Yes, in TST the lead guy who talks to Maric and Loghain says that they all speak the king's tongue, but only the ones who deal with the human traders do so fluently, and among themselves they use the old language.yukidama wrote...
I have a question. Do the Dalish speak elvish or what? In TST there is a reference to them speaking a different language, but I can't exactly remember. It seems to me that elvish in general is so fragmented even for the Dalish, but could they be speaking it as a mother tongue since not all of them speak the King's language? My memory sucks, so I could just be remembering incorrectly.

That seems to conflict with the game's presentation of it. In game, they only speak a little bit, throwing words into conversation because it's all they've recovered so far.

I can't really see the chantry letting mages get their hands on weapons on top of magical training, to be honest.
I'm not suggesting they can carry them around the tower. Just that they can be taught, under templar control, as a daily training session. Kinda like they do when they do weapons training with soldiers. They sign out the weapons, us them under strict supervision, and are required to turn them back in, and sign them in afterwards.
Oh, I wasn't talking about walking around with weapons or anything, but that the chantry and templars would train them in fighting ability. It'd make controlling them that much more difficult, especially if they escape. It'd be like giving guns to your enemy when they already have bombs that can obliterate you, in my opinion.

Yes, I suspect they speak Elvish as much as possible amongst themselves, resorting to the King's tongue only when necessary - like when they don't have a word for something in their own language. They all can speak King's tongue to one degree or another (and I wouldn't be surprised if that extends to Orlesian and Antivan, depending on how well-travelled the particular clan is) but they choose not to, as much as possible.

Ah. I was wondering, because looking at the wikia it says:
"The Elvish of the Dragon Age is thus a fragmented remnant, a few words
that are thrown into conversation rather than a working language used to
conduct everyday life. The Dalish Elves, self-appointed custodians of the
elven language and lore, use more Elvish than their City Elf brethren."
I assume in the game they speak the King's tongue because the characters wouldn't understand the Dalish otherwise (and they didn't want to invent a whole new language). It would have been nice if they could have made some sort of indication, or give the Dalish unique accents while the City Elves retain the accent of their country of origin. Probably would have been too much of an effort <_<
EDIT: Like LadyD, I also got the impression from the game that they only had bits and piecesof their language, so they just incorporated that into their vocabulary. That they didn't have enough recovered in order to have a full, working language to communicate in.

The whole advantage the templars have is that they can neutralize magic and take mages down in melee combat... you really think they would be eager to teach mages to fight with weapons and armor? Really?Lady Jess wrote...

I'm not talking EVERY mage in the tower. It's not so omgimpossibl that SOME mages can be taught the Arcane Warrior specialization, IN the tower under strict supervision. One or two mages is not going to slaughter a squad of templars and escape, in a controlled training environment. seriously, templars still have the power here.
Mage: ohh I have weapons RAWR
Templar: Holy Smite!
Mage: stunned
Templar: ...ok tie her up, and throw her in the dungeon

Are there any poets in here? I'm thinking about writing a poem and I have little to no experience in writing poetry. How do you come up with the first line or get inspiration?

The only poem I've really read and remember is a Lovecraft thing.
That is not dead which can eternal lie,
yet with stranger aeons,
even Death may die.
Fun, fun, fun.

I'm fond of the filthy Victorians' variation:
There was a young man from Peru,
Who had nothing whatever to do;
So he took out his carrot
And he buggered his parrot,
And sent the result to the zoo.

But why would Templars condone/support training that could make things more complicated for themselves down the road? What benefit would they get from something like that? It doesn't make much sense to make the mages -more- dangerous for them to control.Lady Jess wrote...

It's not the only way that the book elves are different. I like the book presentation better, even as sketchy as it is. But yes, they are definitely speaking a different language since the book also talks about them babbling to each other as they capture Maric and Loghain and the lead guy turns to give orders and switches into the old language. The game could have at least given them an accent, but I guess they decided not to bother and didn't for the dwarves, either. Probably harder to get uniform, quality voice acting.LadyDamodred wrote...

I can't bring myself to romance two characters intentionally at the same time. I'd pick Morrigan.

How is it more dangerous than entropy, spirit schools, primal schools? Again, these are not hundreds of mages flouncing about the tower carrying weapons full time.
Training Sessions, CONTROLLED environment (where Templars would outnumber students at least 2 to one), select students, and again...I repeat no weapons outside the training session. The templars still have all of the control they had before. They can cleanse the buffs that increase weapon damage, and stun the mages with holy smite...nothing changtes.
I can't explain it any more simply, I just quit even remotely trying to mention how I rp a situation.

Did you pick the "tie her to a flagpole and tickle her" line? I love that onesylvanaerie wrote...
I didnt intend to romance Morrigan she just got interested in me after I asked about her shapeshifting powers and how she grew up...I don't know how it happened. At least I know how to avoide Leliana's triggers.
