But Howe could have been much more than just the stereotypical villain. But I guess the complex antagonist role was taken by Loghain (sadly many people just see him as evil).
Certainly you wouldn't want Howe competing with Loghain for awesomeness points, now would you?If Howe had been more complex, it would have been too many sympathetic villains. The only reason I would think otherwise is because there can never be too much Tim Curry.

Hehe, I'm guilty of writing an Alistair/non HNF FF too but mostly because I found that the Dalish origin or her story in general left out so much potential and that frustrated me. Also I try to give it a more realistic take on her (PC) character and their relationship (which will advance in sloooow pace). I can't stand stories with a dalish, where she is totally cool and happy with all the humans around her and instantly BFF to all she is meeting. Of course there will be angsting too but the throne thing will be just a minor part of it. *shrug*
For me writing this FF is a possibility to set things "right" that BW has screwed up in my favorite (and canon) origin.
*high fives* I'm slowly working through a Dalish fic too, for a lot of the same reasons! Mine is trending towards dealing with a Dalish separated from her clan and adapting to a very non-Dalish land and how she deals with that, including an attraction to a very non-elven person...

got ay examples? My queen came back from Ameranthine, got accused by Alistair of cheating on him with Nathaniel after having an anonymous note delivered via guard by a ticked off vengeful Velanna, and fled the castle for Ostagar. Guess who didn't harden the king...which hopefully I do not regret at the end of this game.
Alistair as a Warden = nonharden
Alistair as anything else = harden
IMO anyhow...

Lenya: *pokes Bodahn in the face with her finger*
Alistair: What are you DOING?
Lenya: *excited* It's a DWARF! I've never seen a dwarf.
Alistair: Ooookay...
So...someone sends him a letter saying 'your SO is cheating on you' and he believes it just like that? I think that's cause to dump him right there...Usually, but if I harden him, and do the queen ending my story doesn't work as well. And I have this thing that the game HAS to play as things are in the story. A hardened Alistair would never believe an anonymous note, because he'd know people were out for themselves. An unhardened Alistair wouldn't know that yet.

And on the subject of Howe, if as a HN Howe could try to set you up with Thomas or Delilah based on gender and you get the option of pointing out how much younger they are than you, that would make Nathaniel the oldest and therefore the heir. Why did Howe send his heir off to the Free Marches for years on end?

If there had been more of this, then it would be good, although I don't know that it's making Howe more complex than he already is so much as just showing more of things that were hinted at in game.

Hahaha, nice. I'm favoriting your story for a little thesis writing decompression, if I feel like I have the time. But I will read eventually, even if it has to wait until after the thesis! Mine might be temporarily on hold for said reason...

Meh, it's pretty much what he is. I want more of that, since I have a strange love for such villains. I have a hard time seeing his personality becoming much more complex.

You can either go with Nonvita's suggestion or, if you're playing a Steam version check your profile (and then weep quietly and eat a Toblerone, which is what I did).

Sooo... since several of us are playing mage PCs currently, I suppose it falls to me to point out that there really needs to be a female mage-specific dialogue line where you can suggest to Alistair, when he tells you that he keeps a templar uniform under his pillow, that you retire to his tent for a game of "hunt the apostate."
Go ahead, post your screenshots of the look on Alistair's face.

Edit: Lots of people seem to have problems gettg characters out of Ostagar. That's never really been a big problem for me. Getting them out of Lothering, on the other hand...
