Yeah, the mistress label does not even enter my mind. I don't understand the attitude that you've gone from a legendary warden to a tart on the side if Alistair becomes king and keeps his relationship with you. It would make sense if Anora was staying in the picture, but other than that, it just means your boyfriend landed a very cushy job, nothing more. =p
Exactly! And if we must speculate on the future, the title of mistress in the general time frame of the game did not have a stigma like it does now. If people are going to USE the term, IF Alistair gets married, then it's only fair that it is looked at in THAT time period without current day's stigma attached. They were very common among heir-minded nobilty and arranged marriages, and in many cases supported encouraged BY the wife, who only tolerated sex to produce an heir to start with.
Nobility was put together like breeding thoroughbreds back then, love was something you found outside, and it was accepted.
Were nobles each other's mistress ? Like would, say, a duchess or the sister of a duke (depending on if you take Gwaren or just are Fergus' sister) or a foreign princess be the mistress of a King?
A foreign princess would most likely be set up in an advantageous marriage, although there were probably times when the most advantageous situation was that of a mistress for a younger sister.
For nobility, I would hazard that they were both married to other people, and then kept the affair going between themselves. Nobility didn't usually have the luxury of marrying for love, or not marrying at all. They needed to keep the titles, land, money and political connections that marriage brought. Edit: Although sometimes the most advantageous tie was again, to be mistress to someone powerful.
Edit: In terms of DAO, Fereldan seems like it would want to keep the blood lines within its own country, and probably wouldn't be sending for Antivan or Orlesian nobles. I'd guess they'd want Alistair to marry a noble of Fereldan.
