Hardened Alistair is easier to convince to do something morally ambiguous, but he still argues against it, still wants a good reason why, and still gives you sad-disgusted-face.
I don't think it has to be traumatic, but the sense of impending doom of one sort or another is very much over those darkened hallways of Eamon's. Ritual aside, you're facing the final battle and not likely to come out alive. The ritual is a desperate gambit, but one way or another, you are probably going to lose each other in the coming days.
Personally I find the scene more jarring if you don't agree to the DR. Alistair yawning and saying "well, time to turn in" is appropriate for a male Warden or a friend PC, but not his lover.
