcliff, you could leave to do the circle tower quest, then change your mind and come back and agree to the blood ritual. When they are discussing options, if you haven't doen the circle of mages quest, you need to leave Redcliff and leave Conner with the demon for the meantime. I guess you could just do the other quests until you have high enough approvl (which, with gifts, isn't hard) then go back and opt for blood magic anyway.

So it's possible but not a very intuitive way to play.

Edit: Maybe I'll find the answer in the toolset.

You can also leave as soon as you hear his confession about his birthright. I had Morrigan with me on my non mage and figured she sensed something demonic going on, so before we crossed the bridge (thats the point of no return) I got his quest, went to Denerim "for supplies" then to the circle and back.

Yes, I agree with this, and also that it shows you more about the nature of Dalish life.  You have obviously never been in Zathrian's clan yourself before that point, which emphasizes that really ALL you have known is your own clan.  You've not even been exposed to many other Dalish.

The more I think about it, the more I'm struck at what a really different existence it is from all the other NPCs you encounter.  Many of them don't have permanent homes, but they haven't lived a nomadic life, and that separates you as well as race.  I think I'm influenced by the fact that we're watching the TV show The Riches right now, which is about a family of Irish Travelers who try to settle down into a "buffer" (i.e. normal suburban) life.

My husband has been playing Dragon Age this week for the first time with a male Cousland. He didn't get along with any of the companions beside Leliana. He had Morrigan at hostile, Alistair was close to hostile and is still not nearly high enough to get his personal quest. He wanted to romance Leli but she is in the friend zone and he has no idea how to change that. Morrigan is at 19 approval now and he can kiss her but he has no idea why. He wanted to marry Anora but when she ratted him out to Cauthrien he changed his mind. I'm not sure if he ever talked to the other companions.

At least he listened to me concerning his choice of a ruler. He hates Loghain and wants to kill him as soon as he can. But he will put Anora on the throne because Alistair doesn't want to. (my prodding)

True, and I think I could even side with the werewolves against THAT clan, even on a Dalish now. But still, it sounds like they were going to be your clan and it was changed and a goof left in with "Aren't you supposed to be assisting Master Varathorn today?"

Heck, you can ask Hahren Paivel all surprised if there other Dalish clans in Ferelden, to which he will remind you that you met a few of them at the last Arlathvhen.  And that's WITH Zathrian's clan sharing the Brecilian Forest with your clan.  I thnk the Dalish PC has lived an extremely sheltered (or ignorant, depending on how you want to RP it) life.

lol sounds like my husband's playthrough when he was home for R&R. I think I drove him off the game though, I was fussing at him for not TALKING to his companions enough. He played it like a combat game and it annoyed me...lol

You could consider it a goof...or Varathorn also tells you though that your clan and Zathrian's were closer than most Dalish clans (either in relationship or in vicinity, I think you could go either way), so it's possible that you were supposed to be sent over to Zathrian's clan to do something with them instead of with your own.  Varathron also tells you that he knew your father well, so it seems like the two clans did indeed interact with each other at times.

Well, I tried to write Idun as somewhat educated, and you at least have seen other lands.  At least, I picture clans moving fairly freely in and out of Ferelden.  Because of her study of languages, she also would have been one of those who dealt with humans to trade.  However, personally, her experience of other people has been limited to that small group.  It's no accident they call them "walkers of the lonely path."  I picture her at the edge of camp a lot, or even making her own camp like Morrigan does.  It would have to be Alistair's charm and complete lack of guile and sense of social strata that breaks through to her.

Oh yeah, I didn't mean to imply academic ignorance - just that as far as their own people are concerned, the Dalish PC doesn't seem to know all that much about them other than the cultural and historical aspects.  They seem to have had very little exposure to social interaction amongst other clans.

I suddenly find myself only able to romance Alistair on characters that are basically shining example of good. Caislyn Amell and Kasha Cousland are the only two so far. Only problem is Caislyn lacks back story. I have played her past Lothering, but haven't gotten her RP past the tower.
