LOL.
I hate Tamlen so, so much.
I do, too. When I got to the mirror, I really wished Ron could say something like "You know, if I were a City Elf, I'd have a kick-ass cousin who'd help me storm a freaking nobleman's estate. But you go ahead and try your luck with that Obviously Evil Mirror. I'll just twirl my thumbs and wait for Duncan to liven things up."
SERIOUSLY. Hahaha. As a female Dalish when I first saw there was a 'romance' option I just laughed my ass off and said no damn way.

I love Tamlen. My Mahariel pretty much had her heart broken by him, poor girl. I tried to romance Alistair but it could not work in my head. I got some vague personal culture association with the Dalish, and I find it difficult to see how an "outsider" would get a Dalish, no matter how woobierific he is.

You guys are really making me want to start a Dalish...Iv'e never done that origin before. I hate to start a new PC until I've finished the one I've been playing...but I may make an exception. Is the Dalish origin good?

I like Tamlen! Even unmorphed. Lyra loved him, or at least thought she did, and thought they'd alwats be together.

It seems to be a really hit or miss origin. People either love it, or they hate it. I haven't met many if any people who are inbetween. I can't get enough of it - done it at least 6 or 7 times for research purposes and I love it every time. Others have a lot of trouble getting through it once.
I am Dalish to the core though. <3

Yay! I didn't really like like Tamlen until I wrote about him. I used hooks from the origin story, but I guess I made him how I wanted him to be, adding to that Serissia's nice morph.Kryyptehk wrote...

It also helps that in my conception, he was so persistent about the mirror because he was Idun's little arcane treasure hunter. He was just trying to be a good betrothed.

And I have some vague personal association with the elves in the game too, but I don't really see why it should limit my Dalish character's romance options... Who you fall in love with isn't always necessarily a logical thing.

The reason I thought of was much the same, but it was because he wanted to be a good hunter so that he could make life easier for him and his betrothed.

I personally don't care much for the Dalish origin as much as I like playing Dalish throughout the whole game. Then again, I don't like the main NPC so... yeah.

It definitely helps to have a story in mind for a Dalish. Once you finish the beginning you have to fill in the blanks yourself. There's not alot past that point.

I was thinking about it and it seems to me that the only LI who is a natural fit with a Dalish PC is Morrigan. Even Zevran is a "flat ear." Other than talking about his wistfulness about his mother, he's a bit condescending and that's just about how my Dalish characters feel about him at first. Then of course there's Leliana the friendly bigot. Alistair is clueless enough to be happily accepting of your background, he's honorable and since the Dalish PC is descended from Arlathan nobility, I usually play them with some dignity and nobility to them, so after they work through their initial skepticism, it doesn't seem too hard to me. It's trickier with my current PC because she's also an apostate.

I know a lot of people take comfort in the 'oh, you can't help you fall in love with and it's not logical' but I'm not that much of a romantic so I hate that line of thought.
Edit: I mean, why would people see that as a good thing anyway? I've never gotten that. To me, it makes it seem like you're a slave to your emotions and that's not a good thing.

I have a problem with the Dalish origin because there is nobody in it that I like. It's basically 30 minutes of being a bit annoyed at everyone and then feeling weird that I'm supposed to be sad that I'm leaving my clan. It fails (for me) from an rp perspective because it can't make me connect with the people or the culture the way the other origins do.
This. I felt rushed because everyone was like "OMG, don't talk to me! Go get Tamlen!". I mean, it makes sense why they would do that, but I lost a lot of lore and stuff on my first run because I wanted it to go right.

Maybe if you write about it. I know that's what did it for me. I liked playing Dalish PCs before because of the RP experience throughout the game, but I agree you don't feel very connected to your clan just from the origin. Mage origin was much more blah, however.SurelyForth wrote...

Yeah, I think my fondness for the origin comes from backstory - I talk to everyone to get the history and lore but I do have to RP it as most of those conversations taking place before the origin - even if you're just friends you wouldn't sit around talking about the fall of the Dales or Arlathan while Tamlen's missing. >.>

Seconnnnnnnnnded so hard here. My male Mahariel loved Morrigan, she really got that lifestyle I think.
At the risk of oversharing on the interbutts, my culture is outsiders=bad. Dalish resonates with in the sense of lost culture and a secretive people, and distrust of a man who embodies everything that you were brought up to hate? Yeah, that's a lot of issues to break down over the space of trying to end a Blight at the same time.

I don't really see it as much as that as seeing a person for themselves and not only their ancestry/appearance/culture. Especially in a situation where you've been separated from yours and are living on the fringes. I don't think it is strange to find solace in the company of another who treats you kindly and respects you no matter where you are from or what you are.

You can def play it that way. I take my cues from the Dalish guy (I love that guy!) in Stolen Throne who is pretty friendly and confident with Loghain and Maric, though he's not taking any guff. He says that the Dalish who deal with human traders are fluent in the king's tongue, and I figure they would be fairly aware of shemlen culture as well. And then they give you a little hint that your dad was a progressive type who thought the Dalish should be more involved in human society. Nothing says you have to take after the old man, of course.soignee wrote...

She seems him as clan and yet still different, as he's human. But the fact that he is kind and gentle with a good heart does make an impression on her, as does his appreciation for her culture (that line about how beautiful the Dalish burial custom is really gets to her) and how he doesn't expect her to change at all.
And eventually, since she isn't just Dalish anymore, she comes to accept that maybe she can have a romance that isn't quite Dalish either, and he is clan, at least.
ETA: Ahh, ToP, someone give me more Alistair to snuggle with!
