The term is used loosely. Basically, without the Warden, the world was DOOOMED, and hence the sun shines out of the Hero of Ferelden's behind etc.
How? Historically speaking, many victories and great achievements were based virtually on one man and a handful of followers. Why does that necessarily have to make them a Mary Sue? Just because the DLC showed that Alistair couldn't do it?
It depends on how that character is RPed. Not the achievement in and of itself, which is not as Mary Suish as you'd think. You had an army with you, and strong NPC alies like Eamon, Bhelen / Harrowmont, Irving / Gregoir, Riordan...etc. And while our PCs had a lot of choices and power, they couldn't do whatever they want.
I have no problem thinking that Ferelden (not the world) would probably have been doomed without the Warden. And I have no problem saying that, without having a Mary Sue character.
I would emphasize that you have a team, yet the game treats it as if you personally ended the Blight. If we treat DSC seriously (which is a fallacious thing to do, but since we're doing it, I'll continue the exercise), the same team can be present and it all goes pear-shaped because one person wasn't at the final battle.
Ok, so I really probably shouldn't get into this discussion, but I shall anyway.
You could choose to look at it as though it wasn't going pear shaped because of the lack of one person ( the warden) because of the person, but maybe being the
only grey warden, and the only survivor of ostagar really messed with Alistair's head. None of his other companions would have known duncan for example, so the chances of them asking if he wanted to talk about his loss would be slim. Even if they did ask later, he'd have spent the entire journey to Lothering with Morrigan berating him for his sorrow. I'd imagine that could have a detrimental effect on the poor boy.
Also it wasn't
really the same team, as far as I can tell Wynne never joined the wardens, instead journeying from the circle to help fight in the battle, so her relationship with Alistair in which she acts as a sort of mother/grandmother figure never happened. You can apply that to all the companions who aren't on the roof as I
think the codex implies they just happened to find their way to the battle through various chains of events.
So basically , Alistair couldn't do it (lead and kill the archdemon) when his companions were Leliana ( thinks she had a vision from the Maker), Morrigan (despises Alistair) and a dog.( err... a dog). I can believe that.
Edit: Bah! Sarah beat me to it and used much less words.
