Hey on the topic of Warden Mary sues...I think by definition they are mary sues. Really. Several dozen of them almost killed thousands, they're made special, super special. Incidentally Alisair has bad choiced up his army making it very strong, so



Hm, the patch? I knew the Leliana and Zevran ones existed before, but I don't know about Alistair.

Im not installing this patch until I hear it is stable....so far there seem to be quite some problems in the patch-thread....

I know I'm jumping in on an already well-established discussion, but I just wanted to give a squish to my own Alistair (meaning Alistair as he's developed in my particular playthrough). I didn't make him become king because he really really really didn't want to do it and all he wanted to do was hack Darkspawn with me, so that's what we're doing. I never hardened him --this is my first playthrough so I wasn't aware of that possibility and I'm not sure I would have done it anyway even if I'd known-- so he's pretty much kept his boyishness and only "matured" through his experiences in battle, and through his observation of and conversations with my Warden and, IMO, Wynne (I put them in the same party a lot; their "backseat" conversations in Return to Ostagar were particularly touching). Well, last night we reached the point where the army sets out for the final battle and I have to say, while this version of Alistair would not have done well as king (and would not have enjoyed having his strings pulled by Anora if made to marry her), he did me proud as a Warden Commander/General in the muster/rally/speech scenes. I was pleasantly surprised; it was enough of a character change to be impressive but not so much that you got the feeling the developers just put the king-Alistair's behavior in there regardless of whether his character was king or not.



For the record, I've done this playthrough extra-righteous --not really a Mary-Sue type IMO because I have had to make some cold-blooded decisions and do some less than nice things in the name of righteousness-- and while I may choose in future playthroughs to loosen up a bit on my character's morals, I feel right about going into the final battle with Alistair like this. I had been worried about the whole Alistair becoming king thing --reading hints here and there but trying to avoid spoilers-- because he didn't want to do it and I didn't want him to do it especially if it meant marrying Anora (my Warden is a Dwarf so most likely he would have had to break up with her) --and I had also heard rumors about the deal with Morrigan but didn't know if I would be able to avoid it. Well, I have done. For better or worse it's just me and my fellow Warden --now my commander-- heading off into the sunset together, as it were; and for once I feel as if we're equals in bad-assedness.

But he doesn't make a cameo if he's a Grey Warden & not King, so then there's just... nothing! *sob*

Only if he's king! The game basically ignores Warden Alistair, which is messed up since it's pretty much the only way for a non-HNF to get a halfway happy ending with him that doesn't involve being his mistress.

Okay, it's kind of ridiculous if you're going to claim that the entire order is an order of Mary Sues. People really do overuse the term.

Well for the rest of us, no ending we choose will let Morri/Leli/Zev show up at the keep. 

Anyway, Alistair being king always seemed like it would be canonized to me.  That or bum Alistair.  Warden Alistair is so... anticlimactic.

it's like if a character is the main character, they are a mary sue no matter what.

I get that things are much worse for those who had other love interests, or didn't make Alistair king, but I still would have liked a letter just saying that he wouldn't make it back after all. Since he says he'll come back as soon as he can, I spent the entire game expecting him to show up. It was kind of crushing. Although since that pretty much describes the whole ugly experience for my warden, I suppose it works. Still, a 'Sorry, hun, not going to be able to get away from work, you're on your own' letter would have been a nice addition to roleplay.

So, where are these letters in the game data?

Exactly, which is why it's kinda wrong to call Hawke a Mary Sue at this point. You can dislike Hawke, but calling them a Mary Sue/Gary Stu just because you dislike the direction the game is headed? Seems premature.

The guy with the most valid reasons to stay around, rebuilding the order he is so fond of, just disappears... With no mention at all as for why... 

I hope DA2 won't give me reasons to be sorry I make him king in all my games since Awakening...

Oh that's simple enough. Go to your C:\\Program Files\\Steam\\steamapps\\common\\dragon age origins\\\\bin_ship folder (or wherever you have Steam installed) and look for the DAOriginsConfig.exe file. Open it, go to the "game" section and there you can you verify which version of the game you have. It should be DAOrigins.exe: 1.04.

This is where I mention my plan to write a story about Awakening Alistair where he's actually at the Vigil, but always occupied someplace else doing possibly lifechanging but pointless stuff that has nothing to do with the main story. It would be like The Zeppo. Every day would end with him and the PC having a variation of this conversation after sex:

PC: So, what did you do today?
Alistair: Oh, not much. I met this elven mage named Fiona? And she, uh, said she might be my mother.
PC: That's nice. Did I tell you  about how we were accosted by more assassins on our way home from Dragon Dome? Maker, sometimes I hate my life.

Yeah, I ran ( perhaps rushed)  through my first, and only full awakenings playthrough thinking, ooh I wonder when Alistair will come back. Then I had a  'WTF, it's finished? ' moment. 

Yep, I did the same thing. None of those other people would talk, so my poor PC was horribly lonely. Not that she wouldn't have missed him anyway, but it made it much worse. At the end, I was all 'Wait, it can't be over, where's Alistair?' There were other reasons I didn't think it could be over, like the fact that it just stopped with no real ending, but that made it impossible that it could be done. Alistair wouldn't just not come back, not without sending word....

Just out of curiousity is that simply so you could see his thirty second cameo?

Yes. 

Well, I played through Awakening only once, but since then, I've made him king in case I might want to continue and I thought that my other PCs would like to meet him as well.
