No, you can't. Alistair will leave if unhardened no matter what and only stay if hardened to marry Anora. If Anora's not on the throne, Loghain's not going to live.

Yeah, that's what I thought.

Sometimes I hate Dragon Age. I really do.

*Wanders off mumbling something nasty about Morrigan and the damn stupidity of Riordan.*

Yay! Alistair! *Squee*

2000 pages of it and counting.

As an Alistair fangirl I figured this would be the absolute best place to ask this question.

Major Spoilers

To my follow fangirls and Alistair adorers, does anyone know if it is possible to romance Alistair, be his Queen, but not do the Dark Ritual and live? As in, have Loghain do it instead? I have never actually spared Loghain in all my playthroughs for the simple reason as it kicks Alistair out of my party. *Cries* Hence the question.

Nope.  Spare Loghain and the relationship is over, so the only way to be Princess Cous Cous is to give Morrigan her god baby.

Of all the things I've done in Dragon Age, from killing demon possessed children and slaughtering Dalish, convincing Alistair to agree to Morrigan's Dark Ritual is the most stomach churning and unbearable deicion . I just hate it. It feels like a punch in the gut to watch that scene. I hate getting screwed as a female Warden (unless it's by Alistair, of course). Wait, what?

And on that note. More Alistair!

It's definitely not easy, but it's to save his or my Warden's life so I guess for me it's still a no-brainer.  It really is a kick in the solar plexus that they use the same scene for him as they do for a male PC who was in a romance with Morrigan.  Aimo made a comic to address this.  Like a lot of the latter part of the game, things got mashed together and "streamlined".

That's an excellent comic. I know that personally, at the end of the day, I have my own version of the Dark Ritual scene that plays out in my head whenever I do it. I just keep telling myself he's doing for the woman he loves. Yup yup.

I mean, I suppose that if the scene itself was unqiue and protrayed Alistair's feelings moreso I wouldn't have such a problem with it, though I'd still find it... distastful. As it is now, I just want my Warden to barge into the room and shove her sword up Morrigan's behind. *Coughs* Ahem.

Now, where were we?

I dunno, I picture my Wardens as being extremely grateful to Morrigan for giving them the one chance to live and to keep Alistair.  In fact, after it works, they'd get down and kiss her feet, if she hadn't already buggered off for parts unknown.  Here's another interesting comic which was written by David Gaider and illustrated by aimo.  It was one of the scenes that got cut from the game- shows Morrigan agonizing over having to ask our Wardens to do this.

What does make me want to smack Morrigan is her comment that Alistair "will not hate this quite so much as he believes."  But Morri has poor people skills, and I figure this is her hamfisted way of trying to make him relax.  Which he's going to have to do if... you know.

Yeah, someone else might say something like 'Calm down, this won't be as bad as you think' which has the same basic meaning but might not ****** off the Warden if she's romantically involved with him.

Might also be a bit of smugness on her behalf too - her security in her "skill" as a woman.

My canon is equal parts grateful and angry and horrified and sad, she hates that she had to ask Alistair to do the Ritual while being glad it was an option but loathing the fact that she wasn't brave enough to just find a way to keep Alistair away from the archdemon and do the deed herself to spare him having to do something he hated.

I rescend my last statement. Now if that had actually been shown in game somehow, things would be about ten times different, I think.

Mind you, I don't dislike Morrigan. I quite like her as a character and my main Warden always becomes good friends with her. The Ritual just always irked me. That though; it makes a difference.

Thank you for the link.

And you can bet that if she had been and died so that he wouldn't have to have sex with someone that he didn't like then he'd end up hating himself for the rest of HIS life.

I definitely think that it's , especially since Alistair hates it on so many levels- I always feel he should hear the whole truth about it, which makes it even harder.  I've become a bit desensitized to it over scads of playthroughs, but it was one of the most wrenching things to do in my first pt, for sure.

Possibly.  They'd already ended their relationship for the crown, he hates himself for doing it anyways, and she is a teeny bit suicidal at this point, thinking it's better to just be completely out of his life and let him move on than being alive and always thinking of each other.

In any case, he never would have known about the Ritual had there been a way to avoid it.  Had she seen any toher way to do it, she would have turned Morrigan down (despite liking her) and just gone on as if there had never been another choice, which is what Alistair believed until Kara told him otherwise.

Heh my first playthrough it was Loghain who had to do the Ritual and I was still kind of :blink:whatjusthappenedwhere'sAlistair that I was "Um, okay, go ahead and do it".  lol and then stupid Riordan talked me into sparing Loghain with hardened Alistair married to Anora, so by the time I got to Kara's canon playthrough it was kind of "Do the Ritual, do the Ritual!!"

I don't see a Followers folder.  It says Core Soundsets, Demo, and Writer's Comp.  But I'm not even sure I'm IN the toolset.  Up top it says Demo Tutorial.

You're in the Demo not the main game. Go to File then Manage Modules select Single Player and then Open that will load the main game's files.

Do the VO notes appear in the little box with the grey scripting comments?

I already love the toolset.  I found a line from Alistair if you back down on convincing him to marry Anora:  "Good.  Because, that idea?  Bad.  All kinds of bad.  Maybe she said 'you've got a hairy chin'?  I do need a shave.  Yes, I'll go with that."

Maricstair!!

(edit:  nvm, I found the VO notes)

Ha, LOL... the VO note for when you tell Ali the whole truth about the DR is "sarcastic rant that gets louder and louder."

I have to say, even though the scene is bad, I love the brain fry.

Ohh, but then there's this line and the note says he is asking if his lover really is asking him to sleep with another woman.  :?

Skry.  :?

It's definitely addictive to read through and find little Alistair bits I haven't seen.  Said in the rose dialogue, if you say "off with the armor then" while the two of you are out of camp and he's the only one in the party:  "But what if a monster comes along while we're... How embarrassing.  Or maybe I'm just a big coward.  Who, umm, needs a tent.  For stuff."  :wub::wub:   Made me think of Mel's cow.

In addition to my warden asking Alistair to sleep with another woman  (who he thouroughly hates) Posted Image, it also bothered me that Morrigan knew the entire time what needed to be done to kill the archdemon and never said a word. It makes sense in my playthroughs where my warden and morrigan were not friends. But when they are I imagine that my warden feels betrayed that she waited to the eve of battle to bring it up.

Ugh, if you need a reason why Alistair should always be hardened, how he talks about Eamon when unhardened is it.

You know, I've never actually hardened Alistair... in that sense at least (I'm sorry, I couldn't resist).

Mostly because when I think of a hardened Alistair I think of renegade Kaidan from Mass Effect, which I despise. So, how much of a difference does it really make when it comes to Alistair? Curious, really. Does he lose his goofy charm or is it more a subtle thing?

Edit: Oh, and awesome poutastic screenshot, by the way. :P

Soooo... cmessaz, could you check the hardening flags on the latest version of CRS?  I am choosing "you're not an idiot but you need to stand up for yourself," and Alistair is still giving me the unhardened talk about the kingship.  He also gives me -1 which is unusual.

There are varying opinions on this but Alistair definitely does not lose his goofy charm.  He becomes firmer about taking on things like the kingship, and if made king he'll keep a romanced Warden as mistress if she wants that.  Otherwise he would break up with a non-queen PC.  He will agree to some things more readily, like a threesome with Isabella, whereas he'll resist other things he doesn't like, like the DR (though I have never had him tell me no).  Personally I see it as righting a wrong done to him in childhood, where he never learned to stand up for himself.

Edit for ToP:
