When I had my daughter I went into labour on the Thursday and had her on the Monday by forceps.
Ok so that sounds bad - but the reason it took so long was that I was in no pain - none at all.
The hospital staff wouldn't believe I was actually in labour.
By the time they realised on the Monday morning her heart was failing and she had to be removed ASAP.
I had her with no drugs of any sort - except for the anaesthetic because of the forceps.
I think for some people (and I don't think for a second that most women are in a lot of pain) that the fear they have from all the stories might make the whole experience worse because they are stressed out of their minds.
My daughter was born on the same day as her aunt (2 years later) with about 30 seconds in the time difference.
Its funny having them on the same day.
