But Howe could have been much more than just the stereotypical villain. But I guess the complex antagonist role was taken by Loghain (sadly many people just see him as evil).

Certainly you wouldn't want Howe competing with Loghain for awesomeness points, now would you? :P If Howe had been more complex, it would have been too many sympathetic villains. The only reason I would think otherwise is because there can never be too much Tim Curry.

I think he gets too little screen time. A psychopath leading a double-life is nice. Though it's been done before.

A man who'd tuck his kids into bed and then go to the torture chambers for a little recreational torture. Not really a sympathetic villain, but awesome non the less. Howe passed the sympathetic villain role the minute he installed his bedroom next to the dungeon.

Hehe, I'm guilty of writing an Alistair/non HNF FF too but mostly because I found that the Dalish origin or her story in general left out so much potential and that frustrated me. Also I try to give it a more realistic take on her (PC) character and their relationship (which will advance in sloooow pace). I can't stand stories with a dalish, where she is totally cool and happy with all the humans around her and instantly BFF to all she is meeting. Of course there will be angsting too but the throne thing will be just a minor part of it. *shrug*

For me writing this FF is a possibility to set things "right" that BW has screwed up in my favorite (and canon) origin.

*high fives*  I'm slowly working through a Dalish fic too, for a lot of the same reasons!  Mine is trending towards dealing with a Dalish separated from her clan and adapting to a very non-Dalish land and how she deals with that, including an attraction to a very non-elven person...

*high five indeed*

Good to see the Dalish elves aren't forgotten. I know that this is probably the least favorite origin for all, but I found it for various reasons very appealling. Some of those have you already pointed well out. ^_^ I hate it that Bioware missed so many chances to make this origin more emotional for the player, so it's all due to your own RP-ing it. I love especially that Romeo & Juliet feeling I had with romancing Alistair with her. Kinda 'forbidden' love and against all odds, yummy stuff <3

My Dalish however is currently a grumpy, bitter person, who is hiding her emotions and guilt behind a mask...-- but at the same time she walks wide-eyed through Ferelden and marvels over those strange things to see there. Somehow like a child in a toyshop, though a very grumpy one :wizard:

Lenya: *pokes Bodahn in the face with her finger*
Alistair: What are you DOING?
Lenya: *excited* It's a DWARF! I've never seen a dwarf. :o
Alistair: Ooookay...

got ay examples? My queen came back from Ameranthine, got accused by Alistair of cheating on him with Nathaniel after having an anonymous note delivered via guard by a ticked off vengeful Velanna, and fled the castle for Ostagar. Guess who didn't harden the king...which hopefully I do not regret at the end of this game.

Alistair as a Warden = nonharden
Alistair as anything else = harden

IMO anyhow...

Usually, but if I harden him, and do the queen ending my story doesn't work as well. And I have this thing that the game HAS to play as things are in the story. A hardened Alistair would never believe an anonymous note, because he'd know people were out for themselves. An unhardened Alistair wouldn't know that yet.

If there had been more of this, then it would be good, although I don't know that it's making Howe more complex than he already is so much as just showing more of things that were hinted at in game.

Hahaha, nice.  I'm favoriting your story for a little thesis writing decompression, if I feel like I have the time. But I will read eventually, even if it has to wait until after the thesis!  Mine might be temporarily on hold for said reason...

So...someone sends him a letter saying 'your SO is cheating on you' and he believes it just like that? I think that's cause to dump him right there...

And on the subject of Howe, if as a HN Howe could try to set you up with Thomas or Delilah based on gender and you get the option of pointing out how much younger they are than you, that would make Nathaniel the oldest and therefore the heir. Why did Howe send his heir off to the Free Marches for years on end?

Meh, it's not exactly that simple..he over-reacted, and for various reasons she had a totally abnormal response. And she's the queen, and a cousland (duty first! though she's not acting much like it right now) she can't just ndump the guy, but man can she be mad, and hurt.

Meh, it's pretty much what he is. I want more of that, since I have a strange love for such villains. I have a hard time seeing his personality becoming much more complex.

Rendon is very Iago-like.  There are implications that both were once good soldiers and trusted friends, but something just wore them down and one day, out of jealousy, they flipped.  Something set them off.

As you pointed out, Rendon likely did feel genuine friendship for Bryce at one point.  Rendon was probably a good father and a good friend, because Bryce and Nathaniel had genuine affection for him.  But when he flipped, he flipped hard.

I think not knowing specifically what Howe's problem was (but knowing that he had one) makes him a little scarier.  It gives us an irrational doubt that there's a chance that someone's love for us has completely reversed, and we're just oblivious to it.

Some of us can see Loghain in ourselves and feel sympathy for his mistakes.  Howe is somebody we see in our loved ones.  It is a little paranoid horror show.

Thanks. Though I need to re-edit a few earlier chapter for error reduction, alas I'm too lazy to do atm ... and my beta seems to be dead. Again.

Sigh.

I once in my life want to have a reliable beta (since english isn't my mother tongue), but since this will last as an unfulfilled wish of mine, I put the chapter up "raw" *shrug* I'm surely not the best writer and I tend to never can keep things short, but I enjoy this whole plotting and developing character thingie too much not to write. :wizard:

Then we're agreed! :P

Also agreed with sleepingbelow as well. Although... Iago was slightly more developed, but yes, they're along the same lines. And good lines they are.

You can either go with Nonvita's suggestion or, if you're playing a Steam version check your profile (and then weep quietly and eat a Toblerone, which is what I did).

How about not looking at all and still eating a Toblerone?

Sooo... since several of us are playing mage PCs currently, I suppose it falls to me to point out that there really needs to be a female mage-specific dialogue line where you can suggest to Alistair, when he tells you that he keeps a templar uniform under his pillow, that you retire to his tent for a game of  "hunt the apostate."

Go ahead, post your screenshots of the look on Alistair's face.

I, of course, didn't ask this (still being manipulated by Irving at the mo). However, I do like to choose the "Why should we go anywhere?" response after the tenting. When he says "This isn't an everyday thing for me..." I really wish I could say "Well, I can make it an everyday thing for you..."

This is the expression for that:

Dunno. I, for myself play a HNF atm, but reading all the posts here makes me want to start a mage again.

Or at least push my EM Amira through the joy of the DR :wizard:

Ah. Right now I'm doing a Dalish mage run (yey mods). I've only ever gotten human characters out of Ostagar, so this has been fairly interesting. Though it is kind of funny how people in the Tower recognize my character. Aside from there I get all the Dalish responses (except when there are generic mage options).

Maybe the discussion about mages yesterday or the day before inspired people?

Edit: Lots of people seem to have problems gettg characters out of Ostagar. That's never really been a big problem for me. Getting them out of Lothering, on the other hand...

Hm. I had actually been playing another HNF but got bored with her. I wanted to try an origin I hadn't tried before but wanted to play a mage as well. I picked the other origin that seemed most logical for mages to come from. I wish Dalish mage were an actual canon origin, it would be really interesting to see how people would react to that.

Cute new (to me) line on the way to Redcliffe.  Hurrah for picking options you don't normally choose.

PC:  You're a prince.  Somehow I find that very... thrilling.
A (breathless):  Oh!  Did I just find the one damn decent thing about my birthright?  I think I did.

And, if you ask him if he's hiding anything else...

A:  (sly) Besides my unholy love of fine cheeses and a minor obsession with my hair?  No, that's it.  Just the prince thing.

What a sly one.

There's a point during this line where he rivals Ozymandias* for sheer, awesome smugface.

*For some reason, I can't find my Ozymandias Smugface pic but, if you haven't read Watchmen, trust me. It is epic.

Little pic, due to an alarming lack of horns this evening:
