This would mean your Warden would have to be voiced in a future game.Kryyptehk wrote...
Y'know, I'm hoping that the Hawke storyline is just leading into a better storyline for our characters. Like, something has to happen that you can't have a choice on, so it's more acceptable for them to use Hawke rather than our original characters....or something. I'm ever the optimistic lol
That's what really is in my craw, the voiced PC and forcing DA2 to be a Mass Effect clone. Reading the dev comments from the Game Informer article about how boring and decrepit Origins supposedly is infuriates me. They're out trashing their own product and comparing it unfavorably to a game I find unplayable.

I don't see why the Warden would have to be voiced in any other games they're in. Though after one game of voiced PCs, they probably would go that route.
It surprises me that the devs hate DA so much. I'm starting to wonder if DA was just a side project, in the shadows of ME. That's kind of sad, seeing as how DA is better than ME, and this is coming from a person who genuinely liked ME.

I'm no big fan of having a voiced PC but to be honest, I don't think that just by being voiced Hawke will be JUST like Shepard. I think there may be a bit more freedom in what direction you want to take Hawke than with Shepard.
Considering the conversation wheel they are supposedly going to have, I'm hopeful that is won't be as bad as Meer's voice acting. I liked Hale's voice, but Meer was just awful.

Gaider did say in the DA2 forum that there was no reason they would always do it the same way, but the devs in the GI interview seem pretty convinced that "old school" is dead and that it was a mistake to make DAO the way they did.Kryyptehk wrote...

I agree with you about the VO thing. The first person perspective was what I liked best about Origins. Unless they somehow intend to try to pull off a first person perspective with VOs, of which I am highly skeptical.

Is that what they're doing? I don't have GI. It makes sense, in a way, they want to promote their new product, and they need to present whatever they have as an improvement. Is it the tone that harsh?Addai67 wrote...

That's what the writers are saying, but does it matter? Did any of us like the voice sets in DAO as it is? Now we're going to be saddled with Hawke's voice for the whole game whether we like it or not.yukidama wrote...

Is Origins really "old school"? I didn't get that impression. I just thought it was more first-person, like The Elder Scrolls and Fallout... are those old school, and I don't realize it?

Maybe this is the initial marketing push to try to get the people who play games just to kill things and have pixel sex to give DA a look, and they're counting on the character trailers etc. to hook the rest of us. I suppose it could work.

*shrug* I guess I just don't think it is the end of the world. I play mainly JRPGs so I guess I have grown accustomed to playing main characters with voices I don't like. I haven't heard Hawke's voices yet so I have no clue if I'll hate it or not. I just don't think that having a voiced PC is the end of the world, even if it's not my first choice.

Me too. With my fem!Shep, her voice fit her perfectly, it was awesome. But then I made a Sheploo (named John and with the default face lol) and couldn't play him. He's just so monotone. I keep expecting him to try and sell my eyedrops.

The first time I played through Origins I didn't know anything about mods or the Toolset. Once I learned how to download and install mods I installed the mod Silent PC.
I'm playing The Witcher Enhanced Edition Director's Cut now and Geralt's voice actor is fantastic. It suits the game having Geralt voiced because in that scenario I'm not playing my character I'm playing Geralt. That's the fundamental problem I see w/ DA2. That's why I see it as just another action rpg clone. What made Origins fantastic was the fact I could really make the characters mine.

Exactly. It's not that voiced PC's can't tell good stories, and that the games aren't good. But I find the first person games to be more fun because the adventure is mine, not the predefined character's.

So I read the article and the reaction we got in between the quotes served to frame it in a much more negative light then the article is on its own. It really doesn't seem that bad. They've likely heard all the complaints about Shepard in ME1 and fixed several of them for ME2 and will likely fix the complaints for that for DA2. Having a voiced protagonist isn'st going to turn the game into ME and I don't see why having three silent dialogue options gives you more freedom than three voiced dialogue options. Sure you can RP how they're phrased but based on how everyone reacts it's a pretty big indicator if you were being sarcastic/aggressive/earnest/whatever.

Just seeing the devs say that they want to make DA2 into Mass Effect is enough to kill any buzz I might have had about the new game. It cements the fears I had from Awakening and the DLCs that they were moving away, inexplicably, from what I liked best about DAO.Sarah1281 wrote...

I mean, you said yourself that you couldn't finish an ME playthrough because of the voice, so that rather restricts your freedom, doesn't it? You're forced into a persona and have to take it or leave it. The dialogue wheel also means you're not even really choosing what your PC is going to say. You're just suggesting a general tone and a vague reference to how you want to respond.
It's also a really big change to say that they no longer see DA as a spiritual successor to old-style RPG. That's not a minor tweak, it's a major change in how they view the franchise.

Idk, maybe I'm just weird. I just don't feel like voiced over characters are mine. It feels like I'm being throw into the role of x; like in The Witcher I'm playing Geralt. Is it fun? Yeah, I'm having a blast. It doesn't feel like my character though. It's more like watching an interactive movie.
You should read the Morrigan thread, you'll find many people who think exactly the same thing.
