Do I even want to know?Did you?Excerpt from first chapter...
No matter what, he was a Cousland. He needed to make sure that Arl Howe didn't have plans to take over Castle Cousland. Or something like that.
Horace wasn't blind. He'd noticed the way that the arl just scowled and mocked his father lately, yet he had no idea what had caused it. All he knew was that Howe's relationship with Father had gotten strained over the past year.
He could hear noises by the door. It sounded like Arl Howe and Father. Great, they were putting Horace didn't know what they were saying, but it bothered him to hear whispers in front of his door. He knew. This was just like when Grandpa Hector had rapped at the door, whispered phrases into his ears, told him that he was wonderful. Horace hated his grandfather; Hector Cousland had been obsessed with him, due to Horace being his "genetic throwback" of sorts.
"Rendon, I can't allow you to do this." Whatever Father and Howe were doing, it must be something illegal. Either that, or Howe had some blackmail on Father.
"Come on, Bryce. I want you. I need you. Give yourself to me."
Oh, this was one of the oddest things he had ever heard; he had not known that Arl Howe liked men. He had also not known that his father would break marital vows in order to be with another man. Perhaps he didn't know Father as well as he thought. Horace walked to the door, kneeling by it in order to hear what was happening.
He had experience with listening in on conversations that he wasn't meant to hear over the years; knowing that he'd have to deal with Howe and Father when he got up was nothing unusual. He'd heard them say some crazy things over the years, but never quite put it in context. Perhaps this was why.
