Well toughening Alitair up for when he's King will be for his own good, right? Even if you don't intend to crown him you are lead to believe you have no choice at that point in the game.
True, but how does she have such sage advice really. She's been in a gilded cage all her life. An excellent student, a good friend, prize pupil of the first enchanter. Books and spells and training have been her life. No knowledge of politics or anything else outside the tower. Since mages don't get to leave the tower until they reach senior mage. Every other Origin would teach you "everyone is out for themselves" but not so much the circle origin. I guess meeting Jowan again might be a trigger. She's wracked with guilt that she helped trap him, he doesn't care that she was only trying to protect him (She saw Lily as the bad guy), he doesn't care that she almost faced punishment if not for Duncan and Irving working together to get her away from Gregoir. He only cares about him?
Well Jowan and Lily had no plans to take her with them and so knew they might leave her holding the bad making them only out for themselves. Jowan lied to her and Lily about his blood magic and so his escape - without Lily because she refused to go but not even worrying about you - was him only being out for himself. Irving made you his pawn to catch Lily and didn't even try to help Jowan so he could pull one over on Greagoir making him only out for himself. Even Duncan had really suspiciously good timing showing up right when you were about to get condemned to recruit you acting like he wasn't surprised at all so maybe he knew and didn't warn you because he wanted a recruit making him only out for himself.
I'm really not sure how you could see Lily as the bad guy, though. They're running away to escae Jowan's fate, Jowan's phylactory is why she can't just leave (I do wonder how they planned to escape once the phylactory is destroyed), and she was clearly under the impression he wasn't a blood mage. She was just as much a victim as you were.
Jowan wouldn't have known if she hadn't found the information. SHe started the ball rolling.
And I can't go with Irving and Duncan. It's very clear that when you agree to help him, your reward is joining the grey wardens. Duncan already has heard about you when you first meet him, he even basically interviews you both in his quarters and in the library. His decision is pretty much made before you enter the basement. Irving tells you by helping him catch Lily you will be rewarded well. That's exactly why Duncan shows up when he does. I think partly Irving knows he's put you in a bad spot, and that Gregoir will never stop gunning for you too, but thats just a guess.
Caislyn knew the plan, and agreed that Lily was just as culpable as Jowan, and in fact if she hadn't read those documents and ran to Jowan, this plan would not have taken shape. But she also knew Lily would get away with it, assumed that she was "enthralled" and Jowan would still suffer Tranquility.
That pretty much leaves Jowan, and his lying to her about being a blood mage, knowing she wouldn't help if she'd known the truth.
They do actually tell you that you can escape with them, even though your phylactery was sent to Denerim. And that you're clever and talented enough to take your phylactery from your hunter. Found that out on Jaina since she went the other way with the origin. I suspect Irving was also responsible for Duncan's timing that way too. He already knew Jowan and Lily were up to something, and Duncan admires your loyalty to a friend.
