You can still use the exact hair color when you edit the .mor file. I find that the only time this doesn't work is with a specific mod that starts with CC (not sure which one that is) -- it's the one with all the crazy colors like pink, blue, green hair. Ok found it! If you use a non-default colour the name of the stubble in the .mor and the .mop gets mutated. If I replace that with the name of some default stubble that comes close to the non-default colour I wanna use then the problem is gone! Thanks tmptmp wrote...
It has something to do with how the toolset automatically generates name for the hair root colour (stubble) file from the base hair colour file. It can be fixed by editing that value manually in the .mor file with the Toolset.
