I also hope that the numbers he uses vis a vis the military are incorrect or subject to reinterpretations.

Because Loghain crushing twoi legions of chevaliers in the battle of the River Dane with only 1000 barely trained men with little equipment can have only two conclusions:
- Either Loghain is much more brilliant than everyone, including me, thought.
- Or two legions of Chevaliers aren't a big number, and the Battle of the River Dane that was described as the most decisive victory was barely a battle to begin with.

Yea I wondered about that, too. In Rome, a legion used to be 6000 men, that means he would have won against 12000. That´s better than even Robert the Bruce!

On the other hand, I should think a Legion in Thedas is just a lot smaller, maybe around 500 - 1000 men?

And I wouldn´t say 1000 men on each side are a small battle in that times. After all, Denerim has only a few thousand inhabitants, and besides of that there are barely any towns worth mentioning....

There was info somewhere of Denerim having 50k people, Highever, 20k, Gwaren 10k, etc...  I will have to hunt for it later.

And yeah, we don't know how big a legion is.  Numbers vary wildly depending on the source.  But historically, battle were fought with fairly small numbers of troops.

I would assume that a legion of chevaliers is about 800 - 1000 men. Loghain defeating an army twice the size of his sounds impressive and decisive enough without it being unlikely. Thsoe two legiosn afterall were sent to reinforce Orlesian hold in Ferelden, so it shoudl have been a large army by their standarts.

EDIT: And Denerim only 50K people? Sigh, that's very low.

Ancient Carthage has about 300K. And Baghdad in the Middle Ages had about 500 to 800K.

That makes sense to me.  Plus, heavy calvalry is expensive.  While the chevaliers are elite troops, I can't see them haviing huge numbers of them.

Heh, I'm 22 xD It just feels that as I get older I realize just how little I know. Who am I to judge, especially when I have no understanding of what the other person is going through? I may not want to live that way personally, but it shouldn't invalidate the experience of those who do.

Also remember, that each of those bastards goes around raping and killing people LEGALLY. Even Orlaisians wouldn´t want to have too many of those around, right?

From the population numbers given, most of the people live in teh countryside and not in cities.  50k is less than what Boston had at the start of the revolutionary war.  The number isn't bad.  It makes sense.

Well both Carthage and the muslim empire were rightfully considered highly evolved cultures. Ferelden is commonly regarded as quite barbarian. For a barbarian country 50000 people in one city IS impressive. I would have expected it to be much less.

You know, yes it makes sense. I guess it depends on the type of society we are talkign about.
The Carthaginian Empire was heavily centralised on Carthage. And the Abassid Caliphate was centralised in Baghdad and the civilisation was relatively urbanised compared to feudal Europe (likewise, Cordoba in the Umayyad Caliphate in Spain had at least 300K).

Yea, Baghdad was considered the capital of the world back then. Tragic what happened to it.

But yea I guess you are right. It makes sense in Ferelden context.

I'd have to check to make sure but if i remember right that's basically as far as the head can tilt in that position and direction (maybe few more degrees) so the support isn't really needed there Posted Image  Now, if his neck was say, snapped... then it'd be another story, but that'd be getting the morbidness quite beyond the necessary.
