Uh, given enough cross-breeding, yes, all my traits would disappear. Not to mention that I'm American, so I don't really have a culture. So if I married someone who wasn't an American caucasian then after a few generations, my genes would completely disappear.

Elves don't have much of a culture and their genes are recessive. It's similar enough.

Your (see you, not your "race") traits disappear at the same rate no matter whom you mate with. The comparison isn't valid.

I like how you put quotations around race, like sense I'm caucasian I'm not a race. Obviously.

Right, this thread is not so fun anymore with Sarah having a panic attack and people devolving into arguments. Not so fun. See you guys later.

I put race into quotation marks since some take offence at it. Wouldn't know why. I really don't know why you'd think I differentiate between people in that way, but I guess that tells more about you than me.

The amount of your genes decreases approximately by half per generation. Unless you indulge in incest that is, but that would not be good in the long run.

Heh, I am not really taking it personally at all. I just think that it's not realistic at all to think people would give up their lovers and forgo their sexual orientation or lack of desire to have children because the race could potentially die out a millennium later.

And because I am so snotty,

You don't think it's a bit rude to trivialize someone's concerns about the elven race as a whole going extinct by making snide comments about how Alistair is single-handedly destroying the elf race?

And I'm not saying it's realistic to expect inherently selfish people to give up their human lovers but that doesn't mean that the problem of the elven extinction is going to go away.

Sarah I think Yuki is responding in kind since you keep saying the PC is selfish to be with her human lover instead of finding some elf to have babies with (that may not get born anyway) Perhaps you should choose a different less inflammatory word to describe it.  Love might be selfish in that the heart wants what the heart wants, that doesn't make those people selfish it makes them well..."human"

and to whitewash it saying that dwarves and humans who romance zevran shouldn't be concerned about his race is the same argument in reverse, they are being "selfish" for denying his race the chance to survive by tying up his affections.

I say let it go and not worry overmuch about a game issue that won't see fruition for centuries (if ever) I don't see the Dalish clans mingling with humans much anyway even if all the elves in Alienages do.  I don't feel as a player your concerns are going to affect the elven race that much.  They aren't all suddenly going to jump on the human bandwagon just because the PC might be.

But I've already said that I'm NOT talking about the PC. And the definition of selfish is "the precedence given in thought or deed to the self, i.e., self interest or self concern. It is the act of placing one's own needs or desires above the needs or desires of others." Having human children (note that this doesn't even apply to the elf warden/Alistair) instead of having elf children for the good of the elf species is putting your wants/desires above the wants/desires of the elves as a whole and that is the definition of selfish. Selfish doesn't have to necessarily be bad or unreasonable. It is jut putting yourself first.

Umm considering its a game and I don't really care about the survival of the elven race (which is a non issue IN the game itself) and the ONLY way I can affect things in the game is WITH my PC...do you see the way this is going? Arguing with us over what Joe Blow the elf does in the game as opposed to our Mahariel is pointless. Now if you want to argue that we are contributing to the demise of the elven race by romancing (Morrigan/Leliana/Alistair) then you have a point.  I have no control over what NPC #6 does and frankly unless hes coming at my PC with spells ablazin' or a huge pointy stick I don't really care what he does behind closed doors.

They did not survive because they were hated and persecuted. They did so despite these hardships. Yes, sticking together was large factor which helped them , but it worked as reaction to threat rather than basic requirement no matter the circumstances.

The elves are faced with similar circumstances and right now they need to focus on the group and not really opening up to humans. They are culturally too weak to do so right now, while the Jews still had their religion, most of their culture...etc.

I guess we just see it different -- to me, while the separation creates reasonable means of preservation, at the same time it also contributes to the very problem which caused the separation in the first place. It's self-reinforcing issue and as such not good for the elves in the long run unless they dare to break this cycle -- yes, they are weak but they aren't going to become any stronger if they stay confined and denied anything but most basic rights out of popular perception they are second-class beings, inferior to humans.

To put it differently -- just breeding isn't really any good nor solves anything if you then can't afford to feed your children and/or support them till they grow up and reach maturity. And without changing human mindsets they will stay poor, at best.

Because there are more things contributing to the decline of the elves than breeding with humans.

I was actually just commenting on how the elf race is doomed and given how OT this thread can get at least that was still about the game. There aren't any easy answers about that and the only reason it turned into an argument (besides some confusion about whether this was about the PC/Alistair or not) was because it's uncertain just how common human/elf pairings are - and there must be more than just the ones you specifically hear about - and whether or not anything could/should be done to prevent this.

Edit: One of these days I will learn how to not accidentally start arguments on this thread...Posted Image

Of course, I wasn't arguing against that. I am not suggesting they ought to hate humans or take up arms, that would be self destrcutive.

But when it comes to culture and reproduction, I think they ought to remain strongly united and enclosedf in their communities to the extent that it would allow them to both thrive and survive.

But as interesting as the discussion is, I think it went on too much.
Still it was interesting and thanks to everyone for being civil Posted Image

Yup, funny but the hair with bangs seems to have this effect. Especially with the ponytail. When i put it on my CE while testing earlier it was like "whoa, she totally went from her '16 tops' to 'at least 17, maybe even 18' there" Posted Image

So she is finally able to be old enough to be a warden?

by the way are you going to make more hairstyles?

Well, Duncan indeed thought she was old enough to get conscripted, even with the usual hair Posted Image

And aye, got a few ponytail things done today for the heck of it:

they need some cleaning up and to be converted for the humans and dwarves too, first.

Actually, if anyone has an idea for a mix-and-match of existing hair bits into something that would be interesting, let me know. No promises but may always give it a shot </alistair> Posted Image

That's Owen.

And well...I love cats! Posted Image

Though seeing that the stereotypical Bond villain likes cats too, I am not sure that's such a good sign.

Oh my lord, I love you. If you could do a plain short hairstyle with Morrigan style bangs, you would be my hero (again) foreverty ever. Are ya also gonna make the pigtails on the bottom right without the piecey bits?

*sigh* I love em but I can't do Chargens and I already love the one parted in the middle tucked hairstyle I use for my elf mage.

Sigh TOP I really need to upload some more stuff. Okay soemthing for everyone, Alistair and Morrigan fans I don't have much with both of them in it.  Morrigan just looks so freaking amused by the boys.
