I always give Cailan a pyre. Leaving him to the wolves and darkspawn just doesn't seem right on any character.

And I understand Loghain's contempt for Cailan, but meh, I don't get how he's cool with leaving Maric's son for the wolves. Even if Cailan was an idiot, he was still Maric's son. It's not like anyone except your party is going to see the pyre.

Gee now I know why Anora is such an evil b***h

Well I find it perfectly in character for his "Im right, you're wrong" mentality.  Trust me you won't be able to blast a different viewpoint into that skull.
He is always worm food in my playthroughs.  If I want to see something related to his character I just use UTube.

I've always taken him down and done the funeral pyre (but I've also always taken Alistair). What does Alistair say if you try to leave him up or leave him for the wolves?

I have the darkspawn one and I'll grab the wolves one.  Gimme a sec.

And I thought Alistair's reaction to the dog was on par with when you first get the dog (when he runs up to Alistair and Morrigan while traveling). He does grow to love the dog, but the first reaction is dubious.

??  No he's not.  He tells you that he's chosen you, that that's how mabari work and that it's called imprinting, and then defends him from Morrigan's snark ("he's not mangy!")

He does do that, but depending on your dialogue choices, he has different answers. For example, if you (non-human) are in Ostagar and the kennel master asks you to muzzle the dog, your PC can suggest that Alistair be the one to help the dog. He says, "Nope. Dogs and I don't get along. You do it, if you're so eager. Leave me out of it."

And one of the trees for finding dog again on road with Morrigan is:

Alistair: "I think he was out there looking for you. He's... chosen you. Mabari are like that. They call it imprinting."
Alistiar: "He's going to follow you around now. You should be honored. Mabari are very picky about who they choose."
PC: "If you like him, you can have him."
Alistair: "Me? I don't want a dog. I can barely take care of myself."

Maybe dubious was the wrong choice of word for me to pick. Apprehensive, maybe?

Yeah, I learned my lesson about keeping Loghain alive. Only ever did it once out of curiosity. It was a snap decision while playing through the Landsmeet, if it had been planned I would certainly make sure Alistair and my PC weren't in a relationship because it's just too sad (I had him executed, I went all out).

So after that ordeal, I speak to Loghain. His response to when you tell him that he cost you Alistair is what made me go "OH HELL NAW, IT'S ON." So I reloaded and killed him with great pleasure. He'll never see the light of day after a Landsmeet again >:}

Very interesting lines. I will never really like Loghain but he's a great character to have as an enemy. I enjoyed having him with me for a short time because I enjoyed showing him how much I don't like him.

It's weird.

You kind of see the true dislike he really does have for Cailan.

Hard to think he would treat Maric's son in such a manner.

I always give him a pyre. He was an idiot, but he was a King also regardless.

Loghain and Maric had plenty of issues.  He promises Maric to always put Fereldon first, but makes no such promise about Maric's offspring.  He is a very bitter and warped man with a paranoid obsession regarding Orlais.  His banters with the dog are pretty heart-wrenching, though.  In his own mind, he believed he was doing what was right for Fereldon.  He was horribly wrong, but he wasn't evil for the sake of kicks and giggles.  I guess I find him more dangerously pathetic than hateful.

Eamon I don't much like, but he genuinely is working in the best interest of Fereldon.  Much like Behlen, he isn't necessarily a good man per se, but he is a good leader.  He tells you and Allistair in your first conversation that if you cannot or will not convince the Landsmeet to back you that he will have to back Loghain against you to preserve Fereldon.  That says something about his priorites given that Loghain nearly killed him and may well have destroyed his family and arling.  He is the variety of leader who would kill one innocent to save a dozen others without much remorse, but wouldn't kill an innocent for fun.  I think that is how Loghain started, but the line between what was morally acceptable to preserve the masses and what wasn't  all but disappeared for him.

I've always wondered just how much Cailin of an "idiot" Cailin really was.  He had to know that being on the front line was dangerous, and the fact that he wanted the key to his private chest to go to the Wardens says he knew he might not make it through the battle.  It also suggests that he knew he could not entirely trust Loghain.  He also made certain that the only remaining Theirin was (presumably) safely out of the main battle with another Grey Warden to back him up.  That sounds more like an inexperienced leader who made an understandable tactical error than an incompetent glory hog.  He had to seem confident in front of his frightened troops.  They were having problems with desertion as it was.

And that was a rambling wall of text.  *sigh* Need more coffee.

Thanks for posting the Loghain stuff. I had heard that his dialogue during RtO was sympathetic and would make you like him more. NO IT ISN'T. I still hate the murdering traitor.

And I must stick up for Cailan a bit here - he's not quite as much of an idiot as Loghain makes him out to be. He's just been squashed by his advisors and a shrew of a wife. :)

I was going for the Redeemer ending too. After that there's no way in hell I'd let him redeem himself. Screw that :D

Yep I did it to satisfy my curiousity once and I don't remember if I forced Al to marry Anora or had her spare him.  I wanted to see what Loghain had to say in camp. Smug bastard just made me want to kill him again so I reloaded and went to town on his ugly butt.  Very smug, arrogant and unlikeable for me.

Anyone else find the more you grow to like an NPC the cuter/hotter they look?  When I first saw Alistair I thought he was kind of goofy and not my type then I spoke to him and got to know the NPC better and rrrrrooooowwwrr.  Same with Nathaniel.  All I could see was Howe at first but having him in my group (he was my lockpicker and got selected a lot) and as time went by he got better and better looking for me till I liked him better than Anders.  I love how the selection response changes as they get more approval with you.

sami jo: Idiot is far to strong a word for Cailen, I think. What you said about Loghain is part of the reason that I said earlier that I sort of saw him in a different light after I spared him for the first time. I don't know whos lines make me sicker in RTO, Loghains or Wynnes.

But I DO hate Anora. And like daughter like father, or something like that.

Very good post. Especially this part is exactly what I think about Loghain. And I always have a feeling if you have Loghain killed at the Landsmeet you've already made one little step down the road that Loghain went. Maric made some steps down that road, too.

hehe Mine is a stoic, disciplined warrior.  Very pragmatic and every inch a leader. Alistair didn't ALLOW her to lead she just took it.  She was born to it and if he didn't want it by the Maker she would do it.  In her interactions in Highever she was a bit of a disciplinarian.  The only thing before Alistair that got through her shell was her father.  She was every inch Bryce Cousland's pup and she worshipped her dad.

MMM actually...she and Loghain had a lot in common now that I think about it.  But she never went down that dark path he chose.  Might eventually end up that way though.
