Good to know.  I agree with most fic having Couslands as canon.  I fully admit to being guilty of this.  It could be several reasons, but it seems like the most popular origin on the forums as well.  But I could be misjudging things.

I suppose I could make up for my contribution to the Cousland/Alistair fanfic world by doing by Tabris/Zevran one that's knocking about in my head, hm?

Non-Cousland fics need all the support we can give them. Posted Image Of course, a lot of the non-Cousland fics tend to be angsting about how they put Alistair on the throne so now they're a mistess or dumped anyway...maybe it's just that the Alistair fangirls write most of the fiction? I know 'Alistair is solo King because HNF didn't want to force a marriage on him so got dumped and years later (possibly after he has son named Duncan with more fertile but soon dead Queen) gets back with her since she's still single and he still loves her' is a sub-genre of its own.

I'm glad you weren't offended.  A lot of people on this thread seem to write it.  I have nothing against the concept of fanfiction, it's just that when I've read it, it's mostly been eye-bleedingly bad.  I used to do Tolkien MUSH, which is basically all fanfiction, but when I'd look on the internet to see what people were doing with the canon characters I was playing, I'd come across all sorts of horrors.

That's why you go find a rec page and then once you find authors you like you see what they like and you're more likely to find something decent.

Yeah, the Tabris/Zevran fic, if I do it, has like no Alistair angst in it.  Which is refreshing.  *is also guilty of Cousland/Alistair angst fic*  XD  And people doing canon characters badly upsets me.  :(

@Surely:  How do you know how many hours you've done on your pc version?  Just added them up?

I think he's impressed that you go that route rather than grovel or bring up your family.

Hence why you also get an approval bump from Morrigan and Zevran if you go that route, I expect.

Howe: It would appear that you have made something of yourself after all. Your father would be proud.(Grudging respect. "I see in you what made your father great. In another time I'd have been proud too.")

Go dad!

This reminds me of how seeing Bryce Cousland's shadow in the Gauntlet reduces me to tears every time.  Too much of a daddy's girl IRL.  *misty*

Go under the character screen and click on "Heroic Accomplishments." It'll be listed under there. (Sorry I'm not Surely.)

Hehe, I'm guilty of writing an Alistair/non HNF FF too but mostly because I found that the Dalish origin or her story in general left out so much potential and that frustrated me. Also I try to give it a more realistic take on her (PC) character and their relationship (which will advance in sloooow pace). I can't stand stories with a dalish, where she is totally cool and happy with all the humans around her and instantly BFF to all she is meeting. Of course there will be angsting too but the throne thing will be just a minor part of it. *shrug*

For me writing this FF is a possibility to set things "right" that BW has screwed up in my favorite (and canon) origin.

*high fives*  I'm slowly working through a Dalish fic too, for a lot of the same reasons!  Mine is trending towards dealing with a Dalish separated from her clan and adapting to a very non-Dalish land and how she deals with that, including an attraction to a very non-elven person...

<is suddenly interested in how to NOT be angsty> got ay examples? My queen came back from Ameranthine, got accused by Alistair of cheating on him with Nathaniel after having an anonymous note delivered via guard by a ticked off vengeful Velanna, and fled the castle for Ostagar. Guess who didn't harden the king...which hopefully I do not regret at the end of this game.

It only shows me the hours for that character.  *frowns*  Unless I am somehow missing another line where it says hours played?

There's a pretty creepy variant of the banter between Cousland and Howe on the DA wiki. It is for an "evil" Warden, I guess.

Warden: "After this, Howe, I'm going to slit the throats of your wife and daughter."

Howe: "Isn't that precious? Is this where I lament the monster I helped create? Let me show you how it's done: I made your mother kiss my feet before she died, it was the last thing your father saw. Meet my sword, and change that."

I just really love the "Let me show you how it's done" part. Now THAT'S villainous.

You can either go with Nonvita's suggestion or, if you're playing a Steam version check your profile (and then weep quietly and eat a Toblerone, which is what I did).

Oh, you're looking for hours across all characters? Huh, for that I think you would have to add them up...

Any examples of how not to be angsty?  Ummm, my long fic at the moment isn't especially angsty, I suppose.  In my Tabris/Zev story, Bree and Alistair are BFFs and he's pretty cool with being king.  Not a lot of breeding ground for angst there.

And I do not have the Steam version. Alas. And since I have deleted characters, I can't add them all up with any certainty. Ballparking it, I'd say I'm on the high-500 end.

But what would a fanfic be without angst? That's like an ice cream cone with no ice cream. :(

And badass.

But Howe could have been much more than just the stereotypical villain. But I guess the complex antagonist role was taken by Loghain (sadly many people just see him as evil).

I saw Howe as being more immoral than evil- he's so bitter and frustrated that he's willing to go to great lengths to get his 'justice', even if he didn't necessarily deserve it. I find him interesting because I think he views his actions as being justified- he 'deserved more', as he says right before he dies.

That being said, I wish there had been a slitting his throat cutscene.

Hrm.  Not sure how to help you really.  Just say if you don't want angst...don't put in angst.  XD  You're just telling  a story.  You have complete control.  Do what you want.

RE: PC/Alistair angst

I think Alistair breeds the most angst fic because a) women romance him and are more likely to write any kind of fanfic and B) the relationship can end so horrifically.

My HNF who is his mistress has a pretty sweet canon ending (in my head) she gives up being his Chancellor to Warden in Amaranthine for a few years and basically just does whatever she wants, stopping by Denerim for some hot King sex. There's always the possibility the relationship might end, but I'm not big on (and therefore neither is she) the whole "one true love" thing. She cares about him a great deal and knows that he loves her, but she's pretty certain that there will come a time when he'll no longer be able to be with her, or she might find someone else *cough*Anders*cough* and she's ok with that. Eventually, they'll take their Calling together and die fighting side by side (or holed up in a Dwarven inn, committing suicide via poisoned sex or something equally outlandish).

I'll save the angst for Cousland/Exiled Alistair, where it's pretty much compulsory.

Alistair as a Warden = nonharden
Alistair as anything else = harden

IMO anyhow...

Certainly you wouldn't want Howe competing with Loghain for awesomeness points, now would you? :P If Howe had been more complex, it would have been too many sympathetic villains. The only reason I would think otherwise is because there can never be too much Tim Curry.

IMO always harden. But if you didn't, it's not the end of the world.

I have to give credit to, I think, Skadi on that one. I'm not creative enough to think of something like that.

Howe wants to lust-kill gypsies?

I just now decided that "Hellfire" is totally Cullen's theme song for FAmell/FSurana.

Top of the page again?
