He could, actually.  Eye color genetics are tricky.  Eleanor is green and Bryce is blue, but we have no idea what their parents were.  If they carry one of genes for brown eyes, it can pop up in children and grandchildren.

Of course, it's entirely possible I am misremembering genetics from biology.  If I am, please ignore me.  ^_^

It's possible just not usual, whenever brown genes are found for hair or eyes they usually dominate.  Like my best mate his biological mum had blonde/blue and his father brown/brown and out of the three children two were brown/brown and one brown/blue.

Yup, but it can happen. My point is that it is not impossible, just less likely.

I thought Rowan had blue eyes? Her brothers are both blue-eyed.

And I know that two brown-eyed people can have a green-eyed child and a blue and a brown can have a blue. It doesn't seem too off that the green and the blue, in that situation, could have a brown-eyed child.

See, that's what I thought, too!  And that Fiona had brown eyes, so that while Maric's boys look like their father, they both have their mother's eyes.

And I totally stole that idea for my fic.  XD

I don't believe eye colors mix like paint. If that was the case far more people would have grey eyes iirc.

Bleh... I'd have to OCR every page to make this searchable.

I think she's talking about dominant/recessive genetics and not eye color actually blending.

Ah ha, finally a contribution I can make. Eye colors are actually "stored" on different genes and while you can, in some cases, predict a child's eye color based on the parents, it isn't usually as simple as Brn/Brn x Blu/Blu due to where the genes are, what the varients of the colors are, etc. Part of the reason why it is hard to explain grey and hazel eyes, and shades of brown, blue, etc. that are completely different from the parents'.

edited to say: real world genetics apparently have no bearing on Thedas genes though (ie look at elves + other species)

and just bceause I'm here, the obligatory Al in horns pic :)

Aren't certain eye colors, like blue and gray, also dependant on melanin?

*thinks* It has been so long since I studied this.

How pathetic am I? I just alt+f4 closed the scene with my parents, because I couldn't go through with making Duncan conscript me. And here I SWORE I was going to play dialogs differently this time. UGH! At this rate I'll never meet Ali.

Also...it's totally justifiable that he'd fall for me our first camp right? Because I'm pretty sure someone in Lothering mentioned it's been 3 weeks at that point since Ostagar.

Most excellent.  I am waiting for dinner to be ready.  Mmmm, linguica dogs.  *drools*  And then I think I should move my dalish elf along.  She's been neglected for several weeks now.

You really really really love your parents.  There is no way you would leave them to die,  you will fight to defend them.  Someone would have to drag you away, kicking and screaming!!

Does that help?  That's how I played it last time, and it was really heart breaking.  I got a lot more emotionally involved that way, compared the the "Yay!  i'm a Grey Warden!  See ya Pops!" way. ;)

Aha! See I was thinking that way, but more along the loving dutiful daughter "Yes daddy, whatever you say daddy" and looking at my Cousland...she does NOT look dutiful. Or that goody goody.

Nah, she's not dutiful. She's independent and has a wild streak. Doesn't mean she can't love mom and dad, and fight for them to the death!

In general, brown is dominant - i.e. you only need one copy of the allele to have brown eyes, while you need two copies to have green or blue.  So if we call B brown and b something else (blue or green), then a person could be Bb or BB and have brown eyes, but would need to be bb to have blue eyes.

So Bb and Bb people could have children who ended up bb, i.e. two brown-eyed parents could have a blue-eyed child.  But bb and bb can not give rise to Bb, because they don't have that allele.

Now, eye color involves multiple genes, but still brown/black ends up pretty dominant.

Oh I see how ya are! Ok, fine. Though I'm not sure I can stick with this armor and convince myself it fits the scene that is DA:O. I may revert to Shadow WArden. Then again, I'm a pampered Cousland, 2nd only to the royal family in my power (Loghain who?), with a Sister in Law from Antiva...where it is well known there is very fine leather...

As far as different shades of the color, it has to be able to change. My brother, sister and I, while we all have brown hair and eyes, have different shades of them. My sister had light brown eyes, my brother medium and mine look black unless I'm in bright light.

I do not understand genetic enough to explain this.

That comes from the fact that eye color is not determined by just one gene.  There are a number of modifiers that alter base colors.  ^-^

(I'm getting my MS in genetics, if you were curious, though really, no one's worked out the exact science of eye color, especially in humans.  Flies, maybe.  My organism doesn't even have eyes, so...)
