Yeah, hardened Alistair definitely wants to be King towards the end. Regardless if he sees it as his birthright or not, he sees that he can do some good for Ferelden. Unhardened Alistair though I think would probably be perfectly happy being a Warden for the rest of his days.
I know ^^
Despite all that, when not playing a Cousland he is ending up riding into the sunset with my PC's in 80% of my games, and I 'harden' him every time. I see that he can do also some good for Ferelden too if he remains as a Warden and not become king. Instead of sitting on a throne and have to pester himself with politics and nobles, he continues freeing his homecountry from the threats of darkspawn and remnants of the blight. As a warrior that he is, together with his lady love and free.
Duty and the topic birthright has defined his whole life already, and I hate it how people are dragging him along to do this and that the whole game. I can imagine that he might pout a while about her decision when
hardened, but I'm sure he would start to see the good sides of his freedom soon. Especially when he has the chance to see a stressed Queen Anora at a banquette, surrounded by nobles nagging her.
